1:01:02 Yeah, that was just a translation change. It's actually Abaren-ohji/Abaren-ouji, depending on your spelling preference. "Oh/Ou" translates to "King." So most Sentai robots are usually called the team name minus the '-ger' part plus king. And then, "Ohji/Ouji" translates to "Prince." Abaren-ohji is a name with a few layers. Since it's a form without Ptera, it's one rank lower; from king to prince. Also, the head parts that Ptera makes could also be seen as the crown of Abaren-oh. And it's also a form that can be done in the toys, so the writers and producers could have also been poking fun at that angle as well when making the episode.

As the translator in question: I came up with the gag because I didn't translate the "Oh" suffix in AbarenOh. I could have used a translation note, but I rather have the dialog not need one and it made it more immediately obvious why Yukito was a bit incredulous after Ryouga dropped the name since. I explained my thought process on most if not all the translation choices in the original posts I did waaaaay back.

This was my favorite Sentai for the longest time (Up until Kyuuranger took the top spot) and still ends up somewhere in my top three no matter what. I'm so glad to see you taking a deep dive on it. I will NEVER understand why they cut out the talking dinosaurs from the US version. As if American kids wouldn't explode with excitement at the idea of not only a giant, transforming robot dinosaur but ALSO a giant, transforming robot dinosaur that could be your best friend.

Kyuuranger, thats the one with nine rangers, and the Space and Astrology Sign theme right? i have been meaing to watch that. as for the Talking Dino's... I feel like they really dropped the ball on that one tbh, i have not seen Abaranger personally, only really seeing the first 20 episodes of Gokaiger and looking at the first few episodes of Donbrothers. But honestly? Like... I dont know what they were thinking, this seems to add so much characterization to the Dino's and i would have loved to see that as a kid. but all well, i guess i should watch Abaranger lol. I am more into Kamen Rider personally, but power rangers got me into Tokusatsu so watching these comparison video's always brings a smile to my heart, seeing how the same Idea can spawn into two near completely different series. i love seeing the differences between the two, it really shows that you can do just about anything with an existing idea and still be unique.

I think it was the right decision because it creates more of a contrast between the two shows. The more differences - the better. Power Rangers is not and shouldn't be just re-shot Super Sentai, but it's own entity despite all the flaws. That's also the reason why I just don't get the "RESPECT THE SOURCE MATERIAL" crowd. No. Don't respect it. Ditch this mentality and do as much things your way as possible.

My guess is that it was considered too silly, there wasn't a plan for them, or the show didn't have the budget to bring enough actors to voice them. The reason why almost never see Omega Ranger in SPD unmorphed is because the executives were too cheap to have an actor for him in those scenes. The showrunners considered cutting him out entirely except there was too much footage of him. I imagine there being lots of footage of Abare Killer is the reason why Dino Thunder had the White Ranger Clone. There was still more footage of the character fighting the rangers so the showrunners needed an excuse to use it.

At that point power rangers was going for the more serious and grounded tone (well technically after turbo and not counting ninja storm), so the talking zords would have been kind of distracting

It should be noted that the head writer for this series, Naruhisa Arakawa, had his Super Sentai debut writing that episode of Jetman with that guy obsessed with cup noodles. Not only does that say a lot about his tone of writing, but it also says a lot about his preferred themes in a show. Whereas Inoue likes to write about “tragedy”, Sugimura “inheritance”, Takegami “failure”, and Kobayashi “loneliness”, Arakawa prefers themes of “passion”. All of his characters are defined either by their goal in life or by something that they take pride in doing.

I'm very curious about Super Sentai in general but would probably never be able to sit through another season back to back. And thanks to your videos I am able to appreciate them on the conceptual level. The sheer amount of stuff they were able to fit into the series fascinates me. How this whole scheme of characters, concepts and things relating to one another is so complicated yet coherent at the same time. It also makes me happy seing that Power Rangers is able to stand on its own legs as a franchise doing its own spin on the source material. This whole process, this whole idea of taking one show and making it into a completely different one feels so special for some reason. Glad to know it's not just RPM that's like this. Once again, thank you for letting me see this right here and now, so to speak. Really looking forward for more of this series of videos.

