Also, when Raichu gets its first major appearance in Surge's gym, the theme of the episode was that Raichu and Surge were bullies and that Pikachu didn't want to evolve and be like Raichu.

If I remember correctly this culminates in a different episode where Ash is Gung ho about getting Pikachu to evolve but Pikachu resists his efforts, and Ash has to learn to respect Pikachu vs just blindly trying to make him as powerful as possible.

The Surge episode makes it clear that a Raichu SHOULD be stronger than a Pikachu as long as you train it enough before giving it a thunder stone, but the show has always gotten around that by having Ash’s pikachu go on to become unusually strong for a member of its species so it can now match raichus. Even raichus that should be faster as well as stronger than it because they know the speed-based moves as well as having better base speed.

I agree that you should believe in your Pokémon’s ability, but at some point, in MY opinion at some point you should evolve Pikachu. Because being a Raichu would improve the life of the Pokémon. You would be stronger and be more confident in it’s ability, and just be happier.

I always saw Marill as sort of a "water Pikachu" and Azumarill as a "water Raichu". I'm Team Raichu. He's a cute, squishy boy. I especially love my pancake eating, surfing A-Chu in Pokemon Go. In Go Battle League he'd get me so many opponent's shields during the first pairing.

Fun fact, you LEFT OUT even MORE Raichu insults you could have mentioned. So in PokémonGO, pikachu has a bunch of versions with various hats, “hat pikachus”. INITIALLY, the game allowed you to evolve the hat pikachus into hat Raichu’s but at some random point, and for no known reason at all, they STOPPED hat Pikachus from being evolvable! They LIFTED Raichu up, only to SMACK HIM DOWN… in PokémonGO. I have screenshots I can send to you if you’d like. I have collector hat Raichu’s and a lot of hat Pikachus that can’t evolve…. Poor… Raichu. 😢

Yeah, when I started playing pokemon go, I caught a straw hat Pikachu and didn't do anything with it. I came back to pokemon go in July 2021 and found out that all costume Pikachu now can't evolve, except my one straw hat Pikachu.

Also to add to this Alolan Raichu is also (at least partially) a reference to Puka, a PIKACHU that appeared in the anime who was a surfer along with its trainer has blue eyes and can psychically predict when waves are coming. Even when Raichu gets something unique its in reference and only because of Pikachu

the far more likely explanation, in my opinion, is that both Puka and Alolan Raichu are based on the surfing Pikachu event from Yellow, a Pikachu that learns Surf (alongside what was already mentioned by lordofninjas1)

@@orbracha25 that is the original, though not by much, from what I'm seeing Pokemon Yellow only predates the Puka episode by about a month in Japan, and predates the American released Pokemon stadium by about a year, though the Japanese only Pokemon Stadium is older than Yellow. I think too that Alolan Raichu is a surfer because surfing is a big thing in Hawaii, the basis for Alola, and they have been pretty good about getting at least some Pokemon themed to the region.

As someone who’s favorite Pokémon is Raichu (Yes, I know what my username is) I can agree that Raichu gets the shafted constantly. Really the only saving grace it has at this point is whenever Pikachu is available, Raichu is available by default. He doesn’t get that much merchandise or appearances or attention and he’s in his preevolution’s shadow but at least he’s still there. I’ve had to do my fair share of defending Raichu over the years, but now I’m just happy he gets a participation trophy. Also can I just mention that most of Raichu’s Pokedexes have to do with electricity and how strong it is, except for Ultra Moon, which says “Because so many Trainers like the way Pikachu looks, you don’t see this Pokémon very often.” Wow, that stings.

It's even worse in Pokémon Go now as well. You used to be able to evolve any Pikachu forms into Raichu then in 2019 they made the random choice to start making it impossible to evolve most new Pikachu forms.

