Rocko's Modern Life premiered an episode this month with featured a predominant Trans character. This has inspired a discussion of politics in children's cartoons, and if there is room for the subject. Which is why I have decided to make this video discussing just that on the latest episode of Quinton Reviews!

As a trans woman, Rachel Bighead’s appearance meant a lot to me. I never actually watched Rocko’s Modern Life as a kid, it was just a tad before my nicktoons days, but I was a kid once, and I grew up watching cartoons. It was my first exposure to art and it was how I first discovered my love of writing. And yet all portrayals of boys who ever did anything feminine was played for laughs. So I never really strayed much out of the masculine bubble…and that went on for a really long time. Secretly I had been trained to other queer amab people, but at the time I didn’t realize it. And so much of this could’ve been solved if one of those “durr trans women aren’t real, men shouldn’t wear dresses” jokes was replaced by a meaningful trans character. Maybe it wouldn’t have taken puberty hitting me like a truck for me to suddenly realize my gender. And most importantly, it’d just make me feel comfortable. So much of my life is spent fearing ostracization because I’m trans…sometimes i just want to be seen in something as basic as kid’s programming because…it means I’m seen as normal enough to be acceptable to show to children. And you have no idea how much more important that is for a child who feels this hurt, and doesn’t understand it, and decides that they can’t be that because it’s considered so unacceptable. That’s why it’s important. It’s why kids shows have morals…to instill what we want others to practice. And I can’t wait until showing kindness to people like me is no longer seen as a controversial thing to teach children.

The reboot really meant a lot to a lot of trans people. I'm trans, and growing up the only concept of transness I had was as a joke, because in media and from other people irl that was literally the only way I had seen or heard it portrayed. So when I felt dysphoria I had no concept of what it was feeling because transness wasn't a valid concept in my mind. Really fucked me up. I am SO goddamn happy for gen z. This reminds me of a Malcolm in the Middle episode that really made me think when watching it. To make the description brief, Dewey is accidentally transferred into the class for kids with mental disabilities. One of the things said is that at the beginning of the episode all he wants to do is get out of the class with the "weirdos", but he slowly starts to get along with them and understand them. But the most thought provoking thing was that it tuns out all the kids do all day every day is make bracelets that they then put in a box at the front of the room. It's revealed that this guise of teaching them "life skills" was actually so that the schools could sell the bracelets at a nearby gas station to make money. It really made me think about the "special" kids at my school who would get teachers coffee and food to learn "life skills" but there was always an air about it that they were treated lesser that others.
@GamblinLucario
@GamblinLucario 5 жыл бұрын
I've seen first hand how special education has been used by bad teachers as an easy paycheck. I may not have been "special" myself but the treatment I've seen through my sister who happens to be, is absolutely appalling. Her teachers made no effort to teach her correct information or provide the speech classes she desperately needed saying she was "at grade level" as an excuse. On the flip side, the school system will bend over backwards for kids in advanced programs or classes because it makes the schools look good. There's definitely some screwy stuff happening there and it almost seems like once a child is in special ed, they want to keep them there as long as physically possible.
@CoalDiamondandhisawesomeness
@CoalDiamondandhisawesomeness 5 жыл бұрын
@@GamblinLucario It's interesting to hear your perspective. Something else to note of the episode, is that the room for the "special" kids is a stuffy room in the basement. It really gives the vibe that schools just shove them down there and ignore them for as long as possible.
@GamblinLucario
@GamblinLucario 5 жыл бұрын
@@CoalDiamondandhisawesomeness Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if some schools actually did that, the truth can certainly be stranger than fiction. There's plenty of other shows with depictions of a special ed classroom and I've yet to see one that was ever positive or strayed too far from the one in Malcolm in the Middle. Growing up, I always saw them as a joke and would laugh it off as if it was only absurdist humor that could never happen. Now I'm not so certain and they always haunt the back of my mind as if that may have been the intention of the show runners.

The antagonist of the story is a capitalist who wants to either eat the smurfs (to consume them) or literally turn them into gold and become rich.

Then the muslim family also later got their house vandalized by racists and islamaphobes, but then ended off that scene with an important message about anti-bigotry. One of my favorite examples of this in video games comes from Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Whenever you go to buy new clothes in that game, they will mention whether it's a boy's item, a girl's item, or unisex, but still allow you to wear it anyway without any fuss. Villagers will compliment your outfit if you choose to wear one the opposite of the player character's gender, some of them even mentioning they wish they were as brave as the player to wear what makes them happy. The approach is a little flawed, but I'm just floored that a game so many children played was out there telling them that girls could have facial hair and "boy" hairstyles and that boys could wear dresses or cute hair clips if they wanted to after barely seeing anything else like it growing up.

Rocko was smart about it at the very least, showing that a person’s happiness (Rachel’s euphoria upon embracing her true gender) is more important than anyone’s silly opinion on the matter, and the episode directly confronts Ed with this truth. I think the point of the fairly odd parents episode is "Bigotry isn't actually based on things that matters, humans will use any small different to hate others". It's kinda undermined by the fact that everyone is supposed to be the same, so no one could be "greyer and blobbier"
@dirgenmeister4018
@dirgenmeister4018 5 жыл бұрын
I think that there's still a level of truth to that. Like, if we were to just talk about race, there's a completely arbitrary distinction between what's considered white and not white, since human skin tones have a massive variance in actual color (there's a rly good website that attaches specific hex values to a wide variety of people's skin tones and it rly shows how varied it is). To us, the distinction between white and minority seems somewhat obvious, because we're informed by a long history of people trying to enforce those ideas, but to an outside observer those qualities would seem completely irrelevant and meaningless, because there aren't clean sub-categories of skin tones. In a certain way, to claim that skin color means anything is almost as dumb as claiming you are greyer and blobbier.
@dirgenmeister4018
@dirgenmeister4018 5 жыл бұрын
Also there is one specific difference between the dentist and Timmy: the dentist has the ball. Because he has the ball, he is in a position where he can enforce arbitrary hierarchy, because he needs some level of justification as to why he deserves it. The fact that he's "greyer and blobbier" is a figment of his imagination, but it's a figment he needs to justify his theft of Timmy's possessions.

You mention video games briefly at the end, and as a big SMB fan, can I mention Vivian from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door? And that Luigi is canonically LGBT, as of 2003? He blatantly had a crush on a boy, Prince Peasley, in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. Maybe he's bi, maybe he ends up with a girl, but he's still LGBT. One of the most iconic characters in gaming is one of us. And to expand on Vivian, for those unaware, she is canonically a transgirl. She is a partner, too, one of the good guys. Her sister, Beldam, is a villain; and misgendering Vivi is depicted as one of her villainous traits. A Mario game depicted transphobia as villainous. This was sadly censored in English translations, but that's out of the creator's hands.

But its perfectly fine to be viewed by children who can also get something out of it. I like the trend that we can make media for both children and adults and it doesnt have to be one or the other

That's really the galling thing, how little it takes to qualify as "woke" or "political:" all you have to do is have a protagonist who isn't a cishet White Male and you're done. You don't need to do anything else, because there are only two genders, Male and Political, and two races, White and Political.

What's self-unaware is the fact that SJWs try to take over entertainment, businesses, education and science and that people calling out these easily-triggered types are deemed the same for calling them out.

Around 5-10% of dislikes don't mean anything and happen for lots of reasons, from bots, to people seeing embedded or recommended videos, to people who just can't click the right button. Nobody should really care about it.

6:19 I think there's a bigger, more important point to make here. The original bigotry was ALSO invented. It never made sense he doesn't deserve his ball because he has bad teeth. That was just as invented as the one in the alternate universe.
