Thank you for this. I have a GED and am 30. I've been considering a job as a police officer. I worked at the same place for 5 years. I'm in a leadership position with knowledge in I.T. work and even helped emergency Managment response teams & the U.S. Coast Guard set up IT & phone lines for hurricane harvey, at my job. man I'm about to test for the second time for my local sheriff's department and am really trying to get in cause the job would be an opportunity I've been looking for for a while and it would be great for my family. I have a good work history for my age but was coming up short with my sort of "strategy" for furthering my hiring process, like my first job was bagging groceries and I got it by staying persistent with the managers till they hired me, basically what I'm saying is you've given me a lot of things to think about to improve my chances of getting the job and I want to thank you. if I don't get called in for an interview after this testing round I'm just gonna go again and again till I'm part of the department.

+Anton Burkovetskiy college is great if you can afford it. If you can't, military will get you into 75% of the same places. Some pd's give preference to military vets both at hiring and promotions. So, take that into account as well. Research the types of places you would like to work first.

Anton Burkovetskiy Hey bud, for what its worth, I went the military route and here's how it played out for me. I joined the Marine Corps Infantry after high school. After my four years was up, my plan was always to become a Louisiana State Trooper. BUT, I had such a blast in the Corps I wanted to do four more years, so I did. Now I'm out and in the hiring process for LSP, because fortunately for me they require either a bachelors or military service. But wait here's the bonus, I'm still going to get a degree, and it's going to be for FREE because of the G.I. Bill. In my case this worked out for me, because when I was younger there's now way I was going to sit in school for an additional four more years. lol I just wasn't ready for college, I couldn't stand school . Now that I'm older, I can't stop reading/educating myself. 1. Saw the world/4 deployments, and got paid to do a lot of cool shit with some of the best dudes on earth. 2. I still meet the requirements to become a Trooper. 3. After the academy, the US will pay me a salary to get a free education with the G.I. Bill Hope this helps some Good Luck

A CJ degree is awesome to have if you want to work Corrections or Detention, especially added to LEO experience, as a retirement plan. You can basically skip the ground floor entirely.

In Texas the TDCJ allows for replacement of experience with relevant education on applications for supervisor positions up to the Lieutenant level. Beyond that it only requires about 2 years at each level to advance. They also allow for "buying back" Law Enforcement and Military Service time as time toward retirement and/or initial advancement in pay scale at a set rate. As an example, a coworker of mine was in the Marines for 7 years and started out 6 months and two pay scale steps ahead of me starting at the same time. Not 100% what the Law Enforcement rate is. They also pay extra for active licensing and degrees of any kind. Obviously a former officer will, at least for a time, still have an active license.

+free field training As an 11 year Corrections Officer I can say that you sometimes feel like years of supervisory work makes many seem as if they don't know anything about the job anyway, but I digress. The point I was making was you could be an LT as soon as you left basic and supervisory training in about two months after the interview. In four-six years you could be a Major. It's mostly about experience in dealing with people and training in reacting to emergencies or training in multi-level, even multi-agency, responses. Not that you couldn't pick up a few courses on that topic for free from FEMA, but hey that's just me. If you spent 11 years as a Police Officer and weren't fired for drugs, family abuse, or a psychotic break then you're familiar with the kinds of communication and interactions they look for. Reading people, recognizing contraband and those that carry it, de-escalation, etc. De-escalation is the real key here. Much like private security a job in corrections centers around the exact opposite of what I've heard a number of Departments and Agencies like to teach. De-escalation instead of immediate escalation. Don't risk your life but talking someone down instead of punching them in the face is always preferable. With your experience, you'd be well familiar with the importance of that.

I did horrible in High School, got suspended for a semester. I went to Vincennes University, got a A.S. in Law Enforcement, got hired with the Indiana State Police as a dispatcher then went in the Army as military police. while in the Army you will get promoted and you will be a supervisor, you will be a patrol supervisor while conducting law enforcement. You can also get some cool certifications like radar, hgn, K-9, intoxilyzer use, baton, pepper spray, traffic accident investigation, less than lethal force etc. Applied to an agency in California my last year in the army and ended up getting hired. Even though my young years were bad in high school I made up for it by my accomplishments. WATCH YOU CREDIT. DO NOT GET BAD CREDIT. BAD CREDIT IS A BIG DQ IN MOST DEPARTMENTS.

