For the butterfree/beedrill trade being translated: I think it’s more likely that the name was translated in the code out of context. Localizers often translate text directly in the code without knowing where it’s used since they’re a separate team, particularly in rpgs where playtesting would be time consuming.

No, 'Missingno' is short for 'Missing Number'. Missingno is not a Pokémon, but a placeholder to fill the slots of scrapped Pokémon and it has that glitchy look due to it being made up of other textures in the game, not having its own. There would just be Pokémon in its place.

@khsquare 02 Gen 1 and 2 use an 8-bit binary code for the index numbers, which can have a maximum of 256 possible values, which represents the absolute upper limit on the number of species the game's coding could handle. That doesn't however, mean there was ever an intention to fill this up - all it says is that they felt that 128 was too few, and that they didn't need more than 256. As it is, 190 slots were coded as legitimate pokémon, though only 151 would have data in the final version. The index number in the game's code is completely unrelated to the pokédex order in the final games - the index numbers were assigned as the pokémon were coded, and so by the index numbers 001 is Rhydon, whilst Bulbasaur is quite a way down the list (and some way after Ivysaur). Missingnos are dispersed throughout this list wherever a Pokémon was cut for whatever reason, with the earliest at 031 (though Mew, at 021, would have replaced another) and the last being 181-184. 191-256 are the actual glitches, generated when the game is forced to generate a nonexistent pokémon, because these values were never coded to be valid pokémon. As for the unused Pokémon, it's pretty simple - they came up with significantly more designs than they were going to use, which allowed them to be selective in which ones they developed further and implemented into the game.

@khsquare 02 1) Trying to dump all that stuff into Gen 1 results in a game that's too big to fit on the original Game Boy's game pack - at least some of the cuts were made for space, and Mew only got onto the game by using the space left over from debugging tools being removed (which is extremely risky as you have no way to test that your new code doesn't break the game). As a result, the game gets cancelled and forgotten outside a few Japanese game nerds who speak in hushed tones of the folly of dreaming too big, and the game that never was. Thus no anime to have real pokémon in. 2) The index numbers will always be 0-255, because the game stores the numbers as a 2-digit hexadecmal sequence, and in hexadecimal 256 is expressed as 100, which doesn't fit the space available. Even if we somehow crushed the extra data into the game, we just use index number 0. Remember the game code is not the Pokédex, so the pokédex can have a number 256 if they find the room for the data - it just won't have that index number (but any pokémon in gen 1 having the same pokedex and index number is coincidence anyway) 3) Mew's nature as a hidden secret was one of the factors that helped Pokémon take off - adding it to the normal roster kills a lot of the mystery and removes the kernal of truth that helped back all the other stories of secret pokémon, and whilst it might not prevent the games taking off it won't help.

It's technically unused, as you aren't supposed to be able to use it in the game; the fact that it has coding that allows you to use it if you break the game to get it, while odd, doesn't make it not-unused. And I think anyone who knows about this stuff knows that calling MissingNo a glitch is just short for saying it's a thing you can find/get by exploiting a glitch. Do you know how to get a MissingNo with those fossil sprites or the ghost sprite that were mentioned in this video? I know the appearance of MissingNO and [garbled]M'[garbled] is based on the letters of the name the player chooses for themselves…which letter combination lets you get one of those things, do you know?

True, because while in development, the gameboy storage couldn't handle all of the pokemon. They upgraded the storage, but never used all of the slots, thus, it is filled in with missing no.

Also, while MissingNo is a "not supposed to be there" rather than a glitch, it's not a thing that happens to keep the game from crashing. It IS a placeholder, but it's left over from a scrapped plan for the game; there are actually 39 "different" MissingNos, in the spots where the 39 Pokemon they didn't end up making were supposed to be, because there were originally going to be 190 Pokemon. It IS, however, possible to find true glitch Pokemon, Pokemon that are basically amalgamations of glitch data that have zero programming behind them; due to the way the game is built around numbers so solidly, identical glitch Pokemon can reliably be found under the same set of circumstances, but they aren't like MissingNo, they truly aren't supposed to exist. Use the Ditto glitch with a Pokemon with a special stat between 191 and 256 to summon them, and other things… :)

