Can people stop saying Sunak and Hunt brought inflation down. It’s a shame that this is being discussed on a recap. The independent BoE brought inflation down by increasing interest rates. All the government had to do was sensible policy to make sure markets are stable i.e don’t announce unfunded tax cuts or government spending out of nowhere. I say this as an economist. Sunak’s legacy shouldn’t be that he brought down inflation.

It's true that monetary policy is handled by the old lady but in Britain in particular (i.e. we're an island that imports lots of stuff) the government has more of a role that just "making sure markets are stable". Doing nothing can also take a certain amount of discipline...
