Most of Lorelei's Ice types are part Water, which Charizard wants no part of (shoutouts to Dewgong having Thick Fat making Charizard's Fire moves even worse) and Lance sure as hell isn't a fun time with Gyarados, Aero, and Dragonite. I'll give you Bruno even with their better FRLG movesets, and maaaybe Agatha? Though Agatha's annoying no matter what. Meganium has a fine matchup against Jasmine and Pryce as well, as while Meganium can't do a ton to Jasmine's Magnemite, they can't do a ton to it either, same with Steelix to Meganium, and Pryce's Pokemon are all weak to Meganium. I won't deny Meganium being worse in their game overall compared to Charizard in their game, but I think you're overhyping Charizard and underplaying Meganium.

This is coming from a Charmander stan for whom Charizard is second only to Mewtwo in terms of favorite Pokémon of all time. The only Gym the Char line has a favorable matchup against is Erika. It's neutral to Koga and Sabrina except for the Venomoth. As a Charmander or Charmeleon it's neutral against Surge but as Charizard it's actually weak to the electricity. Fire is resistant to Fire, so he doesn't do so hot vs Blane. Brock and Misty body him. And while the flying type renders Charizard immune to the Ground type that Charmander and Charmeleon are weak to, Giovanni still has some Rock moves on his team. Charizard is a glass cannon who's really good against a lot of the rank-and-file trainers and wild pokémon you'll encounter in Kanto, but it still means starting with Charmander is the closest thing you get to Hard Mode in those games. And that's okay, because it teaches you to build up your team and keep them leveled for any situation. Same thing with Meganium.

Meganium is top tier in the meta of pokemon you would actually want to have irl. Canonically its breath can bring wilting plants back to life, it's a gardener's dream and it's so docile you know it won't wreck up the place.

Reviving flowers with its breath is not the only thing Meganium can do. The aroma of its flowers contains chemicals that dulls fighting spirit and aggression, so it can protect you in its own way. By the way, Bayleef's scent is energizing, so it's good if you need a pick-me-up for, or from, work. Just be careful to take deep breaths and not get into fights afterward.

When I was a child, some kid at my summer camp convinced me that Chikorita could learn fly if you didn't evolve it by the time you hit Cianwood. This made sense to my child brain, as clearly Chikorita's little leaf had the capacity to turn into a helicopter propeller. I deleted my save to get this rare elusive flying bean. My disappointment upon realizing the truth was immeasurable, but I had still grown very attatched to the little guy. Now, Chikorita is my go to starter for Gen 2 and I have loved it ever since.

I actually cannot concieve of why you could hate Meganium. It's adorable. Sure it's not super strong but, it's still an adorable, iconic and well designed Pokemon. I've used it on many playthroughs and it functions really well as a support Pokemon with Leech Seed, Reflect/Light Screen and powder moves to help its teammates.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the gen 2 starters didn't get their hidden abilities until gen 6. So even if Leaf Guard was a Hydration clone, Meganium would've gotten it when permanent weather was no longer a thing. And just look at how much better Feraligatr became with Sheer Force, it boosted up it's viability a lot. Giving Meganium Leaf Guard was such a missed chance to buff it.

I always felt the hatred for Meganium bled over from it's in-game performance in Johto which is not kind to grass types especially in the early game where a lot of players first impressions stem from even though I'd say it does decently well in the midgame and while it's not soloing anything in the late game it can be a great member of your team post Radio Tower takeover. Even though Venusaur was my first Pokemon even I can see that a lot of the praise it gets from its in-game performance in Kanto is because it defeats Brock and Misty and can resist Surge's electric moves but until Giovanni it ain't doing much against the rest of the gyms and really can only do something against Lorelei in the E4.

I'll always give credit to Meganium for being the starter who matches up best against Claire. I was jealous of my brother beating Claire while I struggled because he picked Chikorita while I chose Cindaquil. And honestly the Chikorita line was designed with a fairly simple winning strategy: chip away the opponent with poison powder+leech seed while tanking hits and healing up. It helps that both moves were buffed from Gen 1 to be twice as strong. Obviously kids don't have the patience to wait out those kinds of long games but you have to admit that it was well designed to pull off this strategy at the time.

