Here's Gen-7's, if you people are so impatient: - Rowlet and Dartrix draw heavily from barn owls, which can easily be seen by their tan coats and white faces. Decidueye isn't as barn owl-y as its previous forms, but its body shape greatly resembles the stilt owl, an extinct specie from Hawaii that got its name from its long legs. - The first two stages use leaves in a similar fashion to throwing knives. Decidueye ups this concept as an archer. Its wing shape and neck vines can even serve as a makeshift bow. The haughty attitude that Dartrix and Decidueye carry may be a nod to the "archer archetype" - an aloof loner with little care for anyone else. Dartrix especially shares the "prettyboy" look of some fictional archers with this behavior. - There are many plausible origins for Decidueye's Ghost-typing. One, owls are usually seen as omens of death (barn owls, especially). Two, stilt owls (which Decidueye resembles) are extinct. Three, owls have a notorious trait of flying silently, like a ghost. - Decidueye's signature move, Spirit Shackle, comes from a fictional ninja technique known as shadow-stitching (which happens to be the move's Japanese name) - that is, using a kunai or an arrow to "pin" someone's shadow in place so they can't move. - Rowlet = rowan (a kind of tree from temperate regions) + owlet. Dartrix = darts + strix (the genus of "hornless" owls). Decidueye = deciduous (trees that shed their leaves annually) + eye (or deadeye). - Litten, Torracat, and Incineroar are obviously based on cats. Litten and Torracat specifically have a resemblance to the striped tabby cats, while Incineroar is based on a tiger. Also, Torracat's flame sac looks similar to the bell on a cat's collar, given its location. This transfers to Incineroar's navel or waist in the form of a fiery belt, which obviously looks like a wrestling championship belt. - The end-all theme is heel wrestlers - the "bad guys" of the ring, so to speak. They disregard a lot of rules in fights and often use illegal moves. This is generally used to set up plotlines in wrestling, with a "face" (heroic wrestler) having to overcome these "villains". This is why Incineroar has the Dark-type, which in essence represents acts of ill behavior. Litten and Torracat actually have character traits that lead up to the devious fighter Incineroar - Litten acts cold and calculating, and Torracat often behaves like a spoiled child. - Incineroar's signature move, Darkest Lariat, obviously comes from the lariat move in wrestling, in which the whole arm swings at the opponent. Of course, Darkest Lariat mimics the ridiculously-upgraded form of the Double Lariat attack used by Mike Haggar (Final Fight) and Zangief (Street Fighter). - Litten = lit (on fire) + kitten. Torracat = torrid (very hot and dry) + cat. Incineroar = incinerate + roar. - Popplio, Brionne, and Primarina are sea lions. Primarina also incorporates elements of beautiful mythological sea entities, like mermaids, Sirens, and selkies (seal-based shapeshifters). Primarina is adorned with what look like pink starfish, and its mane is held by "chains" of bubbles. - They're all stage performers. Popplio and Brionne are surprisingly cute adaptations of circus clowns, using balloons of water like big bouncing balls for acrobatic performances. Brionne and Primarina largely veer toward singers, though - Brionne is based on teen pop stars, while Primarina behaves more like an opera singer. - Primarina's signature move, Sparkling Aria, takes full advantage of its informed ability to generate and manipulate water balloons with its voice. It's actually possible to levitate balls of water by using sound frequencies. - Primarina is Fairy-type, likely due to the mermaid and Siren inspirations, which use their beautiful voices to lure sailors to their deaths - deceit through charm and beauty tends to be one of the elements of the Fairy-type. - Popplio = pop (like a balloon) + leo (for lion, as in sea lion). Brionne = brio (vivacity of style and performance) + sea lion OR brine. Primarina = prima donna (lead female singer in an opera) + marina (Italian/Spanish for marine).

I like how the Unova and Kalos starters are opposites, most obviously with the Water ones. Where Samurai were very honourable and true, Ninjas were secretive and sneaky, which is why Greninja is a part-Dark type and why Samurott never gains a secondary typing. Emboar is Fire/Fighting where Delphox is Fire/Psychic, so one is basically a berserker and one is a mage- as far opposite as you can get in a RPG job class as one fights with pure physical attacks and one fights with magic. The Grass starters are the protected and the protector- Serperior the royal and Chesnaught the warrior.