I was MP in the AF and had just finished my first semester if college but have 2 years of credits from all the classes I had taken while in the military. During my "police" interview I was asked if the police chief was speeding through town would I write him a ticket. I asked him if the chief was responding to a situation that required him to speed and he said no. So I told I would have to write him a ticket and they never called me.

I'll be getting my associate's degree this summer in business administration (had to take 2 semesters of Accounting) and transferring to the local state university majoring in Management (which includes 2 semesters of business analysis, human resources mgmt, employment laws, etc.) and minoring in criminal justice. Already took 2 lower division criminal justice courses at community college to satisfy the prerequisite for taking up the CJ minor at university. I can tell you that the criminal justice majors at my community college are pretty dumb as a whole.

after working security for 2 years, I ended up going to work for my mother..she's the boss and house manager at the house when works for. she works for a company called rescare..they take care of disabled and mentally challanged and etc people. and I have been volunteering for a few years working there for free taking care of them. I drive a van to transport them to work, the doctor, appointments etc, I help with showers and their hygiene. they wash their own butts&nuts lol but we have to watch and help so they dont fall in the shower. but I also pass meds..controlled substances and none, and also do cooking and help teach them communications like to talk, sign language, etc. I love it and helping them and been finishing up with school. ive had several different agencies county&city offer me a job or position in law enforcement. but wanted to finish my schooling and get more life experience. I started working at age 15 staining wood and siding and hanging it on buildings and doing concrete at care free days in when dave carter ran it. I worked there from 15-17 then worked at big o tires as a tire tech, flat fixer, and bay guy, I also worked as a driver and laborer for a scrap yard for several years, then lastly worked for abm security company, then universal security.

Sharky Barks don’t fret too fast with that one, a lot of departments (especially in Cali) place value in a college degree and actually require a minimum amount of college credits and/or military experience. I’m about to get my MS (and have many PO’s in my program hoping to move up) and almost finished with the process of getting hired on as a police recruit. In fact the department I’m going for actively seeks out recruits at colleges, and has a minimum requirement of at least 60 college credits just to apply. They told me with my degree my pay would significantly increase within a couple of years to the cap of around 150k, which is a much slower process to reach without the education. Let alone the fact if you ever want to transfer over to a state or federal agencies, which many require at least a Bachelor’s degree. So it ultimately means you just have to shop around for an agency, because not all are created equal.

Don't Forget You can also be a Deputy Sheriff/State trooper. That's the same as a cop. Also one question. If you had to pick Between Glock 22 or Glock 21 for a Duty weapon. Which one would you choose and why?

+Nelson Green well, depending on the area being a deputy sheriff isn't always the same. Many deputy sheriff's don't have police powers. But, for my purposes on the channel when I say "cop" or "police" I mean all cops. From the railroad police and private police on up.

+Nelson Green In some areas Sheriffs deputies are not all cops who arrest people. In large metro areas, Cook county IL for instance, there are a large number of deputy sheriff's who are correctional officers or court security only. They have never nor will ever work the street, carry guns, ect. (Not that there is anything wrong with that as long as they are happy) In Cook county they have what is called the "sheriff's police" they work strictly on the road and most were never in corrections or court security. You can also find people toting around "sheriff's deputy" badges with other titles on them as well like pshycologist or administrators that don't have the statutory power of arrest. There is a vast array of diffrent types of law enforcement out there and not all are what you would traditionally call "police"

+emileo agustin yes and no. Everyone takes a test. In some places it is a civil service test in others it is LE specific. After that there is an oral interview and a battery of medical/physical /psyc exams. Then a list is compiled and hiring is done off the list. (this can all vary depending on state/agency). You then get a job and any specialist positions you get after that are at the need of the agency and YOU have to prove that you are the best person for that job. While time in service is not the only qualifier for positions like k-9 you should not expect to be put in such positions before you have 3-5 years on. Chances are you will stay a patrolman full time for at the very least 3 years, even with prior experience as a k-9 handler.

