Brilliant video, def the most helpful one I have come across for MDS. How did you get on with navigation? At any stage did you feel you had to use your compass, or was it marked (how was it marked?) all the way?
@ultrarunneradam4 жыл бұрын
A few moments when I felt what now but there was always someone or a marker to follow. Check out my MDS episode 5 at end and you see bright pink markers. Also you can see you get some clear views in front and behind due to desert terrain but not always. I worried about this before I went but it was fine during the race! Have you signed up?

Great video, really helpful and insightful. Well done on the finish too. I'm progressing from marathons to ultras from next year, having started this year, so wondering how long it took you before you felt confident of attempting it? And how did you prepare for the environment you ran in as I'm not sure Surrey is quite the same :-) I'm keen to do the MdeS and the CCC too in the future (2-3 years time).
@ultrarunneradam5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Neil and great your looking at ultra's - its a good quesiton (loads to say) about the transition and given me an idea for a future vlog!! Depending on how hard you run your marathons and at what pace, they can be far more painful and for me much harder to recover from. An ultra can be run/walked at a sensible pace - you just need the endurance in the legs and above the mindset to complete. I went and did 60k in the Surrey Hills as starter and did ok about 6 1/2 hrs - you just slow the pace down and keep onto you nutrition. MDS is a running race so great or marathoners - its quite flat. I did loads of speed work and back to back runs. CCC well that I didnt prepare for - I need to look at that as the climbs are insane - the best prep is to go out there as youve got the altitude - my vlog will show the sufferring I went through! Hope thats helps - I'll try and do a vlog soon about this though! Good luck and and any q's just fire away.

Running the MDS March 2022 and torn between taking my phone or not and also using a smaller iPod rather than my phone for music. Was it worth bringing yours ?

Hi George. I took a nano iPod for listening at night - fell asleep with it on first night and flattened battery and forgot my charging cable. For night worth it as a lot of snoring but a few days in and you get used to sleeping and i slept very well. Phone is only good for pictures which is worth it unless your going for a 6.5 kg bag. Do you think genetics play a major role here? Some are not used/designed to deserts.
@ultrarunneradam Жыл бұрын
The human genetics of a runner participating in the Marathon des Sables (MDS) ultra race can play a role in their performance and endurance capabilities. Genetic factors can influence various aspects of running, including aerobic capacity, muscle fiber composition, and injury susceptibility. Aerobic capacity, or the ability to utilize oxygen during exercise, is influenced by genetic factors. Some individuals may have a higher natural aerobic capacity, which can contribute to better endurance performance in long-distance races like the MDS. So yes genetics play a major role.

Great video, I'm just wondering abut feet swelling. Some people say buy 2 sizes bigger. How were your feet ? Do most people buy 2 sizes bigger ? Any advice would be great. Its my biggest concern at the moment.
@ultrarunneradam5 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike thanks glad you liked it! For me my feet never really swelled to change shoe size. 2 sizes up no way - too risky as this will cause blisters. At the end of each outing I raised my legs to drain lactic and perhaps reduce any swelling. Massage feet. Clean. Relax. A few years back I ran for 30hrs - feet swelled loads but it ever effected my shoe fit. Do your feet swell after a long run? Are you planning to run it or walk it? Yes a major concern is foot care but follow the advice and you'll will be fine - clean tape & cream every morning - your feet will harden during training. Love your feet. I also moisturised each night about 3 weeks leading up to race to keep feet supple. Hope that helps - anymore Q's let me know. Good luck!

@@ultrarunneradam Thanks for the reply, i've done a lot of miles and i've never had a problem with swelling. I thought it might be a heat thing but even so I thought 2 sizes up sounded a bit much. Glad to have found your channel and look forward to catching up on your other videos on training.
