Polish scratches out of plexiglass using Novus 2 or Turtle Wax

Test to compare Turtle Wax against Novus 2. Turtle wax isn't really designed for this purpose but can be used in a pinch. Acrylic is sold under several brand names such as Plexiglas (often spelled plexiglass) Lucite, Perspex and others.

This helped me so much, I stupidly used a scratchy sponge to clean my car's speedometer plexi, and scratched it up. I used the Novus 2 and now it looks good as new. Thank you!

I think the difference is explained by the relative fineness of the compounds.Novus is probably just slightly finer in grit than the TW. If one could get something even finer than Novus it would work even better

You really need a orbital polisher with the same leverage to get a more accurate comparison, but, do appreciate the ruff attempt which gives a good idea. :)

Thanks! Where do you buy the Novus? Think this would work to remove swirl marks from my Goldwing windshield?

You would probably have to buy it online somewhere. Be sure to get Novus 2. It should work if the windshield doesn't have a hard coating on it. Clean any grit away first and use a damp cotton cloth with the Novus 2. Polish a small area on both sides to see if it clears up.

Better get a buffer. I tried it on mine and i could not do it by hand. be sure to get #1 and #2 and some carnauba wax or it will get hazy in a couple of weeks.

get the novus kit comes with 1,2 and 3 will get out virtually any scratch

Thanks a lot for this demo ! 👌🏼 does anybody know if that works on colored plexiglass as well ? By that I mean it is colored dark blue and maybe coated but I'm not sure.

Most colored plexi is colored thoughout the material so it is fine to polish. If it happens to be coated, polishing could possibly remove the coating.

Novus comes as a #1 #2 #3 you did not use the fine #1 Novus... that would finish the plastic like new after using the #2 Also water added to the mix will keep the polish from drying out on a larger job...

Wow! Gett'in the views! I think plexiglass is kind of one of those stolen brand names where lay folks use for any plastic replacement for glass. Which holds up better, to UV, Acrylic or ABS? Which is more brittle in the cold?

ABS is less brittle and normally opaque (although there are clear blends now) . Polycarbonate is the super tough clear plastic but it needs a coating to be UV resistant. It is a softer material and can scratch easier than acrylic (not to mention it is comparatively expensive). Acrylic wins for highest clarity and UV resistance. Acrylic and polycarbonate can have scratch resistant coatings but it makes it painfully expensive.

Truly removing scratches from acrylic/plex is difficult. It takes a long time, and many grades of grit materials. I have struggled greatly to polish a few acrylic aquariums, albeit with a lot of scratches and haze from microspic scratches, like at the sand level. I have purchased $100s of dollars of equipment: 10inch polisher, 6 inch 120v polisher, 5inch orbital sander, heavy duty auto polish machine (looks like a grinder), wool bonnets, fleece bonnets, cotton wheels 2in, 3 in, 6 inch....800grit sandpaper, 1200, 1500, 2000, 3000, 5000, up to 10000grit w/d paper...All kinds of coarse/Med/fine polish chemicals. Most of this youcan buy at autoparts store or walmatr etc. Afters hours of this, such as 20minutes on ONE only ONE 6INCH spot, it is not perfectly polished after all that. You will need a lot of patience, or have low standards of what "finished" means.

@@johnbishop1914 I too used an orbital polisher, looks like a grinder, and a 6" palm polisher from harbor freight, etc. Most products were good, many brands, I used 400 to 10,000 grit wet dry paper a few brands, the 1,2,3 levels of liquid compound, many brands, even some of the soft "sticks" of compound used on metal polishing wheels.