What is it you think 4 years of college is going to give a person that 4 years of military experience won't. I dont see a nexus between a cop not understanding that kneeling on someone's neck is a bad idea and sitting in a classroom learning about the history of law enforcement. Now, maybe a bit of human anatomy should be thrown into training at some level, that I would agree with. Too many guys are manipulating people's bodies without having a full enough understanding of how those bodies work.

I am also agreeing that police officers in USA should have at least a bachelor degree to become a police officer. So what are they learning as a military? Are they learning about the criminology and ethics, or is it more focused on handling weapon? I get frustrated seeing the cops handling peaceful demonstrating as a riot. You can clearly see their lack of education in handling situations. For example where I am from in Norway, you need to have a bachelor degree from the police academy to walk out as an officer. If the police doesn't meet the demonstrators with respect, why should they think they would get respect back? And who are they actually protecting?

@@melisabailey4778 I think the international media is glossing over the complexity of the situation here. These "protests" are devolving into riots and looting and people are being shot and killed by the "protesters". Many agencies here require a bachelors degree but there have been no studies showing any corrrrelationbbetween having a degree and being a good cop, and certainly none which suggest a degree makes you a moral person. On the contrary, military service on the US teaches discipline and how to work with people of a diverse background. Most soldiers rarely use weapons at all except to qualify once a year.

That was true up until the 90's during the major Clinton hiring boom. For example, for decades the Michigan State troopers only cared that you were male and over 6'0 tall and able to bench xxxlbs. When radios sucked and funding was low, backup was often 5+ mins away so you had to be able to go 2v1 for an extended time and survive. Now that backup is more readily available and police tech is better your tact and knowledge is a major factor in your hiring and especially promotion.

Im 20 and will be 21 in a few weeks, I didn't go to college, however I did graduate high school and recently took the deputy sheriffs exam for Albany NY back in November, got my test results back and now I am going through the process. I had a question for you I was curious about as well. On my left hand my index finger cant be bent the same as my other fingers due to an injury I acquired when I was younger involving a tree limb cutter..lol (basically got my finger cut off by accident) anyway my question is this..Will this be a problem for me becoming a LEO in respect to drawing my taser? My strong hand is my Right Hand and my weak hand hand is my Left Hand can I cross draw the taser with my dominate hand? or do you have to deploy the taser with your weak hand or whatever side it is holstered on? +Matt Ryan there are two schools of thought on taser location and drawing and I'm of the cross draw persuasion myself. I'm not sure if an inoperable weak hand index finger would be a disqualifier. I've never run into that before.

Well I can still pull a trigger with it, it just doesn't bend completely in unless assisted by my other finger or thumb. Ive adapted to it completely at this point I was just unsure as to if they would DQ me because of that. I assume they won't due to it being on my weak on and not on my dominate hand. Can you depoly your taser with your dominate hand? For example if It was positioned on my left hip can I draw it with my weak hand and then deploy it with my right hand once I quickly reposition it into my dominate hand? or do I have to deploy it with the same hand that I drew the taser with?

+Matt Ryan depends on agency policy. Some places require that the taser be used diffrently and kept on the belt in different positions from others. Some places have no rules and leave it up to the ofc to decide

In Missouri and some other states you can attend the police academy on your own dime. As a result unless you want to work in Kansas City, St Louis or for the highway patrol agencies will require you have completed the academy pre-hire. I moved from another state to MO to attend the academy and worked in a small agency to get experience before moving up. Many of the academies are run by colleges and give college credit for completing the program some as much as 30+ credits.

According to statistics only 1% of agencies (Federal, local, private) require a bachelors degree. That stat was reported in the 9th edition of Dempesy's an Introduction to Policing.

