She Came In Through The Bathroom Window is THE song that made me want to play electric guitar. John was awesome with the rhythm and really drove the song. The lead guitar was just magical on this song. George was so perfect with his sense of timing of when to play what. His guitar parts never overshadowed the song, the guitar complemented the songs perfectly.

Brilliant songs and all that, but one of my favourite aspects of The Beatles, and Abbey Road is one of the best examples, is how they always got a great guitar tone and sound, it always seemed to be just right, tone, distortion, echo. Excellent job! Listening to the song like this for the first time, I am struck by the fact that with a bit less lead guitar this could have fit nicely on the American version of "Rubber Soul". The 12-string almost gives it a folk rock sound. Not as recorded, of course, but i now see that it could have been. Thanks for showing this.

Love this - and nailed all the details, as always. The 12-string is bang-on. One Beatles writer (MacDonald?) guessed the big D-A-E strums by John were influenced by The Who's then-current hit Pinball Wizard, which is another song it'd be awesome to see Sam do perfectly!
@sampopkin
@sampopkin Жыл бұрын
That’s interesting, because John references Tommy by the Who in the outtake of Polythene Pam. He was saying Ringo’s Tom Tom drums were like Dave Clark or Keith Moon
@reginaldperiwinkle
@reginaldperiwinkle Жыл бұрын
You can hear on the Escher demos, recorded in about May 1968 before the White Album that John was already doing D-A-E with big emphasis on the E as a turnaround. It seems like it was already there from the beginning.
@JDrevolver66
@JDrevolver66 Жыл бұрын
@@reginaldperiwinkle True, though I think the reference is to the single strums like those that open the song, which aren’t on the Esher version. The quote also suggests MacDonald thought Pinball Wizard was played on a 12-string (it sounds like at least two tracks of Pete’s J-200 instead).

@reginaldperiwinkle
@reginaldperiwinkle Жыл бұрын
Thanks for all the nice touches on this. I wonder if John really played the Bb note in the Dm by mistake, or whether it is just a nice touch. The Bb seems in key to me and it is actually consistent with the vocal harmony, which goes from a G note to an F note, so John is implying some harmonies with intervals of sixths. It's actually clever.

Great job, but one thing I never understood about guitar players (I play bass) is the movement of the left hand to the end of neck between phrases. When their part is at rest, they invariably move that hand around when nothing i being played. I suppose with my instrument there's generally continual motion in the middle of songs so this habit is not something we tend to develop
@sampopkin
@sampopkin Жыл бұрын
That’s interesting, I play bass too but am mainly a guitarist. I’m not sure why that is the case. Clapton is a good example of someone who moved up and down the neck quickly all the time. He even would slide up to a note at the 14th (ish) fret after finishing a lower note, just to spice things up
