We need to enact a law that sends a criminal to ONE YEAR IN PRISON for every mile actively running from the police. An additional 5 years added to that sentence for racing through a school zone, or near a loaded school bus. If anyone (including passengers in the suspects vehicle) are injured, a charge of first degree assault should be included. This includes anyone injured by the police while actively chasing the suspect. If anyone (including passengers in the suspects vehicle) are killed, the suspect should be charged with first degree murder. My parents grew up in NY City during the 30s and 40s and they said this stuff NEVER used to happen. If you crossed a cop you would get your teeth knocked in. If you talked back to a cop in the street you would surely get smacked in the face and their parents would approve. It just wasn't done. If you had done something especially heinous like hurt an old person or raped someone the cops would let the father or some other aggrieved family member have a few minutes with the perpetrator in a jail cell. They said they don't recall of ever hearing of a cop being killed on duty when they were kids and they grew up in Spanish Harlem which was a brutally tough neighborhood. It was brutally tough because no one carried guns. Every street beef was settled with fists and even little guys knew how to fight. My father grew up on the street but eventually became a bank vice president. On a trip to Spain with my wife and my parents when he was 70 years old I witnessed him duke it out with three pickpockets in the streets of Madrid and he scared them all away. He was a small guy not more than 5 foot 4 yet he took on three 20 something punks in the street. The point is that he had pride and would never let himself fall into that criminal nonsense OR fight cops. As a teenager I was told by my parents that if I ever got in trouble with the cops to NEVER talk back and ALWAYS do exactly like I was told... AND if I ever did get in that type of trouble to not bother coming home because my father would surely cripple me. There were a few times when I could have done sone stupid things as a teen but I just didn't have the nerve after having been brought up like that.

Why are not more people calling out this abuse and waste of resources, while the rest of us may have needs of their services???
