Polar Lights Star Trek 1:1000 USS Enterprise Preview

This video previews my final project for 2020, Polar Lights 1:1000 USS Enterprise as seen in Trek Discovery Season 1. Here I provide a brief look at the model and summarize my plans for the build. Also included are photos showing examples of completed builds of the kit. The video wraps up with news of an new STL file for 3D printing NOMAD.

Hey Daniel....we’re in the same boat for sure regarding the show. This Enterprise is a beautiful design. I saw a 4ft model of it at the last Vegas Trek convention in 2019 and was so excited about it. So glad they releaed the model. Thanks for the comment and for watching

Looking forward to seeing you go through the build as well as the finished kit. I am currently working on this kit. I did decided to use the Tenacontrols kit because the bussards are led chaser boards to mimic the rotation...there have been some complaints/ concerns with the motor noise, also I wanted to add blinking nav lights. I have polar lights light kit and plan on doing another version with a different registry and want to see if I can add blinking navs and replace the warp chiller grill bulbs with strips to remove hot spots...although I did affix parchment paper to the inside of my current build to get a nice even glow. Can't wait to see what you do with this .

Thanks....I followed Boyd's build on Trekworks. He ended up engineering his own system but a lot was from Tena controls. I debated on which kit to use but settled on the Polar Lights kit because of cost. I've heard the same complaints about the motors. Thanks again for your comments....will see how this turns out.

Thanks Marc....I've decided on following Boyd's lead from trekworks regarding the color. He suggested Pewter from Folk Art. Looks like a good choice

I started mine, with a dark steel color. I am on the lights of the saucer at the moment and am thinking there is to much wire, so may splice, shorted then resolder so j do have the wire being possibly visible through the clear domes. Look forward to seeing how you tackle this.

Hi Ian....I decided to go with Pewter from FolkArt which is similar to the sliver/gray the kit comes molded in. This was recommended by Boyd from Trekworks who had an interesting idea regarding color choice. One, he felt the chrome/silver finishes that many of used were too bright and second, the decals were made to place against the color the kit was molded in. Makes sense. I bought the color and it looks pretty good. Just food for thought. As for the wires, you might want to try supergluing some of them down to keep them out of the way. Another video series that you might find helpful is on Star Trek Model Kit Previews. You can see how placed his wires. He did use the Polar Lights kit as well. I recommend watching the warp nacelle video that he did for the same reason. Thanks for your comment and for watching. Hey John.....totally agree. When you think about it, the one star of Trek that's been missing all these years is the Enterprise, particularly 1701 with no bloody A, B, C, D or E Lol. I sure hope they get it right with Strange New Worlds.

Scan and print the decal reference? Run it off several times and you have a mighty fine mask reference for painted Aztec. (Of course, Lou Dalmaso’s would be better...)

Yep, If I build another in the future I would probably use the paint masks instead, just a personal choice. I've used Lou's masks before and they work great.

This model on my bench right now, just as a fYI parts28 glues to the motor use a q-tip dapped with CA as to not get too much glue. I called round 2 to find out how to connect those 2 and they told me there been some modelers locking up the motors putting too much glue. I made a how to on my channel

I wish there was aztec decals in the early 90s, I painted my 1701-D individually. It took a lot more time but turned out well; until my cat destroyed it.

I go back and forth about the decals. They are much easier of course to apply but definitely can look like decals. I'm sure yours turned out awesome. If you ever want it featured on a Hot Off the Bench segment, feel free to send me a few pics of it.

Yeah, but can I buy a replacement box that doesn't feature artwork portraying the dismal cast of present-day wannabe Star Trek? The model itself is mostly okay, but I can't quite bring myself to add it to my collection of PL Star Trek models yet.

No rush on this one. If Strange New Worlds is a hit, I wouldnt doubt they'd release a box with just the cast of that show on it. I've watched every Trek series and sad to say Disco was the first one I couldn't get into for a number of reasons. Lets hope the new show goes in a different direction. This Enterprise re-design is very cool though having elements of TOS, Refit and NX -01 all mixed in. Thanks for watching

This looks like a great kit, but... (and there's always a 'but', it seems) this all too common practise of making aztec decals an additional product to buy, when they are essential to the model is very frustrating. The lighting kit I can understand, but not the decals. Secondly, the 1/1000 scale seems very off to me, and doesn't match any of the other 1/1000 Star Trek kits from Polar Lights. I would rather have seen a smaller kit with all the decals provided than this. I'm sure it will build into a very impressive display piece, especially with your skills applied to it, but with those frustrations I mentioned, I don't imagine I'll be likely to get one.

You can just call it 1:500 scale and then it fits nicely with the 2009 movie version kit from Revell

Yes I'm not sure how they decided on the scale but I do think the 18" length makes it easy to display as I am running out of room. Also I quite agree about the decals. I hesitated investing in this kit but I really do like the ship and ended up blowing the budget on this one. Thanks for watching. Appreciate your compliments too. We'll see how this turns out.
