Two Polyglots Speaking Five Languages in a video is a fun and entertaining thing! My half Japanese and half Turkish friend Ruri joined me in todays video. It was interesting to talk to someone who grew up with two different native languages because most of you know I also grew up with multiple languages. I used to speak German mainly but to my parents and grandparents I spoke Turkish. Besides Japanese and Turkish, Ruri also speaks German. In addition to that, I speak Spanish as well. And the both of us also speak English. So, that's 2 polyglots speaking 5 languages. Enjoy!
For the video on Ruri's channel: • My Turkish Friend...
Ruri's channel: / @ruriohama
If you want to learn Turkish and understand the Turkish language and its logic, you definitely need to watch this video till the end.
A lot of people around the world have been wanting to learn Turkish because of Turkish TV series. I also post about English, Spanish and German.
On my channel I am explaining the key elements of the structure of Turkish, how it is used and what the main similarities and differences between Turkish and English (and other European languages) are. If you are a beginner and want to start learning English and don't know where to start, I'll show how to learn Turkish fast by firstly understanding the language culture and structure. Since Turkish is an agglutinative language, people struggle thinking in Turkish and therefore might learn the grammar because it is rather easy but the usage in everyday conversation can be quite different.

I'm a native Spanish speaker (I'm from Spain!) and your accent is really impressive for someone who doesn't speak much Spanish! I've also been learning and using English my whole life and I work as an English teacher. (I dream in both English and Spanish) and I've been learning turkish for a bit less than a year now, I think it's a beautiful language! Amazing video by the way!!😁

Umarım ben de İspanyolca öğrenebilirim. Çok seviyorum 🥰 Türkçe için sana da başarılar diliyorum. Max Mulller: "Turkish is the result of the creative power of the Turkish langugae. It is the product of human intellect's awesome might. There is no other language which can be understood as easily, or enjoyed as much as Turkish." Paul Roux: "Turkish is a mathematical language full of thought and intellect." Moliere: "Turkish is language to be admired; you can express a great deal by a few words."

her dilin kendi eğlence ve enerji düzeyleri farklıdır, bunu bir yabancıyla konuştuğunda anlayabilirsin; sadece türkçeye bu şekilde yaklaşmış olman diğer dilleri yüksek seviyede konuşmuyor oluşun, gereksiz milliyetçilik yapıp diğer dilleri alttan küçük görmeye gerek yok

I am glad to hear that because i am learning Spanish from Latin America and understood everything he said. I thought because he was Turkish too and he had an accent, because whenever i hear Spanish from Spain, i cant hear the “s” sound and got confused, but he said all the “s” like Latin americans. So maybe most of Spanish people use “s” too?

When you spoke in Turkish I was so amazed. I thought it would sound like arabic but I got so mixed feelings while hearing you speak. The way you speaks sounds like a person from norway speaking norwiegan so as a swedish person it felt so weird not understanding what you said when you spoke in turkish. The language itself doesnt sound like norwiegan but the way you speak does. My god!

Thats a common mistake since most turks are muslim people think that the language must sound some kind of arabic while turkish is a language that originated in Siberia and much closer to languages like Japanese Korean Mongolian Finnish Hungarian etc. than Arabic 😀

Tu español es bastante bueno. Muy buena pronunciación y vocabulario. Felicidades. Saludos

Thank you for your great videos which are both very entertaining and educational at the same time.

I've been learning both Japanese and Turkish for quite some time now and what happens to me all the time is that I mix both languages a lot. For example, I had a really embarrassing moment when I ran into my Japanese teacher in town and when got asked how I was going to go back to my village, I responded: "Tabun basu de gideceğim" 🤦 My God, how embarrassed I was at that moment 😳

Ohh. In this memory your right use of "gideceğim" piqued my interest more. These suffix are hard stuff so you using it right is the part you should focus. Good job. By the way you were talking about a possibility right? Cause if I'm not wrong "Tabun" means probably in Japanese

turkish very different than english for sure. Actually I remember some students would struggle with turkish grammar in school, so many technicalities :) Im pretty sure its quite difficult for an english speaker. As a turk i havent found english that difficult though since its a widely used language you somehow get exposure to it online, one way or another. at least alphabet is mostly same, I cant imagine learning languages like japanese, chinese though

I personally think that if you speak latin, slavic (the ones the balkans speak), turkish, hungarian, greek, english and french, and make a mix between the words from every language mentioned above (like, you 'add a flavour' from every language into a word), you will just automatically, naturally speak romanian.