I still remember Raichu’s debut in the original series as Lt. Surge’s Pokémon. How he utterly wiped the floor with Pikachu using his stronger electric attacks and brute strength. It ended up being a defining moment for Pikachu where he refused the thunderstone and then beat Raichu in the rematch by using his superior speed to dodge the slower Raichu’s attacks until he was too tired to fight back. The point they made was that Lt. Surge evolved his Raichu too early and so it never learned how to be fast like Ash’s Pikachu. So what did I do in the games? Trained my Pikachu until they learned their best moves, THEN evolved them. Put the speed and the brawn together! Best of both worlds! That’s how I feel what Raichu should be in the series, an adult Pikachu that’s reached his full potential. At least back in Fire Red and Leaf Green, there was just no reason NOT to evolve to a Raichu. Now like you said they have all these special moves only Pikachu can use so he never has to use that thunder stone. But man I’d love to see an episode where Pikachu faces off against a rival Raichu, one that has as much battle experience as he does but chose to evolve and reach a level of skill and power that Pikachu can’t keep up with.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I feel like even Alolan Raichu does Raichu somewhat of a disservice. I always thought the appeal of Raichu was that it was the tougher, more confident alternative to Pikachu. Lt. Surge's Raichu (from what I remember) was portrayed as a menace to Pikachu in the anime, and in the Pikachu's Vacation short, a Raichu hung out with a Marill and Snubbull as a gang of bullies. Looking at Raichu's idle stance in the 3D mainline games, it's clear this electric mouse is more battle ready than its younger relatives. While I appreciate alternate forms for Raichu, the Alolan form strips Raichu of what makes it unique from the Pikachu family in favor of making it cuter, which I thought was a role already fulfilled by Pichu. If we're going to get more Raichu representation, I think it'd better be in the form of catering to what makes Raichu stand out from its younger siblings.

Agreed. Raichu was an overbearing force to adapt against and defeat in the anime, with Ash's Pikachu having to learn to focus on it's higher speed to make up for the weaker attack. That slower but stronger edge should be focused on more, whereas Alolan Raichu sorta ends up looking closer to Pikachu.

I think they also hate Spearow, too; wherever Ash or anyone get attacked by any flying type Pokémon, it's almost ALWAYS by Spearows. Even Nebby gets attacked by them. I low key wish Smash Brothers would give us Raichu as a DLC character. Where Pichu is faster than Pikachu but weaker and with damage, Raichu would be stronger than Pikachu attack wise but slower in reference to its size and Surge’s own Raichu. Wow, I realised that Raichu didn't get much love, but I have to confess, I didn't realise it was this bad. I think the most egregious thing is how much they laud on pikachu stat wise. I mean, just let it go, Pikachu was always a B tier pokemon for battle, just leave it there, it's not going to stop it from being people's favourite. I remember back in the day Raichu was the guy I always put on my team to battle my cousin. He LOVED Pikachu, he always carried a Pidgeot, and he always started with Squirtle.. So I used to clean house with Raichu because those were 3 easy wins right from the jump. Especially back when using Flash was a game changer. If his Alakazam didn't drop Raichu before I could spam Flash, sometimes Raichu would just plow through his entire team. This wasn't usually the case, but there were times when Raichu was a team buster. Everyone's infatuation with Pikachu back in the day allowed me to score some pretty easy wins. Mega Kick! Pika-who?

If Gorochu had happened, there would be no Pichu. Not sure who would take Pichu’s place in Melee on that timeline, I’m guessing Marrill due to it being such a major mascot for the 2nd Generation. Since the 5th Gen introduced Eviolite, that could’ve boosted Raichu’s usage if it did have Gorochu as an evolved form (assuming Gorochu’s defense and special defense didn’t exceed 110 and 160).

Stoked Sparksurfer has a 100% chance to paralyze the target on top of the damage it deals, so it's not the exact same as Gigavolt Havoc. It's not a great secondary effect since you usually want to instantly kill something with a Z-move, but at least it's something. Also, 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt is only usable by a special event Pikachu. Either way though, both of Pikachu's Z-moves are essentially useless, since you need to replace Light Ball with a Z-Crystal to use them (which is never worth it for Pikachu). Thus, a Z-move used by Raichu will always be stronger than one used by Pikachu thanks to its higher base stats.

You make many good points, the strongest of which I think is how none of the Pikachu clones evolve. I will say just for the sake of argument that Stoked Starsurfer is still objectively better than either of Pikachu's Z-moves. If you do the math, Raichu still does more damage with this move, because Pikachu can't hold the Light Ball if it wants access to either of its Z-moves. Pikachu's stats are just too low for the power level of these moves to compensate. Although, the fact that Pikachu even has two still applies. RIP our friend Raichu.

