Thanks for posting this, I also struggled on that second bolt until I tried Brian kennedy’s jam nut suggestion. I appreciate people posting videos like this where it shows the real pain points and how to work through them instead of acting like it all came apart super easy.

Man I was dying watching your video!! I feel your pain. Today I was working on an abused Sportsman 600 that the bushings where completely gone. I replaced bushings on my older one years ago but didn't have as much difficulty as I had today. It as interesting to see someone else dealing with the same problem. Thanks for recording it. For the record I have an older 96 Sportsman 500 that I drive like it's stolen. I bought it new in 1996. It has been great and if something is damaged or broken I fix it. They will last for years if you maintain them.

Great video! I watched it to get some clues before changing those front swingarm bushings on my 1998 and 1999 Polaris Big Boss 500s. I saw the difficulty you had getting both the front and back bolt out because of the way they lock against each other on the rod. Mine was difficult. The rear bolt came out easy but the front bolt was seized into one rod. To solve the problem I took the rear bolt out and got another bolt (3/8" 16tpi) and put a nut on it and screwed it into the rear and locked it down hard with the nut, then I was able to get the front bolt out. Then I just loosened up the rear lockdown nut and removed the rear bolt I put in. The front bolts and bushings were the worst. The front bolts were seized and the old front bushings were stuck in and difficult to remove, but the rear bolts and bushings came out easily. It looks like the front part of the swingarm takes all the abuse and corrosion. The rods on both sides were in terrible shape for lack of greasing and had to be replaced along with the bushings.

Love your videos man. Good information! I just got a 04 sportsman. About the same as yours. I noticed the rear bushings are in really bad shape. Have checked the front yet but I'll be getting into this stuff soon. Seems similar to my rzr suspension. I replaced those bushings last year.

Not criticizing but you should have cleaned out the A arm itself and then the tube and the bushings would have gone in easier. As for greasing it ……. I have a 2004 Sportsman 700 and they don’t even come with zerk fittings. Grease doesn’t really do much for this other than help stop the tube from rusting. The friction point is really the plastic bushing and if you think about it this part doesn’t really get to move a lot. It’s not like a bearing which is constantly spinning.

How I got the bolts out on my Trail Boss 350 was I took one bolt out, then I slid the A-arm off of the shaft a little ways and put a pair of vice grips on the shaft to turn the other bolt out. (Obviously this isn't the best way because you don't really want to chowder up the shaft). Polaris really should have keyed the shaft to the A-arm or something so you can turn the bolts without it turning.
@thebasshunter
@thebasshunter 3 жыл бұрын
That sounds like ok way of getting it off. Did you have problems getting it back on?
@kr00k3d100
@kr00k3d100 3 жыл бұрын
@@thebasshunter It worked out alright, but when I pulled the a-arm out to get the vice grips on, I pulled the CV shaft out too far. I had to unclamp the boot to put it back in. For the other side I threaded a nut onto one of the bolts part way and stuck it in the a-arm. I tightened the nut up against the bracket with the bolt hanging out a ways to loosen the other one. Then since it was only threaded in a little bit, I was able to unthread the first bolt (the one with the nut) without spinning the shaft.

When you were trying to get the bolt out the other end it looks if though you were trying to turn the bolt the wrong way it looks as if you were tightening it up instead of turning it away to loosen it I think that was your problem
@thebasshunter

No sir, what you don’t know is that the bar is a Solid bar. So if you turn one side of the bar. The other side of the bar turns the nut the opposite way that it needs to be turned. So you have to fight that to get both sides off and both sides on.

@@thebasshunter Hawkeye and sportsman are similar quads. Same bushing. Guy bought 5 years ago Hawkeye. And newer did service. Front arm bushing are so rusty . I brake the bolts. Front arm support hole looks like egg shape.. Plastics frombarm didn't move. So I melt the arm to remove bushing. Front brake pads only mental. I order 3 litres gearbox oil special for polaris.

@@JB-fb9qe If you jack the tires off the ground and give them a cross way shake. If it moves back and forth the bearings are bad. Don’t forget to check the tire rod ends. To see if they have any play.

Shawndogger69 dont be a troll man. When your trying to work on something and talk at the same time, it's easy to make a mistake. Its part of human error. Had you paid attention, you would have noticed he had a pop up that corrected his own error, therefore it wasn't necessary for you to point out what he already knew. Try having some understanding and maybe others will have understanding when you make a human error.
