I’m about to find out for myself, assuming Sweetwater gets a new supply of the Explorer into its inventory soon. (As of May 2024, they were out of stock.)

Aftertouch is so useful because you don‘t need to stop playing with the left hand to operate the wheels. I have aftertouch usually routed to 3 - 6 parameters: vibrato / tremolo / pitch bend / cutoff / resonance / pan spread / waveform … Tip: if you change the cutoff on a LPF, also change the pan spread (available on the Hydrasynth, PolyBrute, most Sequential and many other synths): higher cutoff - wider pan spread and vice versa. Sounds always good to me. Or try to increase the resonance while decreasing the cutoff. Or combine both methods, which of course work for any controller, but as I said above …

The simplicity and articulation in your teaching makes me want to watch more of your videos. I’d pay to see a Hydrasynth teaching video. Great demos that really get the point across.

I'm addicted to aftertouch. My old Yamaha HS4 has aftertouch and I make use of it always. What's interesting on this organ, is that how aftertouch works, depends on the instrument selected. With some, only the top key (or single key) will respond, while with other instruments, AT works with a full cord.

It’s May 2024. With the generous assistance of Sweetwater sales representative Alex Rodriguez, I placed an order for this same synthesizer, Hydrosynth Explorer. When I do take delivery of it, one thing I’m going to see if it can do is transmit polyphonic aftertouch to my Oberheim Matrix 1000 module (also 6-note polyphonic). I know from having attached it to another synthesizer that Sweetwater sold me, the Yamaha S90XS, that the Matrix 1000 does receive channel aftertouch signals. I’d love to see if the Explorer’s aftertouch can be configured to control pitch in the module.

A very nice overview! I have a MIDI keyboard that can support both mono and poly aftertouch (CME Xkey Air 37) and I think it will meet my needs without having to buy an MPE keyboard too. I know MPE can achieve more nuanced expression, but poly aftertouch + mod wheel + pitch bend should be good enough.

Are there any 60/73/88 key midi keyboards with polyphonic aftertouch out there (controller or synth, I don't care)? 30+ years ago I used a Kurzweil 88-key controller with poly aftertouch on a project, but these days I don't see it. Is it more expensive to manufacture? Or is it harder to implement on a (semi) weighted keyboard? The Kurzweil (can't remember the model #) got sold without me knowing or I probably would have bought it 😞

You're propably thinking Kurzweil Midiboard. It's very unique as it actually contains real piano mechanism inside. Polyphonic aftertouch is not that expensive to create but in my experience it's more to do with pure will power and marketing of the companies. For example, if even £20,000 Schmidt keyboard doesn't have polyphonic aftertouch, what will then? Aftertouch is one of the most neglected performance features in modern keyboard industry. Now when we talk about poly-aftertouch... it's much much worse. Italian company Generalmusic in 1990's created their own poly-at keyboard simply by modding existing fatar keyboard. They used it in their pro workstation synths but also in two home keyboards!

@@panutalus Kurzweil Midiboard sounds familiar. I think its MSRP was $2,500 at the time, and the guy who bought it wanted to save $500 and go with the famous Yamaha 88-key controller (again I don't recall the model #) which I later purchased since the Kurzweil seemed to be unavailable at the time.) So then it doesn't sound like there are any poly at keyboards available right now at any price. I don't get that. While I appreciate channel aftertouch (again I don't recall the right terminology) where pressing down on one key causes all the keys current depressed to get the vibrato (or whatever is chosen), I can use the Mod wheel to do that. Oh well. Very disappointing. And thanks for responding!

Is there a device that can amplify an aftertouch signal which is too weak? The Efnote electric drumsets, for example, send their aftertouch signals at a velocity of 48, which is too low to trigger the cymbal choke in a plugin like Superior Drummer. Meaning, you can’t choke your drum cymbals with your hands. While Superior Drummer 3 has a feature called “lower choke threshold” to deal with this issue, Superior Drummer 2 has not. And I’d like to keep using my Superior Drummer 2 presets, which unfortunately can’t simply be opened in Superior Drummer 3. Also, even with “lower choke threshold” turned on in Superior Drummer 3, I can still only choke those cymbal sounds which belong to the same type of cymbal (such as crash bow and edge, or ride bell, ride bow, ride edge). If I put a crash on the bow and a splash or china on the edge, or a crash on the edge of the ride, I can only choke the bow sound, but not the edge sound. If I put the ride edge on the edge of the ride cymbal, meanwhile - or the crash edge and bow sound of the same cymbal onto edge and bow, respectively - all of these sounds can be choked. Really strange. This was never a problem with a Roland drumset, but with Efnote, it is.

When was polyphonic aftertouch invented? I literally couldn't find info anywhere, not even Wikipedia. Is it from the 80s or 90s? I thought it was a relatively new feature but I guess that may not be true? I heard people saying it's on 80s keyboards which I thought was weird.

so in conclusion if i dont have poly but want a specific note only to have the effect i have to record it seperately in a 2nd take and get the same result if its not for live purpose.

Hi Craig. Just remind yourself that no one is born knowing this stuff. It has all been arbitrarily created and named over time, with each feature being added on top of the previous one. My only advantage is that I was born before the first commercial synthesizers even existed, so I was able to learn about each newly added feature as they happened. Check out my free SYNTH CLIPS tutorial videos and you'll soon know almost everything I know: kzbin.info/aero/PLlczpwSXEOybYYaBCTcjxxKz1QmxytbIf -_Daniel_
