Vai is using a technique called 'joint shifting' that he invented. Vai started his career with Frank Zappa 🔥

The chords and melody line are persistent and demonstrate so many variations. Steve Vai is such a constantly innovating guitarist of over 40 years!

I think the video motif never gets talked about. Starting on the ground floor and wuth each break in the somg they go up a floor until they are on the roof and ascending to the level of Steve Vai. Very cool and subtle story telling.

That steve vai solo is so special. It's probably the coolest solo I've heard from him since The Love Of God.

Definitely need some Steve vai reactions. This is tame compared to a lot of his stuff… he is just such a tasteful player that he fits right in and never overplays even when he plays more notes than seems humanly possible. Recommendations: For the love of god Tender surrender Greenish Blues

This is actually only half true. From their talks, Tim actually had difficulties fitting in Steve's solo because he was trying out some new technique, that's why Steve's entry sounded a "bit off" in this. It did fit in in the end though, but it wasn't that simple.

@@nicoinformatics that’s not a new technique for Steve Vai. He invented it himself years ago and he calls it “Joint Shifting”. You can find tutorials on KZbin as he has done this technique in smaller doses since at least ‘Boy from Seattle’ released in 2001. He did it a lot more on his recent album and starts out his solo with it in Ego Death. Steve always sounds a bit off in general and not by accident, that’s what he does and it probably comes from his days with Zappa. He literally plays around on the guitar doing unconventional things and if he does something that sounds ‘different’ and cool he will save it and master it and put it on a record in time. This is why you always hear something new in every record but also why he is master of odd sounds on guitar. with this song specifically it’s ‘modern’ and therefore it really needed something ‘modern’ or ‘weird’ to fit in if that makes sense. Because the song is so unique. If he came in with a more commonly heard technique it would stand out as sounding dated. It wasn’t a new technique for him though, just a new ‘riff’ utilizing one of his signature moves that nobody else does. The weirdness also works out perfectly for that ‘drop’ with the muted arpeggio into the main solo. It creates tension and you wouldn’t get that contrast if it was normal playing and then a drop and then more normal playing. It’s all about building that tension and releasing it.

@@nicoinformatics the composition they did together and how the solo was placed was pretty awesome. I’m sure it was really weird even the timing was not standard in that build up and then it’s all easy flowing after the drop to release that pressure. The sign of a great solo. The whole composition is for sure very complex even though it’s a simple chord progression.

This is a new technique Steve Vai has developed recently. So I wouldn't say it's typical of his playing in the past. But he is known for weird choices musically. He started his career with Frank Zappa but you're probably too young to be familiar with him.

Yeah the way Steve's notes at the start of his solo seemed to be almost harmonizing....but then shifting? was really crazy to me. I've noticed Polyphia incorporates a bit of EDM style in their playing, and Steve seemed to follow with that. The 'drop' part of his solo where he hits the strings with the 3 high notes, for example. Really unique and amazing song here. I love it.l
