As for the Kanto section. I always imagined the gym leaders had a "challenger" team as well. Like new or inexperienced trainers deal with their B team and after so many badges, they start using their heavy hitters from A squad. Then they got their "I'm filling in for this elite 4 member today team."

I like this idea a lot! It would be cool to see a Pokemon game that let players choose their starting town and run through the gyms in different orders with this in mind.

I remember when I got Silver for Christmas, we had just moved to Japan that month, was living out of a hotel still and staying up past midnight and having reached the elite 4 that day

I used to play with 2 of my favorite pokemon to beat the game with. Everyone else was an HM or TM dump.