Yeah argee almost the same thing for almost all eletrical type that ain't pikachu or any of the pikaclone and I hate the fact eletrical is the 4th rarest which this is averice and they constantly make an eletrical type or had an eletrical spicalist up tii gen 8 amd while psychic is like the 5th common type which in my opinion shouldn't be it not nature it using mind or intellectual and not everyone or even most animal had high IQ

Two more points to add to your list: 1. Alola-Raichu may be a cool surfer, but Pikachu did it first. You could trade the starter Pikachu from the yellow edition to Pokemon Stadium on the N64, do some shenanigans with it and transfer it back to the yellow edition. Then, at the beach south of Fuchsia City, there´s the house of the Surfer Dude who you should visit. This way, Pikachu can learn the attack Surfer. 2. In the first season of the anime, when Ash faces the Raichu of Lt. Surge, he wants to evolve his Pikachu. But it actively refuses to do so, just like in the game. Even Pikachu doesn´t like Raichu.

I’ve been a Raichu fan ever since it was introduced against Lt. Surge and yeah. Pokémon company does try everything to shine away from Raichu. It was only in the last 10 years we finally got more Raichu merchandise. In the recent Pokemon anime series, Raichu made some more notable appearances. Now it seems they are trying harder to give all the battle gimmicks to Pikachu so Raichu can’t be used at all. But I am happy to say that as Raichu fans, we do oversee all the BS, and we are going to continue to give Raichu love ❤️

My favourite Legendary is one that gets shafted a lot. Both Suicune and Entei have had their own movies, but definitely not Raikou. At best it shows up in the Zoroark movie alongside the other two. Even the Anime loves to showcase Suicune (with Go actually catching one) more than Entei or Raikou, who has made only minor appearances and one of them as a dream Piplup had.

Don't worry bud, there is a Raikou movie. "The Legend of Thunder!" is a Raikou-themed Pokémon movie that came out in 2001 for Japanese audiences, and only started getting dubbed into English in 2005. That said, the dub kinda messes with it a lot, so if you go looking for it, definitely look for the subbed original. And, oh yeah, it doesn't follow Ash or his crowd at all, it follows three more-or-less unique protagonists, so Nintendo probably tries to pretend it doesn't exist as much as they can.

Even managed to trade one in on my Yellow Version. As the games came out, I noticed how badly they nerfed Raichu and it's really sad to see them continuing to make Raichu useless.

@@at8439 no, nothing new for dunsparce other than being catchable in sword and shield. That's exactly why I think it's Glameow though. The upcoming sinnoh remakes are only the second game where you can catch it in the wild. Plus, you can only catch it in one version of the sinnoh games, making it by far the Pokémon in the fewest regional dexes.

Honestly, it's almost surprising that when GameFreak was pruning the Pokédex in Sw/Sh that Raichu wasn't among the many casualties. That said, I might dispute that Pichu is the Pika-clone of gen-2. There's also another cute little mouse which looked so much like Pikachu that prior to release fans assumed it must be a new evolution and dubbed it "Pikablu". Of course now we know this Pokémon to be Maril, although unlike other Pika-clones it was water not electric, but this was only gen-2 so GameFreak might not yet have fallen into that rut. Other similarities include that like Pikachu, Maril also actually evolves and received a prevolution in the generation following its introduction. Also in the generation following its introduction, Marril gained a way to double its attack power, albeit as an ability instead of an item.

To be fair concerning Smash, Pichu was just a strictly worse version of Pikachu when it was introduced in Melee, meant as a joke character. It wasn't until it came back in Ultimate that they decided to give it increased power compared to Pikachu as a tradeoff for being lighter and damaging itself when attacking, since Ultimate tried to have every character be viable.

