Beets and horseradish are a staple in our home . We call it "shawn" . I make it all year , but it is most important at Easter. I grow it and make it fresh . It is worth the pain . Best done outdoors !

Back in Easter, 1968, we invited my fiance over for Easter dinner. My Dad warned Rick that the horseradish (beet type) was super spicy and to be careful. My then husband to be responded that he LOVED horseradish and hadn't yet met one that was too spicy. My Dad just smiled!! Rick took a big bite of sausage with a lot of horseradish on it. All at once his face got red and he swallowed fast. He told my Dad that was some of the best horseradish he had ever had. After we got married later that year, he admitted to me that he had never had anything that hot! He said it took all his will power to keep from spitting it out. LOL! My Dad didn't make the horseradish, but used to buy it from a Polish restaurant in our neighborhood in Chicago called Slowik's. I tried Googling it and sadly it is no longer there. We will be married 52 yrs. this year, and my husband still comments about my family trying to kill him years ago!! LOL! I totally agree that most of the premade horseradish in the US is so mild that you can eat it by the spoonful right out of the jar. I make a recipe very similar to the beet one, except I use the premade horseradish instead of the root.

that's what happened to my hubby too, LOL. I'm Ukrainian, he's Scottish, Irish and he tried the horseradish on his own. OMG so funny but he loves borachky.

I just love your videos so much. Your recipes are bringing so much of my childhood memories back. I remember many of your recipes from when my mom made them and luckily I was always hanging out in the kitchen with her so that I learned. That was the best education ever although I didn’t realize it at the time. I must say that your recipes vary slightly and always for the better. You are an excellent chef. One day I will make your recipe for kielbasa. I’ve been making many of your recipes for my kids and they have been loving them.

I'm 62 yrs old and decided to look for some polish cooking and not only do I find your channel but as I'm playing catch-up I see this vid with the red horseradish. My father did this every Easter minus the sugar and he'd always make a jar for each of us siblings when we got older. He made mine extra spicy because that's what I like. What memories, and thanx to you. I'm a new subscriber also.

My father and dziadz dziadz use to make the beet type every year. They came from Poland to the states in the 40s. Poo men would cry making it

The first time I tasted horseradish sauce like the white one you made, was at an office Christmas party. I described the sensation in my sinus as "a flower blossoming inside my face". I don't know why, but that is what popped into my head.

This was fun to watch. Growing up my dad & I sat on the back stoop & grated the horseradish on a wire grater. It was a brutal delight. As I recall we just put vinegar or maybe gin/vodka in it. I want to try yours with the sour cream in it.

What I like about horseradish is that I can eat it without burning my stomach as both tomato and chili do severely. And as an aside I just love that beautiful FOXY APRON .

I love this!! I make this For Easter, and also during the year. It is my favorite. And I love when it clears my airways as well. The only deference is I use pickled beets.

You make it look so much easier than some others. I do know also if you substitute yogurt for the cream it will ferment and last a lot longer, just like the one with the beets if vinegar is used instead of water will last longer as well. Lemon is such a nice touch and preserves too. Thank you!

Beet horseradish is big here in NW PA. We get it every Easter, but love seeing the recipe so I can make my own. I do agree it can lose it's spiciness from store bought.

I'm making this tonight! Can't believe I never saw this video before. I will make it with the horseradish root I just dug up in my backyard and vinegar and salt. Next batch I will add beets like your's. Funny fact, Mace Pepper Spray is headquartered about 10 minutes from my home closer to downtown Cleveland, Ohio!

I wish I could buy horseradish roots like that! I just can't get them in the UK, and I want them for mixing with carrot. I remember my mother grating it when I was a child, she did it indoors, and stank the whole house, it really did have a kick to it; she just put it in vinegar. I think the cream takes away most of the kick, and the stuff in the shops, even the "hot" ones are so mild, I want to be able to make my own.
