Culture is as important as language hence in this video I am going to teach you Polish native-like conversational phrases straight from real life conversations and I will tell you in what manner Polish people communicate in, as I have heard and seen, somehow angry or anxious.
This video will help you navigate through such conversations, even if your Polish is basic. The phrases will help you understand what the conversation is about and the cultural translation will shed some light onto how to behave, react in a particular situation. Also, if you happen to have a Polish partner, you will be able to show your support for your partner and understand where they can be coming from in the conversations between you two.
What makes some family conversations tense is expectations. They are set early on, and I am sure they are set with love. Polish parents usually put them quite high, but they can be summed up in five steps
1. Good education.
2. Solid partner
3. Reputable career
4. A kid before you're 30
5. A house
A couple of questions you may hear at a Polish table that relate to each of these pillars of a happy life.
A co będziesz potem robić? - How will you benefit from that in the future?
Jeszcze nie wiem, ale jestem pewna/jestem pewny, że coś wymyślę. - I am not sure, but I am sure I will figure something out.
A czy on/ona dobrze Cię traktuje? - Does he/she treat you right?
Tak, jestem szczęśliwa/jestem szczęśliwy. To miłe, że pytacie. - Yes, I am happy. That's kind of you to ask
Ale uczyć będziesz?! To nie kariera. - Are you going to be a teacher? That's not a career.
Uważam inaczej. I wierzę, że to dobry wybór, ale dzięki za troskę. - I think otherwise. I believe it to be a good choice, but thank you for your concern.
A kiedy wnuki? - When can we expect grandchildren?
Kiedy stwierdzimy, że chcemy i jesteśmy gotowi. - When we feel we're ready and we want to.
A po co wynajmować, lepiej chyba mieć swoje, co nie? - Why to rent, wouldn't it better to own your own place?
Na ten moment jest nam dobrze, tak jak jest. - For now, we're good.
Powodzenia!
