Hit the nail on the head about the generational issue. I’m 45 and thought I was up with it but now I have a 15 years old I realise my understanding of their online life isn’t anywhere near what it is in reality. Traditional media is dead and the winners of the new world will be the political parties that realise this. Most are run by people even older than me who don’t even have teenage kids to show them the issue. They’re living in a old school bubble and don’t even know it

To be fair, Labour MPs had no mechanism for actually removing Corbyn from office, he eventually chose to stand down. Same with Miliband, Brown, and Blair. If Labour had a binding no-confidence process like the Tories, Corbyn would've been forced to stand down in 2016. Starmer will only be gone when he chooses to, unless a rule change comes in which I can't see Starmer doing this early in his tenure.
@Ray_Beige5 күн бұрын
@LabradorIndependent Labour Together, Morgan McSweeney, the party mechanics of the Labour Right hated Corbyn for attempting to move the party away from the centrist neoliberal status quo towards something more like the social democracy of postwar Labour. This faction (within a party notorious for absolutely toxic factionalism) opportunistically hopped on the media-created Antisemitism scandal in order to oust him. They installed Keir Starmer by disguising him as a successor and friend of the Corbynites before doing a complete volte face and morphing him into an heir to Blair. Now some might think that was necessary to win the 2024 election (it wasn’t) and others might openly hate Corbyn and prefer the Labour Right, but what NO-one can argue is that it wasn’t a coup and that Labour didn’t commit Regicide (of a leader though not a PM).

Ditching Leveson 2 was the price they paid for Murdoch support at the election, something which will now come back to bite them
@KevinHorrox4 күн бұрын
Part of Leveson's suggestions to be implemented was "the names or personal details of those who have been arrested or suspected of a crime should not be released to the press or the public." On the subject of the Southport stabbings, this policy allowed Andrew Tate - who isn't even in the country - and Nigel Farage to spread misinformation online that the offender was a boat crossing immigrant. Information that was one of the catalysts of the Summer mini riots. It's a mighty fine line between holding the alleged criminals accountable and allowing them to get a free and fair trial, and allowing reporting on incidents that could have a degree of public interest. Not only that, but some crimes where there is an alleged culprit such as in SA and underage SA, the public mind is made up almost instantly, regardless of the outcome of trial - leading to people being wrongfully vilified in society on occasion. The prevalence of information spread, certainly when not all facts are available, can also be seen as a problem. I don't know if I could draw that line. However, the misinformation spread needs to be curtailed, while at the same time, respectfully being allowed to hide the identity of criminals (and possibly victims) until the fair trial has been concluded.

All the old people who no longer contribute to society are still dictating how we live. We need houses, houses, houses! HOUSES!!!!! We need houses! That is what everyone under 50 is saying, and has been saying for years! WE NEED A HOME WE CAN AFFORD!!!!!!! If you are a boomer you cannot relate, you bought cheap and watched your investment explode in value. So you get old bricklayers living next to investment bankers in the same terraced houses in parts of London. Where do the current bricklayers live? Can they afford a family? Who will replace the current generation if nobody can afford a family because houses are so expensive? The issue is houses. The government as the people paid to govern should be building house everywhere, even if some whinging boomers don't want their view ruined by the sight of British people and their families.

To talk about Trump without looking at the alternative is a problem. To talk about Farage going direct during a conversation doing exactly the same thing is a problem. To talk about Trump and a wave of money with the suggestion that was a factor in the US elections when the Democrats outspent them 3:1 is a problem. Trump did not use money to win did he. The mainstream media no longer can be relied on for any kind of truth and the other truh is that the public have realised there is no real difference between the main Polictal parties, that is the point. As for Brexit being bad, I was remain like many, but look closley at Europe, Germany is on its knees and will take a decsade to recover minimum. The EU is in real trouble, no mention of that is niave. I'm a huge fan of the show but this conversation is notjing more than a nostagic look back at how things were, maybe its not even that. The last PJ thing I saw was an interview with Ian Hislop whicb was much much better. You are both in a dangerous echo chamber, hopefully you will find your way out. Lewis is by far the best political mind of this age. I hope he sticks around, he'll be up there the greats like Attenborough and Dimbleby.

Goodall is an excellent journalist. Dugmore from Joe is an interesting one too, but the other's in Joe are giggling children.

I adore the NewsAgent’s podcast. However they often do only have one pov of wealthy professionals of the political industry. Which is fine was I listen to more than one to get different perspectives. Moreover I must disagree about the dismissal of politicians and other public servants getting very expensive ‘handouts’ particularly if they are regular and verge on bribery. Being gifted a suit for presenting purposes is one thing, maybe a dinner out or free flight but if it is large there will be a conflict of interest

Listen to the wheezing to that man. He wants to slow down when he talks, I could hear the whistle! 😬

The newsagents is normally a decent podcast but they do tend to like to pick odd topics and try to shape political thought.
