Not if you have not found an example similar to that yet. It is going to be a parabola and you will need to find the x intercepts for the distance the ball was thrown and the vertex for the maximum height. I don't remember what else was asked since my textbook is at school.

Finally i get it. This vid helped me so much. I missed my pre-calc class for a day and i had no clue on sketching polynomials stuff. Unfortunately, there are only 2 periods left until my unit test day, i was so worried, but not anymore. Searching for your vids is the best decision to deal with math. Thank you so much sir. THUMBS UP !
@profrobbob

Your examples are already in factored form so you can easily find the zeros or x-intercepts. Your zeros for the first example are 0 & 3 and for the second example 0 & -5. To finish you can multiply the factors together to make these look like the other problems you are used to and finish.

Being a matured, yet new college student and not finding math to be my best subject, I have struggled through 2 classes and on my second attempt at PreCal. It is very intimidating and overwhelming for me and I get freaked out by all the jargon thrown at me..however after missing a couple of critical classes I am determined to get through this, hopefully as painless as possible. I have been searching for a tutor that I can get to explain this to me rather than just throw it at me and take my money. I have spent all weekend trying to learn about polynomials, graphs etc etc. I just happened to see your videos and after watching them I feel a new calm coming over me. I really like the way you explain and show several examples and I can watch over and over until I can take all the necessary notes...lol Thank you for giving me hope that I will not let this class be the only one that will ruin my GPA and that I just might learn some of this stuff rather than muddling my way through. Keep up your enthusiasm...it's catching....

Then you need to solve it using the quadratic formula if it is a second degree, or by making a list of possible rational zeros and try finding one of the rational zeros (if there are any) with synthetic division working the polynomial down until it is a second degree. Are you sure you can't factor your problem by factor by grouping?

I son't have a video for just the intereidiate value theorem. I mention it in my videos about Rolle's Theorem. Are you just using it to determine if there is an x intercept in a closed interval? If so, if f(-5) and f(-4) have different signs there is an x intercept within that closed interval...if the answers have the same sign there is not. This is assuming your function is continuous on that closed interval. Your example is polynomial so it is continuous.
@profrobbob

I divided one (x+3) out of each term, not two of them. I have a video reviewing factoring by grouping if you would like to watch it. If you factor an x out of 2x+3xy it is not x^2(2+3y).

Then the graph passes through the origin:) Don't forget to check the multiplicity of each of those zeros to see if the graph touches there or passes through. I hope I answered your question.

Start finding your zeros by factoring by grouping. Factor an x^2 out of the first two terms and -4 out of the last two terms. Then finish your factoring by grouping getting (x^2-4)(x-2). x^2-4 can be factored again. Hope this helps you start your question.

Some Algebra 2 books don't include problems that are difficult enough to require this extra step, but my PreCalculus class does. If they give you all the zeros and the degree and that is it...no...but if you are given an extra point the graph goes through then yes. Have you watched "Linear Factorization Theorem"?

Wait, at 5:51 you talk about how you need Calculus and some more advanced techniques to find the vertex of a polynomial function. However can't you find the x coordinate for the vertex of a polynomial simply by using -b/2a, and then plugging that result back into the x values of the function to find the y coordinate of the vertex?

wouldn't the 0=4(x+2)(x-1)^2 continue to factor out as 0=4(x+2)(x-1)(x+1)? then the 1, and -1 would be powers of 1 and it would go through the points? just curious. Thanks! starts at 9:20

+Zachary Alberda (x-1)^2 is (x-1)(x-1). When you distribute these together the answer is x^2-2x+1. If you distribute (x-1)(x+1) you have x^2+1x-1x-1 or x^2-1. Since the two expanded answers are not equal you can see that (x-1)^2 does not factor to (x-1)(x+1). I hope I cleared up your confusion. Thank you for watching:)

The factor of (x+3) factors out and thus there is only one factor of (x+3). If you factor x out of 2xy+3x you get x(2y+3)...not x^2(2y+3) Thank you for watching. I hope this cleared up your question:)
