My PolAm mom made these every year. We call them kolaczki. She filled them with prune or apricot. So good!

Yes, it's amazing how one dish can have about 5 names attached around here, depending on if you're polish, Lithuanian, Ukrainian, slavic, German, etc.

Growing up, mom would order the fillings at the Polish Bakery, poppy seed, nut, apricot, and licorice. I would go pick it all up with my Dad. Then that evening Mom, Grandmom, and my Aunt would be baking all evening for the holidays. Always loved these cookies.

First, thank you for the recipe and sharing how you made them. My mother made "Kefflee" every year, but the dough did not have cream cheese in it. I don't think we ever had cream cheese in the house, besides the pink container of whipped cream cheese, which was a great treat. I don't know what her recipe was, she never shared it with me, and my middle brother was the only one she let help her make them. I hope to give these a try this year to add to my cache of cookies that I give as gifts. Be safe and stay well. Catherine

She may have used sour cream as a version? Slightly different but very good. Cream cheese was a staple here. All cheese and dairy was, being on a dairy farm.

Such a delicate dainty cookie, I’m going to try but make a little bigger....thank you for the recipe! I’m a cookie person myself, it’s hard to stop eating any cookie for me. I made homemade ginger snaps last week, have to limit myself to only grabbing 6 to dip into my coffee. As for yours after I bake, I tend on sharing them with 2 elderly couples on the block that I pamper every year at Christmas, they’re going to love them!

Helga, these are my favorite cookies! My maternal great great grandparents come from Prague and this recipe was handed down to my mom. Last year I asked my mom for the recipe and to my dismay she lost it. I do know that when they rolled the dough out they rolled it out in sugar. My favorite are the apricot and nut ones. They also made popy seed ones. Thank you for this recipe. Happy Holidays! 🎅🤶☃️🎄
@PennsylvaniacookingBlogspot4 жыл бұрын
Wonderful! If you saw, I powder sugared the surface along with the flour before rolling out. Different families preferred different fillings, I think. I plan to do poppy seed roll so will get that there! Thank you!

What elegant, festive little cookies, great job Helga! I love the different colours from the different flavoured jams. I will definitely try these - I haven't seen a recipe like this here in the UK. LOL, mine ends in "SKY", so there ya go, lol. The hardest part is executing them thin and quickly so the pinched tops don't pop open when they bake and puff up a bit. But they are worth it and totally delicious, and taste just as good whether they stay closed or not, LOL.
