My friend was absolutely devastated when he found out that hamsters live only around 2 years. He also added that he feels bad for hamsters because they cannot go with friends to a bar and have a beer or two and he was absolutely depressed for next 5 minutes.

I cried watching this video. My hammy, Bean, just turned 2. She recently just had a major surgery of removing a mass on her back. She was doing so well until recently I found two new masses on her back when I thought she'd be okay a while longer. I am glad I did the surgery for her first one anyway, since she got to make it past her 2nd bday when the doctors said it was better to not do surgery and let her live up to her second year. It been a bit over month since her first surgery and the doctors said this is it for her and it wouldn't be smart to put her under something so traumatic again, just focus on her quality in life. I started giving some of her old medications to help with discomfort because that is all I can do, when I want to do so much more. She definitely seems like an old lady, she has a hunched back, she sleeps more, and has a less appetite. My heart just breaks seeing her like this. This may seem silly feeling so much for a hamster, an animal that have an especially short lifespan, but Bean really saved me. She is my first pet, I received her from my grandfather when I was in the middle of dealing with my newly discovered chronic sickness. She probably has little time left but I am so grateful for her. I will always love and remember her. I don't know what to do when the time comes when leaves me. I can't even imagine finding her in that state. Is it better to euthanize or let it be natural, with the probable discomforts of her life aside? Then what do I do after that? I'm too scared to search on the internet so I am just writing a paragraph on this wholesome hamster video, wow.

I understand cheddar cheese 2 years old she doesn't go on her wheel or play pen just sleeps a lot we lost this year 3 hampsters ghost and spirit and spider.ghost scream a lot and spirit was like a human I would wash up and he would lay on my shoulders and fall asleep I would chat to my hampsters 😢cry when I was sad we watch TV together and do same with cheddar cheese and punkin but I love Syrian hampster my hampsters lay in my pocket to

I went through something similar..it's so heartbreaking. I paid for medicines to make him feel better because I desperately wanted him to pass away naturally in his own home where he's happy. But it reached a point the vet said he would start suffering soon so I made the hard decision to put him down. It was heartbreaking but I just wanted to do what was best for him.

If you think your precious hamster looks as tho she's not in pain, then.., you could allow her to pass in her own time.., maybe the vet who saw her last would've suggested if she needed any painkillers? It can be hard as hammies are well known for hiding illnesses n vulnerablilities.., up until the last.., Ik it's so so hard.., my syrian female passed a few days ago, she was 2yrs n 1 month old 😔🐹 about 4 wks ago she looked totally normal.., n quickly slowed down, became much more sleepy, ate less, got a UTI, bladder infection.., the vet gave us antibiotics n painkiller.., the infection did clear up, but she jus didn't recover.., it was like her tiny body was done.., at only 2 years.., it's heartbreaking.. 💔😭 sorry if this comment is a bit sad.., but maybe something in it can help you ❤️

have you before talked about changing older hamsters to a "retirement" cage? i saw something before my hamster got so old and he was thrilled when i made little changes to his cage (instead of buying another). i took out the big shelf and ramp and put in a small wooden shelf with a short ramp. changed his little hidey house and removed the wheel as he stopped using it. he was so happy and content. :)

I think teddy bear males are also more likely to live longer. I've had Syrians as pets for almost 30 years. My longest lived one ever was a male teddy bear banded sable who came from a pet store. He made it to 2 years 11 months, and ultimately passed from kidney failure. Females don't tend to live as long as males. I've only had one female ever make it past the age of 2. She was a short haired sable I adopted from our local humane society, and she made it to 2 years 5 months.

Aww reminds me of my first hammy he was a grey syrian and called King louix he lived to be just about 3 years old and he got slower, he always liked to nap on me but when he got old it was a regular thing he liked his cuddles and his fur also got matted so I'd try groom him to help, was sad to see him go but he went peacefully wrapped in a blanket, my 2nd hammy female syrian queen cookie only lasted 6 months 😢 contracted a uti and had to be put to sleep 3rd hammy another female Syrian lady eve is almost a year now still going strong ❤

I had a Syrian hamster as a child and I was devastated when he passed at a little over 2 years. I knew it would happen, as my parents made sure I did my research before I was allowed to bring one home, but 2 years seems like a long time as a kid. Reflecting now as an adult though, I have to shout out my mom - who is absolutely terrified of rodents - for not only allowing me to have one, but helping me take care of him so that he lived his fullest life. Rest well, my little Houdini - you were the most dramatic little escape artist and I loved every day we had together.

My dwarf is 2yo and fought 2 cancers. Sadly, she has 2 news tumors... Vet said she will pass soon. She's constantly sleeping, she lost weight, she's not active anymore... I'm devastated. Love her so much.

😢 I understand on 18th October 2024 I lost my spider girl she was 1year old she had lump on her mouth lost weight but vet said give her medication she had lump and put on weight but vet said they can't operate as she took small but lump was not bothered her to I found lump on belly and her foot 😢😢 sadly had to put her down

So adorable 😍 I totally agree with you! Older hamsters are difficult and not easy to care. If their sick, you'll need to run to vet often, give medicine clean and feed them. My oldest child. He left mama at a ripe 3 years old. My first hamster with hamster care. Little that I know too the vet fees 🥹 but i'm so happy to hear that your senior kids are very healthy!

🙏 yeah, all info are valid.. I have had 16 hamsters, longest life so far was 2.77year-old, many of them died around 2 year old, I have 3 left and they are 23 months old, one had tumor and recovered recently...! A lot of good times and memory, but it gets really sad near the end... I buried most of them in plants, developed plant caring as a new hobby because of it, got like 90+ plants in this half year, moving on from 🐹 hamsters to 🪴 plants... less lively yet they can stay with me longer...

I'm really into cacti and succulents. Depending on the species, they can live for decades. I live in Ohio. I leave all my succulents and cacti outside as much of the year as possible. As long as temperatures are above freezing, they can stay outside. That keeps them happy and healthy.
