He essentially admitted to leaving a poisoned chalice by saying "we told Labour it would be impossible to avoid raising taxes". The sheer audacity after minutes earlier stating that labour are lying if they say the need to raise taxes is due to the state in which the Tories handed over the public finances. If they knew it would be unavoidable, then they had to know the dire state they were leaving. The two positions are incompatible.

As prime minister he could be confident that any incoming government would need to, unavoidably, and so could assuredly state it. The Tories borrowed as money was cheap but when it stops the problems surface. 14 years of austerity and yes Brexit have done serious harm, as our growth runs its arse along the floor. 251 Tory Seats lost at the GE for a reason. Sunak is furious as the Budget has out of need to stop our decline ends centuries old tax concessions like non-doms and APR and BPR that give up to 100% relief from IHT. What we had was for example your Wetherspoons and supermarkets giving part time contracts that kept employers paying precious little NIC leaving Mr & Mrs Taxpayer subsidies in the form of UC to so many. Now they must make their belated contribution to the Exchequer.

The OBR says the growth boost will only last two years but predict it will still be higher than it is now, even when it declines. I think Rishi made some good points, and it looks like politics is fundamentally broken as the government's policies are going to hurt hard-working people, but the Tories are not necessarily better. The taxes are not going to hurt the rich as much; it's going to mean fewer people are going to be hired, and companies will embrace automation more and diversify their assets to be tax-efficient. There should have been a lot more investment into innovation.

the reason why the country has not done well over the years is down to a total lack of manufacturing in the UK. That is where you get growth from, making and selling things. There were dozens of British car manufacturers decades ago, now we no longer have a single British car maker. Manufacturing was killed by greedy trade union parasites.

From an economist: OBR has downgraded forecast of household income growth due in part to a "substantial part of the employer NICs increase being passed onto real wages". To be clear govt HAD to increase income tax, NI or VAT. But to suggest this doesn't impact people's incomes is ludicrous