I was gonna say something similar. Unfortunately the other starters can solo early game, with maybe just a little extra luck for Quilava to get through Rollout Miltank, so the Chikorita line just stands out as the worst choice if you rely heavily on the starter. As a reminder for what the original Gold/Silver had: Gust Pidgeotto and Fury Cutter Scyther. Awful only for the grass starter Rollout Miltank. Admittedly Bayleef probably matches best into it, but it was still bad if you didn't know what was happening. A Ghost gym that only uses the Gengar line, so Razor Leafing through is painful. A purchasable Fire Punch TM learnable by Typhlosion and Surf HM for the whole Feraligatr line available quite early, versus Meganium being stuck with Razor Leaf until you get an "upgrade" with Solarbeam.

Meganium is one of my all-time favorite Pokémon, and I have used it many, MANY times across playthroughs of many regions. Meganium has difficulties in Johto because Grass-types have difficulties in Johto. Use Meganium in any generation where Grass-types aren't crippled and it does just fine. The majority of people don't play competitively, and I prefer "judging" Pokémon more on how they function in the 10-20 hour story than at the Battle Tower or online. You can make ANY Pokémon work if you just put in the effort. Ledian is another one of my favorite Pokémon, and it's actually pretty good in Gen 2 if you know what you're doing.

I'd say Meganium shines as defensive support in the main story, since swords dance is an egg move, so it struggling with the first two gyms is probably an intentional design decision to tell you not to use it as a solo attacker. Once it learns reflect at level 12, the game plan for it should be a little clearer

What gets me about Meganium is how it’s emblematic of something I took for granted for a very, very long time, that being the importance of defensive Grass-Types and the ability to control the pace of the game. During the 2020s (that sounds so weird to say), Meganium’s only gone up in my rankings where during the 2010s Feraligatr was far and away my favorite Johto starter.

I went out of my way to dodge all spoilers about sword and shield to be able to play it blind on release. The day before I started playing it I was spoiled Sobble's evolutions. I would usually have been annoyed at being spoiled. Instead, I am very happy I was, for if I hadn't been spoiled I would have picked Sobble and watched it devolve into the abject monstrosity that is Inteleon. I was saved from feeling that despair and disappointment, and for that I am forever thankful.

The Gen 8 starters demonstrate the "new Pokemon are too humanoid" criticism pretty well. Sure, there were always 'humanshape' Pokemon like Mr. Mime, but those were discrete lines, and didn't apply to families that started out as other species like rabbits and newts. I don't even think that these designs are objectively bad, but they are clearly stylistically different from those of early gen starters.

Chikorita has always been one of my favorite starters, regardless of efficacy. I tend to gravitate towards Grass types, but they are _objectively_ game mechanically inferior to Fire and Water and have been ever since Gen 1 (where Fire was worse and by a lot).

They gave Meganium a dual Grass/Fairy type in Radical Red, which makes it quite useful. Solid defensively with a lot of nice resistances. Light screen/counter is a good combination.

In Pokemon Violet, I use Meganium in my sun team. It knows Sunny Day, Tera Blast, Solar Beam, and Synthesis. It holds an Absorb Bulb in case a water pokemon tries to target Torkoal to boost her Special Attack and uses Leaf Guard for status immunity. The Tera type is Fire because everything that's super effective to Fire is weak to Grass, plus it can resist moves super effective against grass like Ice, Bug, and Fire while Flying and Poison are Neutral. I've taken out half a team with a Meganium before.

My spicy take: in my head, Meganium is the Pokémon that Gold/Ethan starts his journey with. Two reasons for this: firstly, Typhlosion is by far the one that fits Silver best vibes-wise (Meganium seems too friendly and Feraligatr seems to goofy, but Typhlosion comes across as more aggressive, which fits him perfectly). Secondly, Gold/Ethan is meant to be a brilliant trainer - good enough to eventually defeat Red - and starting with Chikorita is essentially playing on hard mode - it makes sense that a very skilled trainer would succeed using a more challenging Pokémon.

Meganium is still one of my favorite Grass type Pokémon from gen 2. I really like just how simple but pleasant its design is. It isn't complicated but it is immediately recognizable to most players even if chances are you will never find a trainer or player use one. I hope it gets some love in Pokémon Legends Z-A because it along with how the anime had Chikorita and Bayleef really made me quite like the characters. It is just a very endearing Pokemon to see and listen to. I think the reason why so many people dislike Meganium is because of how if you picked Totodile, as you would, Bayleef would always give you trouble but after that battle, it never really keeps the threat of razor leaf. I love it quite a lot and hope more people find appreciation for it.

People have suggested giving Meganium Friend Guard as an ability, and I think that would actually be pretty great. It fits thematically as one of the more derpy/happy starters, and considering people have even tried Spewpa competitively just because of the ability, I think Meganium would suddenly become quite popular as a doubles supporter.

