I really enjoy these types of games! Does anyone happen to know more games that use similar combat mechanics? (Megaman Battle Network, One Step from Eden, KH: Chain of Memories, Card-en-Ciel”

This is my favorite non-Super Robot Wars and non-Gundam tactical mecha game. This occupied my brain for probably way too much time. I even planned to make a sequel prequel for this game. I hounded everything about this game. I sought out the soundtrack and the guide. I also wanted to know the original, Epica Stella, when I found out about it. Funnily enough, I think it made a bigger splash outside of japan rather than in it. I did find a japanese site which was dedicated to the game though. All I'll say is Bastion is definitely a better name for our lead character than Ricky is (that's reserved for heropon). As for music, the main themes are great, the battle themes are the best and Hole is properly a final boss theme if anything.

I played the everloving sh*t out of this game back in the day! I even have the cheeky strategy guide for it still. It looks like a hotel bible at first glance and is full of the low brow humor seen in the game. I was able to download it on my PS Vita today and I think I might give it another play through for the first time in 25 years. Can't believe the game is that old. I was an optimistic 19 year old in 2000, I'm sure I'll see this game differently now as a 44 year old man beaten down by life and decidedly much less optimistic than the 19 year old that first played this game lol.

I hope your playthrough goes well and that it can help rekindle some of your optimism. I'm about 10 years younger than you and do my best to try and retain a youthful spirit but it can be hard with how easy cynicism is.

What's the secret then for slowing down and not being so impatient? I always found this game really appealing for its cinematic approach and unique look, but was never fully able to 'get into it', but I keep meaning to give it another shot. The steady pace was never really the main turn off for me though, it was more just not giving it the time to wrap my head around the spirit meter system. I don't remember when I discovered Godzilla as a kid, as far back as I can remember I just kind of knew who he was. I remember as a very very young kid thinking that Godzilla lived behind any particularly large hill I would see, and I would imagine him popping out from behind them.
@FiresideGamingReviews8 күн бұрын
There were a couple of things that allowed me to slow down and be more patient. First, I went through a period of about seven years (2012-2019) where I didn't have access to internet able to handle multiplayer games. This forced me to focus on single player games and rekindled my love for them. Once I moved back to a place with good internet again, it quickly became apparent that I'm easily addicted to online games and will let them consume my life. The constant dopamine hit is too much and I'm convinced breaking away from it was what allowed me to enjoy single player games again. The second thing was prayer. I promise this isn't me getting preachy or anything like that and I rarely bring up my religion on this channel as it's focused on gaming, but it's relevant to this. I've been a Christian since I was baptized as a teen but always lacked in prayer. At the same time I moved away from internet, I returned to church and developed prayer habits. Praying forced me to stop and think about my life more, helping me to slow down and better appreciate things. God really did ease my mind. I don't know if those were the answers you were looking for but it's what I experienced and I hope it helps you in some way.

@@FiresideGamingReviews I appreciate the honesty, I'm glad that works for you. When you mentioned all the stuff you had going on at the time, the work, class, etc. I was thinking about my schedule and how it's a fraction of all the stuff you had going on and I have a hard time sitting down to focus on anything. I'm either working, wife and kid stuff, watching youtube or sleeping basically, and when I sit down to a video game I have zero patience anymore. Even with games I LOVE. It's hard for me to sit down and play through some long jrpg or something anymore. It's not even just the time, but I'm just so high strung all the time.
@FiresideGamingReviews6 күн бұрын
My schedule was busy sure, but there's no discounting how much time and energy goes into a family. The only other thing I can think to recommend is making a game backlog and trying to mark games off of it. It's something I've done in the past to motivate me to play games. The only problem is it can make it feel like work if you aren't careful. I used an Excel sheet for mine, btw.

