Solid take. I didn't think about it that way, but makes sense! Even though I didn't collect cards, I played so much of the games as a kid (still do😅) and just from that nostalgia, I jumped on board the card scene during celebrations. Maybe there will be kids like me that'll start collecting as an adult, just because they enjoyed the show or the game or some other aspect of pokemon? (pokemon go, unite, tcg pocket, etc.)

I really can’t imagine a market crash right now at this crazy time. I feel like the market has totally changed. People are just buying whatever. Prices are going up on anything just “nice”. The market now is like if India suddenly started collecting Pokemon cards but the Pokemon company decides to copy the Prime hydration and Travis Scott Nike collab sneakers business model.

@@tobiramatv6918 who cares how old they are? they are making a good point. Maybe more kids would be into it if it was a fun affordable thing. I remember when I was a kid I wouldn't get tons of packs all the time it was more 1 or 2 every now and then if we were out at the mall or grocery store. I went hunting for Prismatic and found 1 ETB at MSRP. It was temping just to sell it from $60 ----> $150. I opened it but anyone not into pokemon will buy it and sell it for at least $100 now. Even then in my area most shit is overpriced to the moon. Most of the adults that are collecting started as kids & it stuck as a hobby/interest as they aged, it originated as a trading card game catered to kids, it sounds like you're more butthurt about it lmao. Just because some kids don't collect doesn't mean other kids don't collect. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don’t think the market will crash anytime soon. Maybe plateau or have a small correction. With prismatic , then rocket for the cards and then you have to think about the switch 2 release which will likely have a Pokémon game release 3rd or 4th quarter , then the next era being around the corner and then 30th anniversary. It’s just a lot of content at about the perfect time frames. They will sure print a bunch to take advantage but I don’t see a total crash in the next 18 months.

Great video! I’m really interested to see how and when the market corrects. As of right now it doesn’t look like it’s gonna happen until the end of this year or beginning of next depending on how hype the sets that we havnt seen. Everyone talks about I think fusion strike? just wasn’t that sought after? That’s what it’s gonna take for everything to settle down. Either way we will see!

@nickswan212 7 күн бұрын
You are EXACTLY right on the nostalgia and personal connection these cards need to have with young players and collectors for this hobby to truly grow. While Pokemon is bigger than Yugioh ever was I still think those core fundamental memories as you put it will play an enormous role in this hobby's future. If Surging Sparks, Prismatic, and soon to be Journey Together aren't on store shelves kids aren't going to care about them at all.
@nickswan212
@nickswan212 7 күн бұрын
@@cryptoclyps5049 He brings it up in this video. Yugioh has a mostly older player and collector base because the younger generations lost interest more and more year after year. This could be the case with Pokemon if there is no product available for them to grab off a store shelf because lets be honest a kid isn't going on a website to grab Pokemon cards. They are going with their parents to Target or Walmart shopping and ask for that pack available on the shelves. If there is nothing available then the interest year after year for the youth could slowly die down and eventually lead to a more stagnant hobby. In terms of investments that isn't great long term if your buyers simply have no interest in a product that historically has its teeth sunk deeply into nostalgia. Can't have nostalgia for something you never really had.

Count me in as an adult who just got into Pokemon. I came over from sports and frankly even with the recent boom collecting Pokemon is sooo much cheaper than high end sports cards and opening packs is surprisingly more gratifying. Sports has become pure speculation on the top rookie or two each season which rarely pans out until they win MVPS and rings. Take a long time to reward you and really does. Whereas Pokemon have immediate value and will hold it more or less based on the character, art, rarity etc. Annnd Pokemon don’t get injured or do stupid off court stuff and ruin their careers. Pokemon feels like a safer long term investment and short term fun! Can’t believe I’m admitting that as a looong time sports card collector.
@JAW114
@JAW114 7 күн бұрын
Oh the other thing is in sports it’s mostly about rookie and the prime of a guys career then once they retire their cards are pretty much worthless besides a few autos here and there. But in pokemon a strong character can be relevant and sought after generation after generation.

To answer your first question, “Why would anyone want to be collecting Pokémon cards right now with current prices”, is because, in my opinion, of two main reasons. One, they got into collecting late (I would say within the last few months) and want to catch up with the more veteran collectors despite the high costs. I started collected a few months ago, at the end of October, as I also feel behind. I’m grateful for my collection and am fortunate to open/buy the cards I have, but I’m missing so many cards still. Second, with so many people collecting and not enough product, FOMO is definitely happening which forces people to spend more than they should be. I really hope prices go down and the bubble bursts because it will help the newer collectors. I’m torn because I want to get so many cards right now, but the prices are just so crazy at the moment.

I remember the thrill and hype of opening a new set as a kid since I was only able to buy 1 or 2 packs every now and then. Nowadays kids aren't even able to get 1 pack as parents aren't likely to pay scalper prices especially ones that aren't keen on "wasting" money. Even now I'm still not able to buy many packs because the sets I do wanna buy are always out of stock for retail prices. Its sad to see that the hobby has shifted from focussing on the beautiful artworks to simply being a cheap and easy means to a quick buck.

You should also link your video on the relationship between the Pokemon company and the secondary market. I think it was "the dark side of pokemon". Not only do we want more shiny cardboard to increase availability and bring down prices, but the Pokemon company probably also wants prices to come down and they're going to try their hardest to stabilize supply and demand. They've set prices and printing at levels they think straddles the line between allowing fans to buy the product and supporting a secondary market where prices can gradually increase long term. I bet they're just as concerned over the current situation as we fans are.

All good points! Stepping back to get a clearer picture can be hard, especially when something new is happening every 2-3 months (for the most part). But if you’re able to buy/open/keep what you’re interested in on a strategic level, you can still get the satisfaction of being involved with what’s going on in the community, while not burning a hole through your pocket or being left holding the bag. But hey, some people like holding the bag, if it’s something they truly love. 🤷❤

I missed Pokemon as a child because they came out right as I was starting high-school and I was "too cool" for them. A friend got me some packs for Christmas, so I guess this is my midlife crises :)

I loved collecting cards as a kid, my dad used to purchase nice ones on eBay and now that I’m an adult, I want to share this with my kids

This reminds me of the Van Gogh Pikachu. Even though the Moonbreon card didn’t have time to grow in this new set the fact that it has a story of people fighting in stores over it already gives it that unique value. Plus, the pull rates are incredibly tough, which adds to its appeal

I was introduced to PTCG about 4 months ago through KZbin shorts showing Paldean Fates pack openings, especially the Gardevoir sir. I was immediately drawn to the art and thought, “What a lovely piece of ‘cardboard’!” I wanted to add it to my PC, but at that time, the price was RM170 (40 USD). Now, looking back... I regret not getting it.

Millennials are in so much debt that they are taking massive risks right now investing credit in speculative plays like Pokemon to try to dig themselves out of their situation or to just to attempt to afford rent or down payment for a house