Hi, it is amazing how you two speak many languages. I know you were raised in Germany from Turkish parents, and that is why you speak both fluently, I assume you learned English in school, and now you say you learned Spanish as well, but in both you are also so fluent!! I think it is a great talent you have there. I am Spanish speaker from Peru now living for many years in Florida, USA. I am still amazed how the language works in the brain, my children speak English as their first language and even though I always speak Spanish, they have it as second, and sometimes I feel they are missing it. My nephew was born in Germany, mom is German and dad is my brother from Peru, he also speaks both, plus English very fluent from school.

Reşat ve Ruri, teşekkür ederim for this video. The notion of dreaming in different languages definitely resonates with my experiences. As a native speaker of only English, I sometimes find myself in dreams speaking or thinking relatively ineptly in the languages that acquired after English. For example, I once dreamed that I was speaking Kazakh with Kazakhs at a guesthouse in Almaty, but my jacket's zipper was zipped up so high in the dream that it was restraining my Adam's apple, so I was unable to articulate Kazakh's uvular phonemes /q/ and /ʁ/ -- represented as the letters қ (or q) and ғ (or ǵ), respectively. I awoke to realize that I no tightly zipped jacket was constricting my neck, but I was pulling the blankets so tightly across my neck in my sleep that it was inhibiting and stifling my breathing. I also experienced a surreal dream in French, wherein I dined at a restaurant called Sœur that served sour food and thought the restaurant's name meant "sour" until I awoke, at which point I instantly told myself, "Wait! 'Sœur' does not mean 'sour' in French; 'sœur' is the French word for 'sister.' The French word for 'sour' is actually 'aigre.' " I probably envisioned a restaurant offering sour food, imagined it being named "sour" in French, and incorrectly constructed a pidgin French word for "sour" by modifying the spelling of the English word "sour." I have also dreamed in fluent, flawless Spanish on numerous occasions. However, I would estimate that 90% of my dreams are in English, which is reflective of the fact that I speak mostly English.

yeah , I definitely agree with you. I have been learning English intensively for 5 months . Once my roommates noticed that I was talking in English while I was sleeping . It was a black eye . BTW I am proud of you , as a native speaker of Kazakh I must say that pronounciation of Kazakh is not an easy thing to do .
Colin Hirschberg
Colin Hirschberg Жыл бұрын
@Baglan Namet , сіздің жауабыңыз үшін көп рахмет сізге! ("Thank you so much for your reply!") I have to agree that Kazakh pronunciation is challenging. A candidate for the gnarliest and most confusable set of Kazakh words for any beginner, especially one who does not have a handle on all the vowel phonemes of Kazakh, would have to be кез ("time/instance/occurrence/timeframe"), көз ("eye"), күз ("autumn/fall"), қаз ("goose"), құс ("bird"), қыз ("girl"), and қыс ("winter"). Also, I forgot to mention another dream of mine, in which someone was speaking to me in a combination of Portuguese, Spanish, and French. The other person in this dream was warning me, "É possivel que llueva aujourd'hui." ("It is possible for it to rain today.") To translate this language-by-language, "É possivel" means "It is possible" in Portuguese, "que llueva" is Spanish for "that it rains" with the verb for "rain" conjugated in the subjunctive mood, and "aujourd'hui" is the French equivalent of "today." It is amusing how foreign languages sometimes seem to get distorted or intermixed in my dreams.

As to dreaming, I would say I dream in German since I was raised in Germany as a child of a Turkish family. The next challenges on my language learning journey are Italian and Spanish...

I'm also a polyglot. I'm from Azerbaijan, so my mother language is Azerbaijani. My second mother language is Turkish. Since I was three, i started watching Turkish cartoons, from Trt çocuk, or yumurcak tv, minika go and etc. I have been to Turkey for couple of times and I have got lots of friends from Turkey. Moving on with English. I went to an English school since first grade, till fifth grade. We used to talk in English with our friends and teachers. We had teachers and classmates from all over the world. After changing my school I started learning german at school. It was quite easy at first, but then I realized actually it was freaking hard. I'm still working on improving my German. The fifth language that I know is Russian. My dad graduated from russian school. My sisters are studying at Russian school, my mom knows russian fluently and we are using Russian language at home. The sixth, and probably the last ons is Spanish. I started learning Spanish during quarantine. I'm still learning. I can talk a little bit, like introducing myself, talking about my family or just general things. But of course using basic words. I also have amigo (friend) from Mexico. And yeess, that's it. I know, and learn 6 languages, Azerbaijani, Turkish, English, Russian, German and Spanish. Thank you for reading❣

Duudee me too lol! You see, I’m azerbaijanian too, firstly of course i learned turkish and i can speak fluently like i can write a book so. Then i improved my english and ofc my accent too. I have international friends too. Then i started to learn japanese an korean (which still learning) and then i added my list spanish too. Now I’m learning german cuz i want to continue my study in Germany. I’m a med student so. My mother speaks fluently in russian and i learned so much things from her. I really exited to know you all and I’m not alone *-*

@kamil berk You are totally right. As an Azerbaijani I can say that, 90 % of our people knows Turkish language. In my opinion, the reason is, since childhood we spent so much time watching Turkish cartoons. And while growing, or after being adult we watch Turkish movies and series. But for Turkish people, as they never hear Azerbaijani language, it is quite hard for them. There are some words that are similar to each other, but pronunciation is different. It is important to mention that, Azerbaijani language's vocabulary also has words from Russian language.

