How in the heck does Nemesis outrank the Alien? The Alien is a one-shot kill, can't be affected by most weapons, the weapons that do affect it have barely any impact (it's not going to de-aggro you and barely gives you any time to breathe), and those weapons have really scarce ammo. The psychological horror of the abyss is punctuated by a gut-wrenching chase segment, where Kirby is pursued by a Lovecraftian toothy fish (quite possibly a metaphor for Kirby's gluttony) that takes up 1/4th of the whole screen! *Persistence(5):* Just when you think the Danglerfish is defeated, he appears once more in the same level! Jeff from Half-Life: Alyx is the newest edition to the terrifying unstoppable monster squad.
@StellaByLuna4 жыл бұрын
my ranking: Fear - 4-5 The whole chapter with Jeff was (for me at least) intensely stressful. Jeff himself is decently imposing, as a larger, smellier, and faster headcrab zombie. He can't see and is very predictable, so if he hung around for any longer than he did, the fear would probably start to wear off. But the main fear factor of Jeff comes from the environment. There are glass bottles everywhere which are really helpful, but also can shatter, attracting Jeff to your position. Also the encounters with Jeff are mostly in very close quarters, needing you to sneak past him mere feet apart. (I never got killed by Jeff but If I did, I think I would fear him less) Edit: also the whole thing is in VR so that amplifies the fear a bunch Danger - 2-3 You don't loose that much progress when killed by him, and he is super easy to control; even when he is running right at you, you aren't necessarily going to die as you can just throw a bottle behind him and he'll turn the other way, however the game does force you to get very close to him at times, and the has several glass bottle booby traps set up in lockers and such which can be pretty dangerous. Persistence - 4 Jeff is only in one chapter of the game, so that definitely strikes him down a bit, but throughout that chapter, he is omnipresent and usually an imminent threat. Even (and especially) when you can't see or hear him, he feels like a threat to your life. There is almost no point in the whole chapter where you feel safe from him, and no points where you feel safe while not being able to see him.

my addition to this list would be the waterwraith from pikmin 2. he's only in one dungeon but he was too much for me as a kid.

also, since you have to watch him MURDER YOUR PIKMIN it adss to the "what you have to lose" scare factor.

Daniel Hergert it’s also super satisfying when you realize the purple Pikmin are it’s weakness and now it’s running from you. I love that role reversal it’s so satisfying.

I like to imagine Pat pausing in the middle of a bunch of different and awkward situations to say hi to Charles when he walks up.

Maaaaan. I was hoping the whole time that haunting ground would get a mention. Damn I love that game.

Thank god you mentioned Alien; I’d forgotten the absolute horror of “sitting in place until threat leaves” the game.

I remember when I was a kid playing Sonic Adventure, I was so terrified of being chased by the robot in Amy's levels that I had my Dad play her whole storyline for me. Still hate enemies like that to this day

The Waterwraith from Pikmin 2! Danger: 5.5/5. You can somewhat fight back against most of the monsters here, by stunning them or slowing them down in some way. The Waterwraith is unstoppable, it chases you the entire time and your only option is to run. And you better run, since it instantly kills anything that it rolls over. And remember that this is Pikmin 2, the game that casually drops bombs from the sky onto you just because it can. You're running away from this unstoppable thing, while trying to avoid all of the other traps in the process. Fear: 4/5. It's some weird alien jelly frog thing. It doesn't match the appearance of anything else in the game so you can see that something is off about it right when you see it. It wouldn't get so many fear points on its own, but combined with the eerie music in the Submerged Castle and the Waterwraith's own strange music when its close give it a few extra points. Well, that and knowing that this is Pikmin 2 and instant death is everywhere. Persistence: 3/5. It only shows up in 1 cave in the game, the Submerged Castle. It doesn't even show up on the first floor at all, it's mostly there to set the mood. But after 5 minutes on the second floor, it drops down and it won't stop chasing you until you leave. There is another safe floor (like floor 5 or something), but even then it isn't entirely obvious that the floor is safe, and you'll probably end up rushing through it just in case if you don't know.