To be fair, I don't actually mind Pikachu's popularity. I think it's cool and fun. But I've always been frustrated with the fact that Raichu was basically ignored and effectively outplayed power-wise due to the popularity of Pikachu. I do feel that Raichu should have maintained its increased relative power. I also always thought it weird that you couldn't evolve your Pikachu wearing a hat into a Raichu wearing that hat. Actually, Stoked Sparksurfer not only does high damage but it paralyzes your opponent in battle as well so it's not exactly the same as Gigavolt Havoc, in addition to its ability, Surge Surfer which increases its speed to up to 700 when exposed to an electrical terrain. You're not giving Alolan Raichu enough credit. 😔

Porygon is another victim of Pikachu. Because of the only episode it appeared in causing seizures in children, it has never appeared in another episode of the anime. However, the seizure-inducing incident in the episode was caused by Pikachu zapping some missiles causing the flashing lights. Porygon had nothing to do with it! #FreePorygon

There are a number of weird things about gym power levels that don't make much sense. One longstanding theory that I believe had some backing from bits of game lore and anime is that gym leaders shift around their teams based on the challenger. Wouldn't be too surprising if they're also not trying their hardest tactically.

I have a Raichu poster on my wall :D had it for over 2 years now. Saw it at a convention, thought whoa, that's weird how did this picture get past the production line. Surprised the company didn't burn it. Its the only poster I will hang on my wall. It feels like a rare find, more legendary than the legendary pokemon. I definitely prefer Raichu over Pikachu. I just had this amazing brainstorm! Since there's many of these special stones that evolve a Pokemon or one that keeps a Pokemon from evolving. What if there was a special stone that "De-Evolve" a Pokemon? So here's an idea for another Arc for the Pokemon anime. Ash's Pikachu had accidentally evolve into an Raichu. The Professor of the region tells Ash about this super rare "De-Evolve Stone". It will take Ash (& company) most of, if not the entire Arc to "De-Evolve" Raichu back into a Pikachu. Since Ash's Pikachu is now a Raichu, Raichu well develop new character traits, learn new moves, maybe wanting to stay in it's pokeball.

Ehh, I never considered Alolan Raichu to be something positive for Raichu, but instead as Game Freak's attempt to replace it... which is my opinion of every regional variant, ESPECIALLY the ones that have evolutions where the originals do not. Well, at least the anime occasionally has a Raichu dumpster Ash's Pikachu. My favorite is when it pinned Pikachu to a wall by its neck and point blank Hyper Beamed it in the face!

Fun fact: pikachu was actually supposed to be the baby in the evolution line. Raichu is probably treated like the middle child because, unfortunately, he was. He was designed as a middle evolution, not as cool or important as his older or younger brother. The final form of pikachu was SUPPOSED to be Gorochu, who they removed because it was apparently too broken, but who knows because this was the same company who designed gen 1 and all it's bull. So now raichu's stuck as a middle stage mon that no one really likes all that much. honestly it sucks to hear, but maybe with enough love, gorochu can come back and people will have a reason to acknowledge raichu, regardless of how long you utilize him.

Not only that but Alolan Raichu due to its dual typing has more weaknesses. I would consider Ice types in general to be mistreated. You usually find them late in the game, and have to level up. They have many weaknesses (being glass canons at best). And their only advantage of being effective against dragons has been stripped with the addition of more Dragon types and with the newer Fairy type. The Pokémon Co. has made ice types useless in most cases, as well as hard to use as their Ice attacks are available at higher levels than when found.

Am I alone in thinking Smeargle gets too little love? It's gimick is that it can learn any move it sees, so you can customise it to whatever role in your squad you need it to be, but because it's such a jack of all trades, it often gets overlooked by the more specialised pokemon who actually *have* evolved forms, or can breed with any other type of pokemon, or have unique mega ultra giga forms.

So once I realized this was focusing primarily on the games I knew this wasn't going to come up, but one of the first times we see/hear about Raichu in the anime Ash has to debate evolving pikachu in order to win at a gym but evolution changes the pokemon's personality and he would have lost his best friend but Pikachu was willing to do that for him so Ash could win...and I felt that for anyone like me who only ever watched the anime, Raichu became a pitiable pokemon. So I've always loved Raichu and wonder how many sweet 'chus were evolved just for the stats.

Worst part is that is a lie the only pokemon to change personalities was Charmander and that was a reference to how traded pokemon wouldn't obey you if you didn't have enough badges, so he only changed because Ash wasn't his og trainer.

Also regular Raichu's dex entry in one of the Alola Games (don't remember which one) says, that "Raichu is a rare sight in Alola, because people don't like to evolve their cute Pikachu". Just another slap in the face xD