Çiçek Abdıyeva Hi Chichek. That's great. I think the best way for learning Russian is to speak. Speak with your mom, with your friends. Do not mind your accent. It will iprove by time. Try to read short Russian stories, fairy-tales and try to find friends who know Russian. It is quite easy to find friends who know Russian as their 2nd mother language in Azerbaijan. I hope you will be able to learn this language

Great video! I’m Turkish but I have lived in the Netherlands for 5 years so I speak Dutch, Turkish and English fluently. I also had the same situation about dreaming. In my childhood when I was living in the Netherland I was dreaming/thinking in Dutch but when I came to Turkey (even just for vacation) I started to think and dream in Turkish. Other than that, when I got used to speak English, I sometimes dreamt in English so it really changes according to your mood and-so... :)

I usually dream in Turkish, sometimes in english... but now and then i get words whispered, or i read them in the dream in other languages like Hebrew, Hindu, Norse... Except a bit of French, Japanese and Spanish, I did not attempt to learn any of these languages, so it strikes me when i hear tongues in my dream and as soon as i wake up i note them or search them over the web.

Loved this video. Living in Malta, a small country in the south of Italy I have grown up learning three languages. I only spoke Maltese at home, but we learn English at school from a very young age, since it is our second official language. Being so near to Italy, we also watch many Italian TV channels, especially when I was young. Hence I grew up listening to Italian everyday and I guess my Italian is much better than my English. I sometimes find myself thinking a lot in Italian, though I always dream in my native language, Maltese. I love languages so I also know Spanish quite well, and I almost forgot French now, unfortunately. And I am learning German and Turkish right now, so this video was very interesting for me. Only Japanese is missing. Maybe the next language lol!

Your video is very entertaining. You are both very likeable and charismatic. So I was thinking about the language in dreams. I have actually paid attention to that myself. I speak English and Spanish pretty much equally well, and even though Spanish is the language I grew up with, I learned English when i was very young and the fact that I have lived in the US longer than in Latin America, helped me improve my English, and sometimes I feel worsen my Spanish, making them the same. I also find myself speaking Spanglish often, living in So. Florida, well, it's a thing :) . Anyway, I have dreamt in English and Spanish, but I don't think simultaneously, and it happens randomly, I have no control, what you say about exposure might be accurate in some cases. Now I am learning Turkish, Italian and German all at the same time, being Turkish a brand new language and language structure for me. I have some knowledge of German, since it was my first language in pre-school in Germany, and even though I remember certain words and expressions, I lost the language by moving to S.America at a young age. In college I had to start all over again, however it became easy for me having the back ground and knowing English. As for Italian, I was exposed as a child, being my mom from Italy, and it has also become easier from knowing Spanish. Sooooo Turkish is "the odd man out". a language that is totally different than the anglo-germanic or the Romance-Latin I am more familiar with. I cannot imagine trying Japanese now, but I am getting really curious about it as I write. :D. By the way your spanish is really good, I was born in Spain, and despite my accent not being "Spaniard", I am very familiar with it, and Ruri, the words you said in Spanish are on point

I grew up in Iran in a Azerbaijani family who left the USSR in the 1930s. With my grandparents, we spoke Azeri Turkish and also some Russian (Russian was my grandparents' Geheimsprache, but we made sure we could understand them!), and we spoke Persian at home. I was educated at the Deutsche Botschaftsschule Teheran, and I have lived in the USA since I was a teenager. I think I dream in all these languages except for Russian, which is the one we spoke the least and also which I have forgotten the most. I think the dreams are very contextual and also related on how much I have been immersed in the language at the time. When I started at the German school, I didn't speak any German, but I remember that once I had a good grasp on the language, I began to dream in German, which was very exciting. A lot of my dreams are multilingual depending on who is speaking or in what context. I must say that since the majority of my life in conducted in English, that is the language that occurs most commonly in my dreams. But when I was in Germany a few months ago, I started dreaming in German again. And a few times, I caught myself speaking German to people without realizing it when I actually meant to speak Farsi or English.