It should be noted that the writer for the episode that was used in in Dino Thunder, Yoshio Urasawa, was the head writer for Carranger. That should help explain the tone it's going for. Even later on, he would also write the Carranger tribute episodes for the 35th anniversary series, Gokaiger.

while I agree I also do feel its kind of a cheap fake out to pull in the 11th hour when it will last a total of six minutes. I dont think the ending is bad, just the final bit of drama there was unnecessary or could be rearranged so it didnt feel like a fake out

Great vid! Yeah, the sentient talking zords is the one thing I wish Dino Thunder had kept. Dino Earth was pretty cool too though Dino Charge would ironically give us a more boring version of that. I did hear they wanted to keep the white ranger evil for most of the season like Abarekiller, but Disney wouldn't let them.

I think that a good comparison you could do next is Beast Morphers and Go-busters. I know beast morphers is a newer series but I think that both series have many differences that would be fun to point out. I also think that Jungle Fury and Gekiranger would be a good comparison because they have a ton of similarities yet they also have many differences.

I hadn't watched Dino Thunder in years when I watched Abaranger so I wasn't sure which series was better. Dino Thunder did some stuff better (I much preferred its series premier) and Abaranger did some stuff better. Regardless, watching this season did give me a much greater appreciation for Dino Thunder since Abaranger is one of the more distinctly weird Japanese Sentai seasons. Super Sentai is a Japanese thing in general but even compared to other seasons Abaranger is a weird Japanese thing. As a result Dino Thunder had to rewrite far more episodes from the ground up for plots that would make more sense to an American audience.

I wish there was a way for him to cover ToQ-ger but unfortunately it's never been or ever will be adapted into PR. Too much male pink (the core five have a gimmick that they can swap colours with each other, the team leader, who's normally red, often switches with the girly girl that's normally pink), absolutely insane yet thouroughly enjoyable series (mostly for the villains).

I'm sorry you had to go through all that trouble to watch the Tsuribaka Nisshi episode. I am not sure where you got the subs or if you are aware, but the subs you are using for AbaRanger are fansubs, made by the fansub group Imagination Station. This fansub group also translated that crossover episode of Tsuribaka Nisshi/Fishing Fool's Diary. You didn't have to go through all that work, but your viewers appreciate all your hard work. Man im so glad you enjoyed Abaranger it is my favorite season also one of my firsts, I was watching it with the HK subs, back when Dino Thunder was airing in America there was a user who was putting out Abaranger (again the HK subs) weekly. Thanks for the hard work you did on getting the episode of the anime that wad the one thing I never knew existed. Although when you mentioned games at the end my heart sunk as I thought I had missed out on a proper Abaranger game, my mind was racing going no the games generally stopped at hurricanger on ps1 and didnt start again to much later.... Possibly Gokaiger on wii? Or a ds game. The bath scene at the end of Abaranger vs Dekaranger, mid teenager me certainly was happy with that fan service, Abaranger and Dekaranger definitely had some of the most beautiful women in Tokusatsu. Ah the end theme of Abaranger, wo cheesy yet so much fun. I used to publicly wear my old dino minder (long since sold it), to places like college. And I do enjoy Dino Thunder as a series, it was the first series I was watching as it aired in the US by relying on fan encodes of episodes while Ninja Storm was still airing in the UK, ninja storm being the gateway for me of getting power rangers back in my life and the gateway to letting Super Sentai and Kamen Rider in. Thanks for the nostalgia hit! Needed that! Especially while im dealing with some health issues.

They weren't killing 'characters', but the Grongi had a body count in the THOUSANDS. There's an episode a little before halfway in the season where a police report that you can read lists the casualties at 1389. That's before the "Big Money" players even take the field.

Hi I love your videos tbh I am upset I haven't made these types of videos first but I would like to correct you that in Super sentai Morphers are referred to to as changers at least to my knowledge, as words that revolve around transform are reserved for Kamen rider as every Kamen riders main transformation phrase is Henshin which means transform so for sentai to make it different the word is Henge or change although Kamen riders transfoms with belts and drivers mainly waist ansformation devices, but yeah sorry I just wanted to point that out, I can't wait for more of your content to come out
