In this tutorial I'll be showing you how to make a polymer clay bowl using leaves from your garden and a few alcohol inks.
I'll show you three different color variations using the same technique. You can come up with your own unique design to match the decor in your house. Try the project with different sizes and shapes of leaves, vary the background texture and change up the colors to create beautiful polymer clay bowls that you can use all around the house.

Loved your bowls. You are a very good teacher - I enjoy your tutorials. One hint on working with alcohol ink - I use a small cup paint pallet - this way the alcohol mixed with the ink is contained and it dries slower while you paint. The less surface area exposed the slower the evaporation. Even a shot glass or small jar lid would work. Thanks for sharing your talents with us.

If you drop your AI into a small paint palette tray (the kind with several round bowls) and add your alcohol to it, it won't dry up as quickly. Spreading it out on a flat surface guarantees fast drying.

Hi Samantha! The bowls are gorgeous!!! I love your teaching style too - you are very gifted! Quick question - I thought I had read somewhere that if you don’t seal alcohol inks that your piece will fade over time. Is that true? And if so, do you have any recommendations that would keep the sheen the same? Really, your work is stunning... Thanks!
@JessamaTutorials
@JessamaTutorials 6 жыл бұрын
I haven't found that the alcohol ink fades on my pieces when not sealed, but they don't go in the sunlight all that often. You could seal with renaissance wax and just give it a light buff with a piece of cloth. This will increase the shine just a bit. You could also use a matte sealer like liquitex matte varnish, but this will dull the color a little. It's up to you which would be best for you. :D

Jessama Tutorials I am thinking with larger pieces like this, that we could do sample tiles at the same time, with the colours used, bake them? Then use them to try different finishes anyone is thinking of using, simply to see if they are compatible and the projects aren't going to be damaged, if our judgement or knowledge of a sealing agent is off the mark.

This is brilliant! I was wondering if one wanted the color of the leaves more intense like it is before baking could you add more alcohol ink to it afterwards?
@JessamaTutorials

Yes. You could add more ink after baking. Alcohol ink pens work really well when used like that, but you can use bottled alcohol ink too.

Can you buy the alcohol inks online? You don't have to use the same ones I used in the tutorial. Can you get hold of alcohol ink pens? You could try food dye. It might work. I haven't tried that though so I'd test it before using them for a full blown project.

Can't you texture the bowl before adding the leaves? That seems like it would be quicker and easier.
@JessamaTutorials

I prefer not to as when pressing the leaves in it's really easy to squish the texture around the leaves. I find it safer to do it after putting the leaves in. That way you get a nice, clean edge.
