It's not surprising that hardly any of them showed up. My question is why is Jacob Reese smog? Is it comic relief is it just a distraction so that you don't pay attention to what's being said because I couldn't help but notice he was on his phone while she was making her oration. @@rogerdogger6969 : Well, being on your phone, or appearing to be otherwise disinterested in proceedings, is his way of showing, “contempt,” without being, “controversial,” toward what he must think of as his Nemesis. He wants to be PM and still thinks that’s a possibility (in his warped imaginings in which the Ghost of Victorian Rent Boys Past get handed jobs like that out of sheer entitlement) and he knows that Penny Mordant is the most likely candidate for that job. Not that it will shake out like that at all, because Sunack will cling to his position at the top of the greasy pole until his party is landslided out of power altogether. Mordant will end up as leader of the opposition (or perhaps even the third party, if this tactical voting campaign I keep hearing about gets enough traction?) and she’s far too competent to be shaken by a d*ck like him. I’ve been asking myself, “Why is he a thing?” in modern politics at all in this day and age, for years now? And I can only conclude that it’s something to with the British love of, “eccentricity,” and, “personalities,” but we’ve all seen what real world harm THAT can do to a country’s prospects, so I also seriously HOPE we’ve learned our lesson!? He is HOSTING political talk shows on television, FFS! That’s supposed to be ILLEGAL for MP’s! He should be next on this committee’s list!

It's the job of the Leader of the House, not the PM, to move this kind of motion. There only needs to be one front bench speaker to move any motion or respond to questions on any given item of business. The lack of front benchers - or relatively few number of MPs on one side or another - doesn't mean they aren't all going to vote. In Hansard, one can often see that although televised proceedings show few in the chamber, when matters come to a division there are suddenly a lot of names on the lists: MPs don't have to attend a debate in order to vote on whatever matter arises from it.

I’ve been Labour every election since I was 19 in 1983 but the sniping and knee jerk cynicism on this thread I don’t think is fair. I loathe the front bench almost to a man and woman but I actually think Penny Mordaunt is half decent and I don’t dismiss her presentation here as the abject self seeking cynical posturing some are saying it is. Starmer dodged a bullet when the idiots voted for Truss/Sunak not her because not only is she sane, she’s articulate and fearless. If this was a person employed in any normal job, they would not be subjected to a vote to see if they could still have a key to the social club, after found lying to thier boss and then bullying the people charged with find out the truth. Parliament needs reorganisation and updating in line with modern working practices. Less likely to have so many Johnsons,Priti Patel and Suella Bravermen. Liz Truss would be facing a prison sentence for misappropriation of company funds. Why are politicians allowed to perform worse than any other employed person, but never face the same punishments.

@@tomspyro5795 yes but the Tory party won't be taken out by a left wing party. If it happens it'll be by a more Extreme right wing party. Which I'll be honest, screw that, the Tories are terrible but they're better than UKIP or the BNP. The reason the liberals lost their position was because their supporters naturally drifted to the left and towards labour. I think it's equally likely that labour get eventually destroyed and replaced by other parties such as the greens. Our 2 main broad church parties don't really represent wider public opinion which is increasingly extreme. I saw somewhere (I'm sorry I cannot remember where) that as much as 30% of the population would vote green every election if the voting system wasn't so terrible at penalising third parties. The same is true for conservatives that lost 13% of the vote to UKIP in 2015.

Absolutely appalling to see no other front bench Tory members in the house of Commons - another example of their cowardice to face up to what has been going on. All credit to Penny Mordaunt though, who spoke very well I thought. I was very pleased to hear her say it is not just about the disrespect shown to the House of Commons and all MP's but also the huge disrespect shown to rest of the population of the United Kingdom. I think the vote should have been mandatory for all MP's and how they voted been made public. They are supposed to represent their constituents and I'd be very surprised if many decent citizens would not agree with the committee findings. If they vote not to accept the findings they should be tasked to provide a written explanation of this to their constituents. The same would apply if they chose to abstain, which is tantamount to saying they disagree with the findings of the enquiry but are too concerned about their own future to "rock the boat".

It's interesting that the leader of the house sits alone with mostly empty seats around her and said all the right things without her close colleague supporting her. In front of her are almost full seats occupied by people supporting her! Then there were JRM and co sitting at the far end. No doubt disagreeing with every word she said. Will they vote against?

The Tory front bench is probably empty for fear of their own involvement being brought up. Many will forget that Sunak was also present at the party amongst many others. They broke the law and the ministeral code (their own internal laws). Doing so in any other work place could warrant immediate dismissal. There should be no opportunity for them to return as an MP under a different party. This is a privileged position they should be seen to setting the example. This is true for anyone in this house.