Because huge agencies and small agencies count as the same in that statistic, there are many thousands of very small agencies in the country. You have to look at the number of LE jobs that require a bachelor's to get the full picture. Remember that the people writing the books for CRJ classes are people who's economic welfare depends on more and more people going to college. It is in their best interest to convince you that you will be getting ahead by getting a BS or BA.

Not to debate, but I think while the statistic may be skewed in the sense that it looks at lot smaller than it is. Which was very obvious. Although I think the way it was presented in the text to someone who is going to school right now actually makes it harder to continue being a CRJ major. Because then you realize that most of the jobs targeted specifically to those with a degree are extremely competitive. Which to be analytical could mean that you have to reevaluate your personal path to either make you more competitive, or like you said give you a marketable skill outside of law enforcement. I actually originally stated that statistic to give anyone who reads it more perspective on how many opportunities they actually have! Thanks for the comment back by the way. Now I took my associates route, but I had my EMT for a while before I started college. My first real job at the age of 21 was in corrections. Before that I did construction, and had to have a big background check for it. My LT told me, that since I had my EMT, and worked corrections I could have started the academy earlier, I wish I had known this before going to college lol

Excellent advice! I retired five years ago from a career in federal law enforcement and have been teaching criminal justice courses at the university level. I always point out to students interested in a law enforcement career that they don't necessarily need a four year degree. It is increasingly a threshold requirement for the better paying big city jobs, and always has been for federal criminal investigators, but experience is equally important if not more so. Remarkably, most of my students seeking jobs in law enforcement don't want to leave home and thereby relegate themselves to fewer employment opportunities with smaller departments at lower pay. That's not a good situation given the average student loan debt after graduation. There are two areas where a criminal justice degree may be of some benefit. A CJ degree is helpful if you want to work in the broader field of criminal justice, but are not necessarily interested in police work. The system we worked in every day is taken for granted but appears like a labyrinth to outsiders. Understanding how the system is supposed to work takes a lot of the mystery out of learning how your jurisdiction functions once you become employed. Secondly, if you are dead-set on a law enforcement job, particularly at one of the more competitive agencies, your degree selection may fit into a progressive plan of education and work experience geared to obtain that end. That said, you should always have a Plan B and C ready just in case. My advice is to typically minor or double major in another field that provides options in case plan A fails. It's not inconceivable that even if you get that coveted job in law enforcement, that you will discover that you don't like the stress, hours, bosses, etc., and leave. I don't have any problem with your advice to major in something else altogether. I find that equally sound. You channel is very down to earth and full of practical advice. Keep up the good work!

In MN they require all over an A.S in whatever but they say specifically that if you have that then you can go right to the academy. If not then you do have to do another thing and then the academy.

I'm seriously considering pursuing a job as a city or country police officer after I retire with over 20yrs from the U.S. Navy (Intel specialty). I'll be about 45yrs old when I retire. I have a BA in History and Master's degree in National Security (not LE-related though). I'm still physically fit to do push-ups/situps/run with no medical waivers. Do I have a good chance or will departments consider me too old? What else can I do to make myself more valuable to a department looking to hire? P.S. Interested in State Police, but I've read and heard that they move/pcs just like in the military, which I don't want to do anymore; I'd like to buy a home and settle down in a community.

Here in Illinois you would be too old to start new. There are several agencies that don't care about your age and some (like many private railroad police agencies) that actually prefer older candidates. You will have to do a fair amount of research to figure it out but it is doable.

In my state (MI) our Criminal Justice BA's and AA's (from most schools) have police academies attached so you become certifiable as a peace officer in the state of Michigan upon graduation. So in my case, that's why I'm majoring in CJ.

Yep in Dallas, Mesquite, Richardson, and I believe a few others, unfortunately, says you need a minimum 45 semester hours or TCOLE cert or prior experience or prior military. It's my understanding I can't even get the TCOLE cert without going through a contracted provider via academy or other. I am not going back to college for two years. So, I figured to apply for dispatcher they give training to obtain tcole and I could apply for police officer after I get the certification. I would prefer to work in Dallas or Garland since they are always needing bodies, even before everything going on now. Any suggestions?
