Great video. One thing to add: IMO gem rate is highly affected by hype and card value. Example: the gem rate is way high on Jesse James because with a $40-$60 card, you’re only going to send it in if you’re 99% sure it will 10. With an expensive and hyped card like bubble mew, people are more likely to gamble on sending it in, even if it’s a 30-50% chance it gets a 10. Hence way more 9s and 8s on hyped cards. Sure some cards are “harder” to grade but people’s willingness to play the risk/reward game for that 10 plays a big role as well and hype and value often steer that.

Hey Alex, love the videos. One thing that I think is worth adding here is that the low 10 rate cards actually have an even worse 10 rate then is visable on the pop report. The ones on the pop report are only the copies that people actually thought were worth grading. There are a lot of copies that are pulled and people dont even try to grade, because they have zero chance at a 10. The Magikarp as an example, I would guess the actual 10 rate to be closer to 10-15% for a fresh pull to grade a 10.

This was good to see. I would just caveat by saying that if you catch a surge quick enough on a card that is likely going to do a 2-300% gain (and the card is selling for over maybe $200 bucks), it would might be worth paying psa for the 10 or 20 day turnaround. The Greninja ex Promo and the Kingdra ex Promo from the shrouded fable box sets are a great example of that right now - But I haven't checked the pop report on those myself, so idk. I was snagging those boxes for $29.99-gme pro discount when they were just sitting there. (and you can kinda pre-grade the boxes you want - making it even easier to eliminate corners and centering from the grading factor). Lots of boxes of both on ebay rn and they have pictures for the most part.

Thanks again for the knowledge! I'd been taking in your advice to somewhat ignore the total population report number, but had never thought about how that ratio between submitted and 10s is a good way to value the gap between the raw and the 10.
@afigleafКүн бұрын
Great vid! The only caveat I can think of is Gamestop's impact on the graded market. Before Gamestop, you had to get a membership and either send in cards yourself and pay a premium to grade a single card or submit multiple cards in a bulk order. Mostly die-hard collectors and shops graded cards since it wasn't very accessible and affordable. Now that you can just drop off your card at Gamestop, anyone can get their cards graded for a pretty reasonable price. I would argue that the majority of people who go to Gamestop don't even know what PSA's grading standards are and drop off any rare card that they own. Thus, the percentage of 10s is much lower since people aren't taking the time to see if their cards actually qualify for a 10. Therefore, older cards might see a much higher percentage of their cards in a 10 vs. more modern cards.

I kinda see it like the grading play is priced into the psa 10. If a card is $100 raw, has around a 33% gem rate, then on average you'd have to send in 3 to get one psa 10. A psa 10 like that may go for $300 then. It doesn't always work but it's a good rule of thumb

I think we should take in consideration the price per pack in the equation ! All the cards compare to Jessie and James was Scarlet & Violet set. For my part, this card was under value. I pay 70$ in Psa 10 15 months ago. Love this card. Don’t want to sell it 😊

A fun exercise to think about is in the sports card market, how do we value 1/1's or extremely low pop PSA10's and low numbered. The general concepts still apply in Pokémon with respect to all the differences between the Sports and Pokémon hobby.
@scottabbot896Күн бұрын
Not that this takes away from the points made in the video, but I think the base price should include the grading fee. For expensive cards the grading fee is negligible to the percent increase, but for cheaper cards the grading fee can drastically change the percent increase (for instance a $4 card that’s worth $40 in a psa 10)
@Fishmo-rs7hmКүн бұрын
is there another factor for gem rate being that less expensive cards (J+J, Umbreon star) are less likely to be sent in unless they are 10 candidates since the return isn't worth it? Whereas Karp, Zard, and Bubble Mew may still be sent in even if not a 10 candidate. This would bump up the gem rate on less expensive cards and decrease them for more expensive ones.
@silentninja6997Күн бұрын
What you are saying makes a lot of sense. However, I think looking at the total gem mint 10 count along with how old/available the set is would also be very important when deciding if a particular psa10 card is worth the pickup.

I think the thing with the Jessie/James card is that the card is not being pulled daily like Bubble Mews and Charizards still are. So maybe there's a perceived scarcity that is causing people to FOMO into buying it.

all good and of course that is the right way to check for over under value etc, BUT don't you think that the popularity of the pokemon plays crucial role? Also, the tarountula svi 199 has only 6 gem mint 10s. STill the raw card is about 5 euro here, psa 10 sold for the amount of 350 USD.

Also worth mentioning what caused a shift in consumer value, i.e. Team rocket set. JJ #68 is no different than a pump-and-dump crypto. Foresight, hype, opportunity = over value; if you got in early great if you didn't, dont buy-in and pass. Look for the next opportunity. But i agree 100% with the statistical analysis of gem mint percentage difference 🔥 🔥

Isnt the fact that the jesse and james and celebration umbreon since they are older cards are harder to find in a good enough condition for it be worth sending... hidden fates isnt openend so much anymore same with celebration. Compared to paldean fates and 151? If its harder to pull it yourself and buy it mint enough to send it yourself to grade isnt that making it be worth more to go directly buying it in a psa10? Im not saying jesse james isnt over valued but im just saying it harder to find a raw copy thats grade worthy to be sent hence going buying it graded directly and raising the demand for graded compared to raw?
@kaijutrapsКүн бұрын

The only issue I have when I look at these numbers is how many people are deluded when they send their Charizards, mews, or Magikarp vs the maybe "less popular" Umbreon gold star or Jesse James card? I imagine way more people want to believe that the Charizard SIR they pulled/purchased is a 10 simply because they are viewing it with rose tinted glasses. It's obviously impossible to know, just something I think about. Saying your Jesse James isn't a 10 before sending is a much easier pill to swallow than saying your Charizard SIR isn't so I wonder if just less "fringe 10s" get sent for cards like that.

@NostalgiaNomics So my question is how come shops sell cards at graded prices or what they think it would grade for? This wasn't really a thing until prices really started to raise on cards. I don't think this is a fair practice due to the shop not being able to guarantee the value if it were to be graded after purchase. And if that's the case and it is supported then what's the point of a raw price valuation? Cards should then only have value when they are graded.