*DID YOU KNOW THAT?* Missing no is the result of the game trying to gather data that, because of the way the game is programmed in certain areas, doesn't exist beyond the games code. Missing no, despite what people believe, has a small bit of coding in it, unlike many other glitches, such as 'M. It is usually a bird and water / phycic type, suggesting that it could have been a pokemon like wingull. You must note that it's a BIRD type, a scrapped pokemon type. This was later replaced with the flying type. But, because the bird type appears nowhere in the anime, this can mean it was scrapped late into development.

The reason for the PC in the Celadon hotel is that they literally took a Pokémon Centre and copied its interior into the Celadon hotel, and then removed the Nurse Joy, and the healing device, made some layout changes and the changed the NPCs, and removed the PC's sprite, but didn't remove the PC properly so that you couldn't use it. Also, the Safari Zone Guesthouse probably have PCs for the same, or similar reasons.

I have some insight on the out-of-bounds game crashing bug: apparently, each map in the game can define a "filler tile" to be rendered outside the map boundary. The grass on either side of Palette Town is an example: the map physically ends where the wall tiles are, and the grass outside is the filler tile. When you try to walk out there, you walk outside the map data and the game crashes. You can see this if you find a level editor for the game. The maps are pretty small. In some places in the game, two adjacent maps have disagreements on what their filler tile is. For example the route south of Cerulean City vs. Cerulean City itself. If you walk up and down around this area, you can see the filler tiles switch after they scroll off the screen and come back (iirc they switch between a rock tile and a tree tile or something). So when you approach Cerulean City from the south the filler tile will be one of them, then when you turn around and walk south the tiles magically changed into a different one.

Funny thing is, the full battle is actually still in the game code. Everything is fully functional, it's just the event trigger that has been removed, so we can't technically access it. But if you use a Trainer-Fly glitch, you can access it. Essentially a party of 5 mons level 65+ (as far as I remember, there is a Gyarados, an Exeggcutor, and the remaining starter). I haven't triggered it in a long time so I can't remember exactly the full party, but it's for sure 65+. Which is a pretty high party for gen I. And that fight was also intended in Gen II, was removed last minute just like in Gen I.

If you actually trade Missingno. to Gen II, depending on which form it is and which index it represents, it can actually become a gen II Pokémon. I've seen a guy farming Missingno.'s using 3 emulators at the same time, to have a specific arrangement of stats to get a shiny Larvitar after the gen II trade through the time capsule. So in theory, depending on the arrangement of stats of your Missingno., it will become a different mon if you trade it to gen II, even starting from the same form of Missingno. (since it always have a Pokédex index of #000, but it might have a different Pokémon code index)

The fan was actually right about the restored track, but the source code version still sounded damaged, some of the notes were off sync. The track turned out to be a trading track that was intended to be played on 2 game boys, hinting at why there’s only 2 channels.

Nah, its just that those programmers suck... Gen 1 is a hell of a mess. They wrote the code so poorly, they had to get help from outside to understand what their code is even doing... Also its easier to miss buggs and glitches in assembly language, which the game is written in. I think its easy to gloss over some things like the 1/256 missing chance of 100% accuracy moves by accident... But some things are just pure sloppiness of the devs not thinking through what they were actually doing. Like I said: in the end they couldnt even read their own code.

I’ll give you a rumor that worked for me a long time ago. Catch a missingno, it has to be at a glitched level like 122 And duplicate the rare candies. Feeding missing number the candies but don’t let it evolve. At around 536 the level resets to zero. Then give him a few more rare candies, and take it to fight, It should have 3 health Bars. I did this one red version on game boy in the 90s My missing number was level 5 in reality it was more like 540, it was weak as hell, but it wouldn’t die. I remember sitting there watching for like 3 minutes watching each health bar deplete then refresh only to deplete. However it took a while to level missingno up that high and once he’s out in a box or the game is saved and turned off It resets to its normal health bar and the glitch goes away.
