The refusal to release is a softlock prevention that prevents you from releasing the last Pokemon that can learn a specific HM. Since Alpha only had Mudkip and Castform, Castform is his only mon that can learn Flash.

Actually only half true, its a soft lock prevention mechanic, but not for HMs, just in general as well as trading shinanigens, file corruption prevention, that sort of thing. GF made it so you cant use the trade systems to SL yourself without having at least 2 pokemon caught in the game, one of them Not knowing ANY HMs

Mudkip is my favourite. Treecko's eyes are kinda creepy in most of his sprites and Torchic is fine but Mudkip is the best Hoenn starter. I love all of them though.

Adrive they give you castform so if you are doing something like this where you have only have one pokemon and you need two pokemon to be able to fight the tate and liza. You can't release it because you can't do doudle battles with 1 pokemon.

Fun-Fact....aoparently yes. For a while, Mudkip's best WATER move....is Water Gun. In Gen 3, Mudkip doesn't learn Hydro Pump until LEVEL! 42! And that's the penultimate move Mudkip can learn before getting Endeavor. And since he needs all of the HMs, yeah that means pretty much No Hydro Pump

I *thought* my favorite starter was Mudkip, but then I played ORAS. The plan was to import a shiny Mudkip I'd hatched in another game, so I chose Treecko for grass coverage. This Treecko, it turned out, was an _absolute beast_ and was the undisputed star of my team. And then she evolved into Sceptile and I started using her mega evolution form and that sealed it for me.
