Much of what the Beasties do is an homage to the very early days of NY Hip Hop. So in the early days the DJ was the star, the MCs (they were not even yet Emcees) were just the garnish. This is a shout out to that. They are stationary in the studio like all the other instruments until the DJ comes in, when he starts they animate and when he is finished they go back to being stationary like every other instrument, the DJ is done using them.

Hip Hop originated in the Bronx, New York. Kool Herc is the godfather of scratching records over beats and rhyming. Afrika Bambatta and Grandmaster Flash were also in that early group. This takes me back to my childhood in Brooklyn. DJ's used to battle outside and rhyme over break beats. Jazzy Jeff is indeed one of the greatest DJ's ever but if you talk to him, he was inspired by many, many New York DJ's that came before him. The Beastie Boys were one of the pioneers of hip hop. This music came from the streets and pure talent. MC's and a DJ. Period. Best rhymes win. None of that auto-tuned mess on the radio right now.

Nope… it’s all done with moving the record back and forth at variable speeds controlled by hand, while cutting up the sounds with the mixer in the process. That means the motor does not drive the record. It’s all done by hand; no Wah Pedal or other effects whatsoever.

My brother, he scratches that entire track from one record. There is no track, he creates it and never loops to a second track or uses a second record. He scratches the whole thing in one take, from one record, on one table. He is the instrument. This man is a master. There is a list that can, but he could back when VERY few could. My hubby was in San Antone for AF basic and I was in Orlando (Navy), I went home recorded some mastermixes from the radio that weekend, went to dig in the crates (I used to DJ on the weekends on bases with a DJ from Queensbridge that was getting stationed in San Diego with me), stopped by to see him graduate, blessed him with some sounds from home inc. License to Ill cassette and kept it moving to Diego, he went to Travis AFB. He was so happy. People don't realize how much music was exchanged in the military. Dudes that were straight country got to hear Slave and all kinds of music in the dorms, just like brothers that only knew R&B/Hip Hop were exposed to AC/DC and Metallica.

You mentioned DJ Jazzy Jeff and scratching. I'm in my late 50's and I can remember Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five using scratching or scrubbing as some people called it back in the late 70's. Herbie Hancock used a DJ to do some scratching on "Rockit" in 1983. I believe he won a grammy for the single and video of the year at the MTV awards.

If memory serves me correctly, I think Mix Master Mike was the first to hook up a wah-wah pedal to his turntables to create his unique sound. He has an incredible amount of skill and creativity with those turntables. Truly a Master of his craft. Love your reaction to this one. Keep the videos coming! ✌️

You really need to listen to their album Paul's Boutique. That album was revolutionary with the amount of samples in it. It really is a masterpiece. Also, listen to The Sounds From Way Out. It's an instrumental album and shows their skills playing instruments. Such a talented group of individuals on so many levels.

One of the parts that you probably didn't notice is when the dj went in the building he went down about 3 stories. In otherwords, he went 'underground' which was a huge thing back in the day. underground rap was for the serious hip hop head. No one wanted to be commercial or pop cause that didn't get you respect in the hip hop community.

Discovered it by accident too. He was practicing in his bedroom and his mother was banging on the door. His hand was moving the record as he called back to her and he heard this weird sound in his headphones. The rest is history.
