When listening to music you haven't heard before, _always_ start with the studio version. If you wish, you can then go and listen to live versions afterwards, but always start with the version arranged and mixed in the way the band intended it to be ideally presented. There _are_ some fantastic live versions of songs out there, but the vast majority of live recordings are inferior to the studio versions, and even most of the really good live performances are better appreciated when you know the band and the song beforehand.

New subscriber. This video brought me here. i'm a 67 year old grandma that loves rock, metal etc. Been a rocker since the 60's starting with Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and the like. Love this song and the vocals of David Draiman. My grandkids (teens & young adults) laugh when they here me listening to this music. I guess they think I should be listening to the BeeGees. lol. Should have watched the official video.

Sounds of silence was a surprise for most Dusturbed fans, but as you can hear, he has always been a VERY powerful singer, he has a degree in political science and philosophy, so we expect him to have depth in his music. This style may not be everyone's cup of tea, but the entire band is amazingly artistic

He's singing about the damage done by parental abuse. I, for one, felt this song from the first time I heard it; even before I caught all the lyrics. Radio plays an edited version without the "No Mommy!" section.
@SuzanneDeniseB9 ай бұрын
Sighs. Yep. I can relate unfortunately. ❤
@Z-one10008 ай бұрын
Song has nothing to do with parental abuse. Mommy is a symbolism for "Mother Society" or the "Mother Culture" that punishes those who do not conform to it. David Draiman himself even explained this. But at the end of the day, you can interpret a song however you want. Soo...go ham, I guess.

The crazy thing about Disturbed is really that he sounds the same live as on a record for the most part. This one is a little off in parts, but still unreal for being live. Such a vocal talent, fire reaction as always my man.
@marcelfriedrich2863 Жыл бұрын
I think it's because they don't make the same mistake many bands do and that is to turn the instruments to loud, so that you don't/barely understand what the leadsinger is singing.

I think there are specific bands that sound better live, or at least put on a show that blows the album out of the water (Rammstein, I'm looking in your direction,) but in general the studio version is better unless you're actually there.

I first heard the band and this song in 1999 or 2000 in a friend's car. Since then I've also had this LP and use it to teach my twelve-year-old daughter early on in music. Because if she hears hip-hop, she'll go to the children's home, I told her. 😆

Re: the lyrics. This is a tough but great song in the sense that it captures the torment of a child abused by their mother. I lived this as a child and the lyrics in this song reflect what a child can slip into as a result of child abuse. Gratefully, I was able to simply put that abuse behind as soon as I left my abusive home understanding the abuse wasn't because I was a rotten child but my parent was rotten in their behavior.

I saw David in an interview and they asked him about still performing this and some other old songs. He said he would also perform this and any other songs he values his fans. He also said sometimes he thinks “ wow did I really need to say something that many times 😂 I’m sure a lot of artists who have been around for a long time feel that way about something they made.
