i think it depends on whether your hamster is bought from store or reproduce at home. It's easier to tame a hamster when they're still a baby, cause they can have more time to know your scent. But if it's from a store, then you need extra patience since it might experience bad condition or being treat improperly.

'scoop' them slowly from either side with your hands in a cupping motion. They'll usually just lift their feet and stand on your hands. It doesn't startle them as much as wrapping your fingers around them, and reduces the chances of them panicking and trying to struggle/bite. Never once been bit by a hamster in 20 years, even tricky rescue hamsters.

It’s also so cute when taming my hams, they’ll usually bite my fingers since they think it’s also food (when I got treats on my palm) but as they get older they learn the difference and it moves from thinking my fingers are good and biting, to test biting, to fully avoiding biting my fingers when grabbing seeds from me 🥰

Thank you for this, there’s lots of tutorials out there that are bad and I’m super happy about this one. Honestly i would say when taming a hamster you have to just hold them very often and be mega calm and speak with a soft voice if you have to speak. Feed them food from your hands, don’t expose your fingertips, pet them gently or put your other hand near them while they munch away and they’ll soon get used to your hand as something that brings food and pets.
@Oboromaru2 жыл бұрын
I'm amazed how calm your hamster are when you hold them. My Syrian hamster really hates being touched! My hamster came from a pet store though, not a breeder, so I think he got very little human interaction before I adopted him. I try to not touch him or pick him up unless it's absolutely necessary, like when I clean his enclosure. Since he does not like to be touched, I usually use a small box to take him out and transfer him to a temporary bin while I clean, and give him a treat. It's basically the same as the mug method, except with a box. I don't think any of my mugs are quite big enough for him to get inside of anyway, lol!! The box is much easier on him than me picking him up with my hand
@Oboromaru2 жыл бұрын
@TurboGamer what do you mean, "what is the point"?? I adopted this animal, he's my responsibility, so of course I will keep him and take care of him... I've read in many places before adopting him that it's not unusual for hamsters to want to be left alone, or be "ghost hamsters", which I'm pretty sure is what my hamster is considered, and that is fine with me. I won't simply dump him on the street just because he doesn't want to play and cuddle like a dog would. I didn't seek out a hamster to adopt with the expectation that it would be the same as having a dog... otherwise If I wanted an animal that I knew 100% I could always play and cuddle with, then I would have adopted a dog!
@LGTGHOSTHUNTING2 жыл бұрын
@@Oboromaru i've had 2 hamsters bought from stores that were timid and didn't want to interact. Fixed both of them by taking their cages into an empty bath tub and letting them out and just letting them run around with me in there sitting still. Its a bit nerve racking the first few times and yea i got nibbled both times the first go around when i moved my hand closer but both of them built up over a few days and i was able to pick them up and smooth them and so on. You just need to get into the head of a hamster and understand that their mentality is that of prey, in the wild they build a burrow and only come out for food then retreat back inside because everything is a threat to them. Once they know your not a threat your good to go.
@andreah45752 жыл бұрын

I've had lots of hamsters in my lifetime and I can say that I've only been bit maybe 2 or 3 times and I'm sure they were scared lately all of them have been very sweet and easy to hold. I was lucky to get a couple of them from a breeder and they were used to being handled early and by children to buy I was also lucky to get a few from a small local pet store that were easy and loved to be held. One time I was getting a hamster from the pet store and as soon as I opened the lid they all started climbing in my hand to be picked up saying Pick me....pick me. It was so hard to decide which one to bring home with me. There were about 5 of them. I didn't have the room or cages for all of them. Thank you for the good video. Hopefully it will help other new hammy owners how to take care of them. They are so cute. 😍💖