And Axl locking into place when shooting, even on the ground, is one of my criticisms towards the game. If Nintendo could get Samus to fire her arm cannon while moving in Super Metroid, then Capcom could do the same for Axl in X8. They just chose not to and decided if it worked for Bass, it'll work just fine for Axl, but it didn't, and this is because the game loves its autoscrollers as much as I love Dr. Pepper and its cheap enemy placements as much as X6.
@BaxterAndLunala10 күн бұрын
Imma be real, I never felt any satisfaction out of fighting the Mavericks in X8 aside from Gravity Antonion. He's the only one that felt genuinely challenging, I am not happy with how they handled the rest. Edit: Also, hard disagree with the voice acting, especially with Zero. I always saw Zero as one who would never let his emotions dictate his actions, as the most serious of all three Maverick Hunters, but in X8 there are two times where he lets his emotions seep through, both are in moments where the events of X5 are mentioned. I don't hate how they handled the voice acting of X, Axl, and the navigators, but with Zero, Sigma, the Mavericks themselves, Vile, and Lumine, they could've done so much better.

Dang, feels like we played two different games. But to each their own. Like how I'm a hard X5 defender even though it doesn't have the best reputation.

Since i see that you also like and post transformers armada videos and i LOVE that game, so i was wondering if you would be wiling to do a mod showcase video, i am most interested in reskins/recolourings of the characters, maybe you could play as some of the already existing skins such as nemesis prime, or maybe you could also recoulour another chraracter by yourself such as hotshot, (maybe make him red coloured like he was in the anime later on in the series, that is what i would like to se tbh...), would you be wiling to do that 🙏?

Overly long RPGs will continue to be made as long as consoomers demand "bang for buck" type games over quality. "This game is 60 dollars on day one, therefore it needs hundreds of hours of content for me to CONSOOM!" etc
@FiresideGamingReviews26 күн бұрын
I generally like to get at least $1 per hour of entertainment, but that's not a hard rule and I take into account potential replays. So if a good RPG is 30 to 60 hours long that's plenty for me.

@FiresideGamingReviewsАй бұрын
That's unfortunate and it's not for everyone for sure. If you aren't against emulation, there's a mod that adds true dual analog controls to the game. Makes it more easily digestible to some players.
@thesacredloboАй бұрын
@@FiresideGamingReviews - Nah. I'd rather not mess around with a PS2 emulator when I have a functional PS2 and over 500 games in my library to check out. Sad part is I was planning on doing a Let's Play for it. Oh well, I can always play other games involving giant robots like Transformers, Eureka Seven, MS Saga: A New Dawn, and so on.
@FiresideGamingReviewsАй бұрын
I get ya. I mostly stick to real hardware as well. Transformers is lots of fun. Never played Eureka but loved the anime. Picked up MS Saga a couple years ago and haven't played it yet. Either way, hope you find something fun for your Let's Plays.
@thesacredloboАй бұрын
@@FiresideGamingReviews - I'd say the Eureka Seven games are rather mediocre since they include three/four modes of play. The first one is giant robot combat which tends to boil down circle strafe and unleash your most powerful weapon on your enemy. The second mode is a racing system centered around the player riding a ref board. The third is a hand and gun combat system for your pilot which comes up in a few story missions and finally you have air combat which differs enough from ground combat to be it's own category in my opinion. And the sequel introduces a few missions where the game turns into a rail shooter as well. MS Saga: A New Dawn is a turn-based RPG. So it's definitely stands out from most of the other games in the Mobile Suit games. And I've completed Let's Plays for all three of them in the past. Though I recently decided to revisit Eureka Seven which probably includes a cut scene that should be more infamous where your character is threatened with death if he fails to answer correctly on how a true man wipes his bum.

Any truth to the lag issues I have heard a lot of people complaining with this steam version!?
@FiresideGamingReviewsАй бұрын
Response time on the Steam versions are largely comparable to the Anthology collection. That's where I started playing Metal Slug games, so it feels normal to me. If you played them in arcades back in the day you might notice some slight difference. It does have slowdown when lots of enemies are onscreen, but that's normal as it mimics the original release (like Mega Man X in Armored Armadillo's stage.) As someone who can't stand playing the SNES MMX games in Capcom's Legacy Collection because of the poor response times, I've had no issue playing the Steam Metal Slug releases.
