I'm guessing the explanation for why gays weren't allowed was cut for time, but I actually know the answer to this! During this period it was feared that, due to society's current attitudes, gay people were more prone to blackmail by Soviet intelligence, since most of them had to keep their sexuality secret on account of intense homophobia. This attitude actually caused a "Lavender Scare" during the fifties and sixties, in the US and Canada. Gay or bi men and women working in the government who had this fact discovered about themselves were fired explicitly because of their orientation, in order to prevent Soviet blackmail. Yes, this did create a catch-22 where the exact situation they didn't want was brought about by their own actions, and no, no one implementing these policies ever realized it. So yeah, no surprise they weren't let onto the top-secret air base, the CIA was worried they'd be blackmailed into leaking intelligence, never mind the fact that threatening expulsion made it easier for them to be blackmailed in order to keep their secret.

I half remember seeing a show that addressed this. Apparently in Canada if you were up for a sensitive job in an embassy or whatever you were hooked up to a machine and watched some porn - the purpose being to see if the candidate preferred straight or gay, hence exposing their sexuality if they lied

It was usually related to dehydration. When at higher altitudes, your normal body response is to breath faster, even when supplied oxygen. Coupled with wearing that heavy ass suit and the inability to consume proper amounts of water due to weight limits, you'd probably suffer the effects of dehydration within hours. An 8 hour flight with no water would be the same as walking at a fairly brisk speed for 8 hours straight and not consuming any water. Although dehydration does cause excess urinating and potentially diarrhea, so yes they would become dehydrated and begin filling their suit with sweat, poo, and urine. They probably smelt AWFUL after a single flight.

I have an uncle who was in the Air Force. My dad asked him jokingly once about Area 51, and my uncle just responded, "We don't call it that." I do have a feeling he didn't mention it was Groom Lake because, for one, this was before people were completely sure where it was, and also that my dad's family is from the Mojave and would know where that is rather easily. Also, my biggest thought behind Area 51 is that there's nothing there. It's so widely known to be the secret government site, backed up by heavy security and secrecy. I've always thought that it could easily be a smokescreen, and that the juicy secrets are at some other base nobody pays any mind, because they just focus on Groom Lake.

Honestly, it's not that surprising because aliens in the Doctor Who universe can look like anything, so why not go to Nevada and save a generic dollar-store Area 51 alien? What's really surprising, though, is why he's shocked at all since the in-universe organization "Torchwood" was introduced fairly early on in this Doctor's run as a group that steals alien technology for military gain. So, based on when this came out, this is literally like the Doctor being shocked that humans are stealing alien tech AGAIN just because it's in another part of the world. Heck, even worse, because Torchwood's something made up for the show, it's able to go all-out with the science fiction stuff, which means it puts this dollar-store alien kidnapping to shame with what it's got going on. Yeah, you got a single Grey, that's pretty good... have you seen our gigantic tower that literally rips dimensions apart and houses an infinitely-large object containing tens of millions of the most deadly alien race in the universe??? And don't even get me started on the Zargons....

They’d originally been scheduled for 18 months of animation but then as they were informed (probably due to Tennant leaving) they’d only have six. Six Months. Seven episodes equating 42 minutes of animation with several several different locations with a limited team and tech? in Six Months. Taking THAT into consideration the animation goes from “bleh this sucks” to “holy crap not that bad.”

Philippe Bruneau This is likely true for similar reasons as the actual one. That said, the real reason you couldn’t be gay was that it made for too volatile and too easily obtained material for kompromat. Even if your commanding officers could give a shit less what you did with your bits during off hours, they certainly didn’t want the other guys to be able to hold getting outed over your head during this *significantly* less tolerant era.

If I were to make a story about area 51 I’d try to find a way to combine both the Anti-Communist Espionage aspects of Area 51, the Alien Pop Culture Conspiracy theories, and the sheer farcical nature of all of it. Maybe having the Army convinced the Soviets are working with space aliens and they’re holding the galactic equivalent to a mail man hostage because of some aside comments on the Soviet Union. Maybe having some psychotic General Ripper character interrogating the Alien. Insisting that the Alien give the Us what ever technology they gave the Soviets and the alien just pleading that doesn’t know what he’s talking about he just said that he like Karl Marx’s hair cut.

@holographicbunny3297

Lugo They would likely have something akin to fingers, just as they would likely have something akin to eyes; convergent evolution and all that. Some kind of manipulatory appendage or even subappendage (such as a finger) would seem to be a near prerequisite for a species that saw fit to develop machine-level technology.
@Lugodu87
@Lugodu87 4 жыл бұрын
@@holographicbunny3297 I don't know, this seems like a really human centered vision. Even if we're talking only about human or above intelligent life forms, we have no idea of how different they could be from us. They could use other things than fingers to grab, like some kind of mouth at the end of arms, suckers like octopuses, or things we can't even imagine. Maybe they wouldn't need for a practical grab at all on their planet. Maybe they would be more nest-based lifeformes like ants or bees (which I could totally see evolving to be more intelligent than humans). It's probable they could be marine animals too. Or maybe a kind of bacterial mess that can modify its structure and shapeshift into anything. Maybe they wouldn't have to use for eyes, maybe they'd have a sonar like bats or dolphins, or extremely powerfull smell like dogs. I could also see the most intelligent life form in the universe being a gigantesque plant or fungus expanding on the totally of a planet's surface and creating some sort of giant neural network. And I'm not even talking of different forms of life that might not be DNA-based or even carbon-based. With my Earth-based imagination I can already think of many intelligent forms of life that would look nothing like humans. With life evolving on a totally different planet, we can't even fathom how different it might be from what we know.

The U2 is a weird plane. Apparently one of the things that made it so hard to fly was that the wings were very thin and at high altitude, there was a very narrow range of attitudes the plane could fly at. If you put it outside that envelope the airflow over the wing becomes supersonic and causes the plane to stall.

I actually did a school report on the history of area 51 in the early 2000s. Was able to do a pretty good job getting things accurate. Talk about the U-2, why groom lake was chosen, an incident where the entire base had to be temporarily evacuated due to fallout from a nuke test going in a direction the meteorologists had not predicted (right into the base), testing of a mig-21 that previously defected to Israel and other foreign aircraft, how that partly led to the idea of the base testing alien craft since technically they are foreign aircraft, Sr-71 and a-12 development, stealth aircraft development, and the base's current activity. I used an automatically scripted tour in Google earth for my visuals (like a slideshow, but moving from location to location in Google earth instead of slide to slide in PowerPoint).