I've been keeping hamsters for 20+ years, Syrians and Dwarf, and I can count the amount of times I've been bit on 1 hand. It is one single hamster that's behind the worst bite I've ever received; my current Syrian female. She'll turn around and bite, or attack the hand if you put it down too quickly. She's a rescue, store bought originally by the previous owner. She simply doesn't have a good mentality and is very frightened of everything. It took me 5 months for her to trust me, and she's still got a strong mind of her own all the same. In order for me to pick her up safely, I have to let her know I'm there, and she needs to "put her back" against my hand to signal she's OK with being picked up. If she doesn't do that, I will back away and leave her alone. I am 100% convinced that most hamster bites are due to owners buying hamsters from stores and immediately attempt to handle them, or they're bought for young children that do not understand how to not scare them. Very nice video, I hope it will teach many new hamster owners how to avoid getting bitten, and help many hamsters not to be rehomed as a result of their owners becoming scared!

This is very helpful advice! Always respect ur pet! I've found that if you speak to them in a calm soft voice, after washing ur hands, approach them with ur hands low & in front of them so you don't scare them to death! They are prey to birds that dive from above & behind to snatch them for dinner. I use both hands to scoop them from under their feet. Very noninvasive, plus doing this slowly & gently, gives them the option to walk away if they don't want to be picked up. Just give respect & they will be sweet & calm. Unless you have a hammy that is just not human-friendly! Just like us, these cuties have personalities. Many don't like people, the same as many people don't like people.😉😊

I think it is important to mention that you should leave your new hamster alone for a few days before trying to pick it up. They are most likely going to be skittish in this new environment and bite due to nerves. My cutiepie little mixed dwarf Hanna was bought from a tiny shop near my house and it was immediately obvious that she had been taken good care of because of how fast she settled in. She has only ever bit me on accident (mistaken for food), out of boredom (when I hold her for too long) or out of tiredness (when I let her freeroam for too long) but never hard enough to actually leave a mark. For a while we even had a silent agreement where she bit me very very very gently to signal that she wanted to go back to her enclosure. Most of the time it was so soft I didn't even know if it happened or if I imagined it. Now she does not even do that. I guess I am just better at understanding her. She is my first hamster after all (had mice before). To pick her up I usually call out to her from afar so she recognizes me and does not hide. Then when she comes closer to say hi back I gently cup her with both my hands. She never climbes on my hand herself but stays still and calm when being picked up. I just love her so much ❤🐹❤

Hi! Just a heads up and a warning! 1:40 - be careful as some hamsters might not like being upside down (with their belly up), i think you should give a warning for that. I had many hamsters which did not let me turn them like that and hold them in upside down position, they were getting stressed and sometimes reacted with a energetic, almost violent wiggle to 'break free' and rotate back. This can cause the person to drop the hammy so if you try it, do it close to the floor and do not force your hammy into that position if he doesn't like it. To be more specific: this was happening almost instantly the moment they were turned over, so there is really little time to react to that. But overall, great video as always, love you bye!

If your hamster nibbles you, it's okay they're trying to play or get to know you better, etc. You can take your hand away if they do open their mouth to bite you but usually when they open their entire mouth they're yawning, or trying to bite to defend themself or something, But the bigger the hamster is the smaller their bite is ❤

Use the bathtub technique. Its never failed me. Take the cage in with you and open it up and let them run around in there with you, id recommend shoes just incase but the trick is the first few times just to stay still and let them approach you. Over time start bringing your hands to them and brace for a bite or two but after they've done it once they normally won't again just move your hand away slowly if they bite. Both times i have been bit they've scrapped their teeth first and i could have moved but didnt want to scare them. Either way after a few sessions they learn to trust you.

I only owned one hamster my entire life but he was a good fella and never bit anyone. He was an escape artist though so that was an entirely different ball of wax.

My hamster, Boba, is an absolute natural escape artist, she's a rescue hamster that is a golden Syrian one, and she managed to survive all alone in a house for months after her owners abandoned her T.T she is so sweet but she is ridiculously clever lmao

i got my hamster from a store and i think i´ve been doing a good work with him, he has never bitten me or any of my family, i think he is pretty chill, i give him his space if he doesn´t want to be held :3