I love the grass starters being based on prehistoric life, I theorize that grass type starters were once fossil pokemon, that purified perfectly, since the rock type is theorized to come from fossil impurities, or expired dna. Heck grass starters could also be prehistoric pokemon that survived mass extinctions. Venusaur- Dicynodonts Meganium- Sauropods Sceptile- Dilophosaurids, and Dromeosaurids Torterra- Ankylosaurids mixed with tortoises Serperior- Titanoboa Chesnaut- Glyphtodonts, Doedicurus, ect.

Darius Brown Chespin may not be based on an extinct reptile, but chesnaught is based on doedicurus which is a giant armored armadillo creature which is an extinct mammal. Heck some grass starters are based on modern creatures in the early forms such as chespin being a hedgehog, and treecko being based on a gecko. All of the grass starter's final evolutions are based on something that went extinct.

My starter Pokemon have had an incredible history of being female. My torterra from gen 4 was a lady (my first game I was 5 like a true sinnohfoetus) and both my greninja and my Delphox were female. So out of the four playthroughs I can actually remember 3 out of 4 have been female

Just my "speaking of..."-thoughts on this topic: I think it has to do with breeding. Since female Pokémon can be bred with any male of the same egg group, and starters are supposed to be special and unique, GF might have wanted to plant a little burden into the game, making it harder for players to breed them. :)

Another trend I (and many many others) have noticed is that grass starters tend to be based on reptiles (except for chespin), fire starters are somewhat based on the chinese zodiac, and water starters are all "amphibian" that is that can live both in water and land.

Bluespheal Just in case you wonder, in biology, "amphibians" actually have a more strict definition. They only include those which go through metamorphosis during their growth such as frogs and salamanders. Their aquatic larvae possess gills which change to lungs in their terrestrial adults. Their other features are moist skin and eggs without shell, etc. So technically only the Froakie family are amphibians. But if you define "amphibians" as "amphibious animals", then yes, all the water starters are amphibious.

Gotta love how delphox's name shares an origin with "dolphin" and it's weak to water. Then again, "delphi" is also related to "dauphin", which is a term for a French heir. Seems fitting for a Kalos starter. Apparently the word for dolphin ultimately comes from the Greek word for "womb". And guess where the one dolphin pokémon lives"? In the Cave of Origin, which is thought to represent birth, while Mt. Pyre represents death! Wow, this just gets deeper and deeper!

Infernape is my favorite Pokemon of all time! Clearly, the entire line is based off of, if not related to Dragon Ball Z because of the reasons stated in the video and the fact that Chimchar, Monferno, and Infernape all went Super Saiyan in the anime. Wouldn't it be insanely amazing if Mega Infernape had Inferno fur, had White Super Saiyan flames, and rode a flaming Nimbus while wielding a Fiery pole? My Pokemon Dream Team would consist of Infernape, Venusaur, Swampert, Raichu, Pigeot, and Vanniluxe, all able to use Mega evolution.

Serperior may be based on the titanoboa, an extinct giant snake, in keeping with the extinct animal theme the Grass Types have. And yes Torterra fits this too, Ankylosaurus looking thing that it is. The Fennekin lines as mentioned are foxes, which fall into the Canidae family, shared with wolves and dogs in keeping with the Chinese Zodiac. And of course all Water type starters are semi-aquatic.

Decidueye is based on an owl and an archer. Its name comes from deciduous trees which could explain its ghost typing. Deciduous trees die in winter. Coincidentally, Grass is weak to Ice. Incineroar is based on a tiger and a professional wrestler. A tiger since the stripes are really a dead giveaway. A professional wrestler because, its navel is a belt. Its Dark type could be a reference to the Attitude Era, which happened the same time as Pokemon's release. Primarina is based on a seal and an opera singer. Opera singer because it learns voice moves, and seal because, look at it. Fairy because opera sounds beautiful.
