One night in Paris | French pension riots documentary

Paris is burning. Weekly protest marches draw millions of demonstrators.
General strikes halt transport, bin collection, education. The streets of the French capital are piled high with rubbish - until protesters set the refuse alight.
There are violent street clashes, between the police, anti-fascists and the far right. In one night nearly 500 people were arrested.
It started with pension reform, but is spiralling into something much bigger. Provoking questions about democracy, police brutality, and the very nature of what it means to be French.

Well I think the French pension system is set up differently than ours. If I'm correct, the French have to work at least 41 years in order to get a full state pension, whereas the British only need to work 35 years. So, I'm pretty sure we are actually in a better place than France which is why we don't full on riot.

This was really really well done! So many "news" outlets resort to shock value in their thumbnails and titles, "blood and fire in the streets of P" for example. Thank you for showing the nuanced reality of these protests. 99% regular working people, marching for their rights. The editing and filming was on point, choice of title cards was great and showed respect for our culture. I am tired of people arguing that "well, the French has it too good, because it's 65/67/70/whatever in such and such country". If that's OK with you, we're fine, but we in France don't buy that. We believe there is enough riches created within the economical system as it works today to fund a state pension that allows people, if so they wish, to retire with full benefits at 62. And indeed, we have cultural inclination to be weary of ruling classes, be they aristocratic as in the past, or economic as of today. So we do fight for our rights, and we do fight hard. People in France get that we're all pensioners eventually. Cuts in pensions now, will affect younger people disproportionately more by the time they reach retirement age. If pensions fail to keep up with inflation, every year that follows sees pensions fall further and further. Why should we just accept Government increasing retirement ages? The more we allow rich politicians to force working people to work longer and longer, they will just come back with more and more austerity? If we just accept their rationale, ordinary people's quality of life just continues to decline. They tell us the Country cannot afford existing retirement ages, but always find money to bail out the bankers. Enough of this hypocrisy and double standards. Why does the second wealthiest country in Europe, have the lowest state pensions in Western Europe?

I think the French pension system is set up differently than ours. If I'm correct, the French have to work at least 41 years in order to get a full state pension, whereas the British only need to work 35 years. So, I'm pretty sure we are actually in a better place than France which is why we don't full on riot.

Germany is at 67 years of pension but they give 35 real years when we at 62 years must give 41 trimestres so it's more than German. Also if you only started to work at 30 years old cause you had a long student life, you must work more than 62 years old then.

It's 43 years now! E.g., this new bill won't change anything for my personal case: I started to work at the "late" age of 23, so I have to work to 66 regardless, if I want to leave with a full rate pension. The ones who are getting owned big time are the people who started early.
