I feel so fortunate to have found this channel it's a perfect intersection between my profession and hobbies. I'll be trying Polycam this weekend when I have some free time. Excellent work, excellent information, delivered and edited well.. keep it up!

@@robnjk yeah, hi! I work at "the leading aerial imagery GIS mapping company in North America" which probably could be named but idk what I'm allowed to share lol.. we use photogrammetry and lidar combined with "traditional" surveying to create highly accurate maps out of aerial imagery. I work on our "white glove" product, our most accurate and visually-corrected imagery. My degree is in studio art (photography and ceramic sculpture) though not GIS - hobbies are content creation, video games, streaming. I've only just built my first PC about 4-6 weeks ago, for video editing specifically, and started learning blender about that long ago too lol. Loving your content so far! Amazing production quality and delivery. You're doing great work and very inspirational to someone like me just starting out in this similar creator space.

@@robnjk I have pictures that I have done, and have gotten a number of requests to turn these items into cosplay props from the pictures. But to start, i need to scan other props and body shapes to make custom items fit to that person.

very cool! I used Meshroom few times and I have several projects coming up. Would you say Polycam wound work for me? My projects at the moment are about my 1972 Camaro. I want to model parts for it, starting from smaller parts by scanning spots of the car, all the way to modelling and 3d printing the whole dashboard.. would it work? I have removed the current broken dashboard and want to get good 3d model of the area that I can use in VR to sculpt new dashboard ..The ones I got with Meshroom are not too good quality and what I saw from your video, the measurement option looks super useful!
@robnjk Жыл бұрын
Oh that sounds like a fascination project. It might require more fine details that Polycam isn’t too good at producing. I think you could definitely use it to scan the dashboard so that you have an approximation to work with, especially if you’re working in VR. You can output the model at a pretty low resolution that shouldn’t be too intensive to run in VR
@jannekallio5047 Жыл бұрын
@@robnjk yeah, it does not have to be too clean, as long as the dimensions match and I can sculpt the parts to fit.. went crazy and got RTX 4090 so it should run :) .. I give a try and let you know!

For reserve engiinering (as a hobbist) should I buy a 3d scanner like revopoint or similar? Or should I buy a Ipad pro 11 and use its lidar as a scanner? And also use it as a ipad too? Ty
@robnjk9 ай бұрын
I can’t speak to dedicated 3D scanners such as the one you mentioned because I’ve never used them, but I as a hobbyist would probably get an iPad Pro with LiDAR or even a used iPhone 12 Pro. I’m sure there are lots of benefits to using a dedicated scanner, I just can’t speak to it
@dreamhorizons8 ай бұрын
a pro scanner will be more "accurate", but you will need to learn a whole new way for scanning plus the native software's they use which to be honest they are not the best, I've found that yes ipad pro with poly cam will do the job pretty well and 90% for all your needs this will be more than enough

How do you capture the bottom of an object like a shoe? This is tough
@robnjk11 ай бұрын
Totally agree. The bottoms is super hard to capture and may come down to luck. If you’re able to hang the shoe from a string so you can get all around it, that may work. I got lucky shooting on a fully white backdrop and just turned the shoe to the side and Polycam was able to figure out the geometry

Hello Robin, Thank you very much for this great video. I have a question, I would appreciate it if you could help me. It is about what the process would be like to scan the bottom part of the sole of the sneaker. And then join it all in a single scan. Is it possible to scan the sneaker by turning it upside down and polycam will merge all the photos correctly? Tanks Pedro
@robnjk Жыл бұрын
Hey Pedro, this is possible! It works best if you’re using very even lighting and a plain background and might take some trial and error

From everything I’ve heard, you have to keep the object stationary in order to provide landmarks

The app isn’t garbage. You just use the tool incorrectly. Imagine calling a hammer garbage because you used it to unscrew something. 🤦🏻♀️