Used to dislike Meganium but then I used it on a HG playthrough, made it so It learn leech seed with a sunflora and single handenly hold itself agaisnt Lance and Light screen + reflect really put it into work and my entire team was knock out, except our friendly green dinossaur and won. A lot of people say that Chikorita is really bad in Johto, but I've also experienced how that's not really true. It's an amazing support tank that can easily take a super effective hit or two and set up what you need for your main attacker of the team. It IS a very unintuitive Pokémon to use when you're a dumb kid who only sees value in moves that deal damage, though. (And I'm not saying this to insult anybody. We ALL went through this dumb kid phase)

first impressions go a long way, and in meganium's debut generation it has terrible match ups against most of the gym leaders including the first two gyms, along with a bad 55 base power STAB as its best move for the majority of the game, while being slow and bulky which all make it a terrible in-game pokemon at least for a starter. Most people see meganium and remember how much they struggled with it on their gold/silver in game team when they say it's bad. The fact that it's ALSO bad competitively just adds fuel to the fire.

I don't know if I would label emboar as "the worst" starter, but I would certainly label it as "the most forgetable". This thing has NOTHING that makes it interesting. - it does not have a mega evolution like the gen 1 and gen 3 starters. -it did not get its own z-crystal -its typying is not original for a starter -it does not have any regional forms -its stats are trash (Its speed is not fast enough to outrun anything and not slow enough to abuse trick room, the defences aren't high enough to make up for its low speed) -it's movepool isn't doing it any favours -it's hidden ability is totally lame. -it has never had any success in OU.even as a gimmicky niche. -it didn't get a gigantamax It has nothing that makes it fun to use. The only reason people hate Meganium is that Chikorita and Bayleef get beaten by the first two Gym Leaders in the Johto region. When it finally evolves into Meganium, it has to fight Team Rocket, which uses Poison-type Pokémon. Then, the Ice-type Gym Leader Pryce has Pokémon that are either Water or Ground types as well, which helps a bit. Even the Johto League features a Poison-type trainer, and the last opponent at the Johto League has Dragon- and Flying-type Pokémon. Playing with a Grass-type Pokémon is like playing on hard mode when you're in the Johto region; it's not Meganium's fault. Using a Grass-type starter is much easier in any other region than in Johto.

Do you know how many times I had to go to the Pokémon Center because Meganium was poisoned by Team Rocket? Typhlosion and Feraligatr just have an easier time beating Johto and Poison-type Pokémon. Typhlosion can learn Dig/Earthquake, and a lot of Poison types are dual-typed like Bug and Grass, which Flamethrower beats easily. Feraligatr can learn Ice attacks, which are strong against Zubat, Golbat, and Crobat.

As someone who loves Meganium casually, and outside of its generation, I thought the problem with Meganium was largely that Gen 2 / Johto in particular was not very nice to Grass Types. Weak to the first, second, 4th indirectly, 6th, 7th, and 8th Gyms, with only a good match up against Chuck's Poliwrath in the 5th Gym, *maybe* Jasmine's Steelix in the 6th, and struggling as much as most anyone else against that Miltank in the 3rd. Like, if Grass wasn't dunked on so hard in that Gen in general, there wouldn't have been so much room to meme Meganium into "terribad" territory. I doubt any grass type starter would have liked to be the Johto starter, frankly. *Maybe* one with a dual type that helps it out, like Torterra, Chesnaught, or Decidueye. Though I'll defend Feraligatr with my dying breath, because that mother fucker goes hard. Outclassed or not, Water Crocodile is *rad*.

I think an underrated consideration in Meganium being bad in-game is that you've got more than just the gyms to contend with. You've also got Team Rocket, whose poison-types resist grass and are immune to poison powder, so you're forced to rely on normal type moves to chip them down. Makes the entire run slower when every grunt's Zubat or Koffing will take several turns to die.

Completely agree. Let's talk National Dex. With the recent terastalization vote resulting in a ban I think its time we start discussing some threats that I think will be staples of the metagame. The most slept on of these, in my opinion, being Meganium. This mon is simply incredible in the current meta.. For starters, meganium absolutely wrecks common Koko/Ival structures with the right moves. It can infamously beat Heatran by outspeeding and using earth quake to hit back with a superduper effective Earth attack! Another big advantage Meganium offers is being an incredible answer to rain, tanking hits from Mega swampart, Barraskewda, etc with ease. This is really just the tip of the iceberg, as such I think it's time we start seriously considering Meganium as a meta staple.
