It was basically going that way with bw2 but then xy went full 3d and ruined it..

@@Goretantath no it didn't. XY has a lot of detail and charm, and that chibbi style really suits the franchise. The game has a lot of personality and it fits so well with the setting they went for. Later on ORAS we reached the peak of that graphic style on the 3DS, the games looked amazing and everything really felt great visually. Later they brought this up again with the Let's go, wich is another awesome example of how this style fits perfectly with the franchise, it looks fantastic, it gives everything a strong personality and it is not hardware demanding, wich is perfect for the Switch. If you ask me the one that really ruins the graphics is Sun and Moon, there they started a trend of giving Pokémon more realistic graphics, and it doesn't fit well. The characters (especially the main ones) started being bland, inexpressive and boring, the scenario felt generic, it didn't had an identity and it was also way more taxing on the hardware. From there on, it only got worse with gen 8 and 9. As much as I love these 2D graphics the change from 3D wasn't a bad idea, and it didn't ruin anything, the problem was to later try and make more realistic, instead of going for a more stylized approach.

I really like this visual style. The sprites themselves are charming, and especially with how everything is set up to more or less look like a pop-up book. Warm lighting and nostalgic music... really helps it, too. Simply excellent.

This artstyle would be a win-win. It both looks better and would make it a lot more doable to have hundreds of different Pokémon in the game. Game Freak actually became really good with simple sprite manipulation while changing to 3D requires both a different skill set and simply tons more work. This kind of artstyle could let that spriting skill truly shine.

I love this! I wish pokemon went this route instead of full 3d. Don't get me wrong they're good in their own way but no one can deny 2d pkmn was amazing and HD2D would totally make it even more so! I'm hoping bw/bw2 remake do this since it was the first of the pkmn games to try to mix both 2d and 3d kinda like a beta HD2D and it would definitely make it stand out from even the 3d pkmn games

This style looks really good except for one glaring flaw. The huge amount of bloom lighting. I've been seeing alot of these 2.5D remake projects recently and they all follow octopath's over saturated bloom lighting style. It blurs all the colors and deadens the tone. If you dial it back or create custom lighting, it would really pop more than it does.

This is fantastic. Like everyone else, I'd love a Pokémon game like this. Just a little feedback, if you don't mind. It looks a little washed out. The Chrono Trigger remake you posted doesn't seem to have the same issue, except maybe around some of the lights. I think it's a Post Process setting that's causing it. Other than, I really can't fault your work, very well done.
