John, I owned horses most of my adult life and if people could educate themselves about the way a horse sees and what their view of the world is, plus the fact they are prey animals they would understand why they shy and dance about. Sorry about the run on sentence but it really bothers me the way some of the tourists approach those majestic animals.

@@marysewitsky4823 We had 2 situations regarding protestors. One was non stop, day and night, in our downtown capital city, Ottawa Canada. It disrupted people going to work, businesses, entrances to buildings set on fire, carnival, campground atmosphere, people couldn't sleep. Any money raised by sympathizers was seized, company trucks confiscated, and owners of their trucks ran out of fuel, to get back home. Second situation, when the protestors moved to the capital of our province Toronto, the Mayor set up boundaries away from the city core, were there wasn't as much attention paid them. They didn't like that, so they moved on to the US/Canada border, after just a few days of disruption.

It's Sunday 19th today and I've just come back from the seafront at Southsea. It was pretty busy and a new security guard at the pier was complaining that it was really busy. His view didn't last long when a long standing guard and a few locals, including myself, told him to wait till next weekend. The May bamk holiday. And if he thinks that's busy the following weekend is the D Day remembrance at the war memorial on the common. The King and Queen and Prince William as well as half the government will be here. I'm staying in my garden half a mile away and watching everyone coming and going to the ceremony. 😊

In order for the Guard to have more control over the horses head movement I noticed the bit has been moved further back in the horses mouth. This also may prevent them from playing with the bit in their mouths. The horses play with the bit out of boredom. You know the sound it's makes. Like a clanking of metal. Horses are very smart.

Wow, kinda surprised the pontoon at the river was still afloat!! That’s a lot of people…..and tbh John, there’s plenty of indoor/mostly indoor things to see and do in London to make it worth getting out and about even when the weather isn’t great….there’s the churches, St Paul’s, or Westminster, or the Tower, or one of the museums, the Natural History or the V&A or one of the many littler ones like the Soames, or the shopping arcades, or Horrids(not much of a shopper😂) Poor police horse was NOT happy about that gazebo. Hopefully that shuts up the “the police horses don’t shy at things…..why can’t the army train their horses like them” crowd. A horse ALWAYS has the potential to shy……it’s an animal not a machine, and no amount of training will prevent it. The important thing is that they trust their rider enough to work thru the fear. That first horse looks like Q10 to me….aaaand there’s the first utter stupidity of the day. Going up to a horse carrying food, and THEN sticking your food smelling fingers into said horses face. She was lucky she didn’t get bitten, and would’ve richly deserved it. Nice to see Weygood again too, such a lovely boy with his distinctive blaze.

Regarding Q10: the noise he makes is in his nose and throat. It is a normal noise of interest and/or startle. I mostly associate it with deep curiosity. Q10 uses it most of the horses at Guard, but all the horses are able to make the same noise. Similar with the froth; to me, it seems Q10 might be higher energy or more nervous at his post. Quite honestly, the bits are a straight-bar curb. There are much harsher bits that exist, but to me, I feel all the Guard horses show at least some signs (excessive head tossing is universal!) of being in at least some discomfort from the straight-bar curb used. I love it when the Guards use the snaffle instead, though it is small in diameter and needs gentle use. I do not go so far as to advocate bits not be used, but a gentler bit that still retains the appearance but is gentler could reduce the amount of acting up that the Guard horses display. Aaaaannndddd I am just offering my opinion, based on my studies of my own horse when she was diagnosed with bony deposits on the bars (the spot in the horse's mouth where teeth are nornally absent and where bits are designed to painlessly rest-that does not always happen but we try). She had to have them surgically repaired and I never rode in anything but a gentle bit after. Bitless did not work for her; she would dangerously run off.

I would be constantly wiggling my feet, wondering where the ground is, dismounting Q10 and Warlord. They are both magnificent.

Do you ever wonder if the horses like the sound of their clippity clops? Sometimes it sounds so melodic. BTW, Dear John, have you missed me? I haven't commented for a few weeks. I broke my dominant arm and it was in a cast. Since I am a classically trained typist, I've never done well with the hunt and peck method so I rarely touched my keyboard until I had the use of both hands once again. I have watched every video, of course. They helped me through the long days and I did talk to you and share my thoughts via television. 😸

Could any of you lovely equestrians out there please explain the difference in the two different reins and what each of them do? I have noticed that they change using them as a main rein depending on the horse. I would imagine one is longer than the other and maybe more of tighter control? Thanks guys. Another great video as always thank you John ❤

One rein controls the bridoon(a smaller snaffle designed for use in a double bridle. This controls general steering by controlling the position of the horses head thru placing pressure on the bars of the mouth(this is a toothless area between the incisors at the front, and the molars at the back. Pressure to the right results in a trained riding horse “yielding” to that side or turning, and same for the left. The other, narrower(usually) rein controls the “curb” This is a flat chain that lies flat in the chin groove just above the mouth. The effect of the curb is to ask the horse to yield thru the mouth and poll(spot where the head hinges on the neck just behind the ears) bringing the head into the body instead of throwing it up. Usually most work is done using the bridoon, but the curb is helpful if the horse resists as it brings the head into a place where the bridoon can be effective. In certain cases such as a dressage test, a light contact is held on both reins, but with the troopers you’ll usually see the curb rein lying loose. Please be aware this is a really simplistic description of a fairly complex interaction, and doesn’t cover all the details and nuances in any way……whole books have been written on that.

@@paulinemegson8519 Wow thank you so much Pauline I must admit I had to read your answer a few times but I think I understand now. I have always loved and been fascinated by horses even though I am little scared of them & have never had my picture taken next to them on my few visits to Horseguards. Brave enough to have a picture taken with John though who is a total gent 😂 thank you again ♥️

@paulinemegson8519 Thank you for the explanation. I did 🤔 wonder but never thought to ask. I noted the other day on the parade ground one horse decided it was not happy. Bucking and rearing, the trooper put his sword away and took control using both sets of reins. Rebellious behavior soon under control, horse then sulked 😂

Hello from Australia. Always enjoy your videos on YT. Just one small question, having put up with chemical sensitivity for many years, how does the strong mix of perfumes affect the horses? 😄🇦🇺
