Him and Private Eye are the few journalists left who can be bothered to dig up an actual story. The rest of the media are too obsessed with whether Kate likes Meaghan or some other celeb gossip that's easy to print. Who do you blame most, the people that consume the gossip media or the hacks that feed it? I first heard the PO scandal on an episode of HIGNFY in 2020? so years late, I immediately subscribed to Private Eye.

Private Eye is one of the most sued publications in Britain. Private Eye also has one of the highest success rates at defeating the lawsuits against it. That right there should tell you they are hitting a nerve and often they are doing that by saying uncomfortable truths.

Private Eye has a terrible record of defending against lawsuits. They've lost almost all of them because libel law is (or was) so broken in this country. It's pretty much guilty until proven innocent. With that in mind, that they very often are proven correct after being fined in court is probably the best example of just how messed up that system is. Look at how they lost to Robert Maxwell, or the whole case with Peter Sutcliffe's wife. I'm very grateful they keep doing what they do despite coming under heavy fire from solicitors. They're the last voice of uncorrupted, true rebellion.

Priti Patel's declaration on national TV that she wouldn't care if innocent people were erroneously killed under a UK capital punishment regime is one of my earliest "political memories" and has been forever burnt into my memory. They give people who feel victimised someone to blame, someone to fear, and then say they'll tak away that fear. "Mexicans are taking your jobs, we'll build a wall." The reason Ian Hislop is so great, is that he really doesn’t care if he ever gets invited back on these shows again; he’s not trying to sell anything, or be Mr. Popular, and that frees him up to say what he really feels, and unequivocally point out when politicians, journalists, presenters etc, are lying, or just being thick as mince. If more journalists didn’t care about access, & were willing to be unpopular, in their search for the truth, it would make it a lot harder for politicians to get away with being such corrupt, lying arseholes; it’s because of the sycophantic client journalists, who avoid asking the difficult questions because they enjoy hobnobbing with the rich and powerful, that allow politicians to do basically whatever they want, and be pretty sure that they’ll probably get away with it. If the majority of journalists were more like Ian Hislop is here in these clips, we might have a functioning press that actually works on behalf of the people…if only.

unfortunately our free press has many influencers with vested interests. True, we don't (appear to) have outright censorship, but the proprietors certainly have influence. The Murdoch group in particular has done a very great deal to manipulate a particular section of the populace to assist their views (and wallets), but it is not limited to them.

Yes, but..... Private Eye is a minuscule publication with a very limited reach. It's great that it exists, but it also shines a light on the absolute pathetic nature of what passes for a "free press" in the UK. The glory days of investigative journalism are long gone; the press is part of the problem now rather than part of the solution.

It's a shame that 'journalists' these days are afraid to ask the tough questions or to think for themselves. Ian's a shining example of actually listening to what's being said and forming a constructive opinion on that. You see the (lack of) thought process going through younger journalists' heads when someone says anything, they barely acknowledge what has been said, even if it's something worth pushing further on, they're only interested in reading through their pre-determined questions and getting out of there. Be more like Ian, please

Ian was absolutely right on that last clip... A company that marketed a failed bond scheme that lost savers £236m has been funding an MP's private salary. Johnny Mercer receives £85,000 from Crucial Academy, a company ultimately funded by Surge Financial Limited. Surge Financial Limited took 25% commission for marketing bonds by London Capital and Finance (LCF), which is now in administration. Mr Mercer - who is facing calls from investors to quit as an MP - said he had done nothing wrong. The Conservative MP for Plymouth Moor View is a non-executive director of Crucial Academy, which trains military veterans and aims to find them employment. Mr Mercer, himself a former Army officer, is contracted to work 20 hours per month, a rate of more than £350 per hour. The basic annual salary for an MP is £79,468, and they also receive expenses to cover the costs of running an office. According to Mr Mercer's register of members' interests, his only other regular income is the £85,000 per year from Crucial Academy.

Despite Hislop thinking the system is ludicrous, it's still very telling that he hasn't been made Sir Ian Hislop all these years. This man is more than a national treasure, and deserves a knighthood more than just about anyone who already has one. He contributes more to the national discourse and defends our values better than any grandstanding politician ever has, and has more integrity in his llittle finger than any of them have, too. Let's have it: Sir Ian. Sir Ian, Sir Ian (did that last bit remind anyone of SIR IAN McKellan in Extras?)
