OneTigris hits a homerun with the Tentsformer and add on integrated bug net. Not only is it a great fitting poncho but also a very serviceable shelter.

Multi-purpose items should always be a consideration. And the transformer poncho/tarp with the bug liner are great examples, I like it!

Cool! I have 2 of tentsformer's, because you can put 2 together and make a in closed shelter. The bug net I did not know about that would fit inside of the Tentformer. Thank you for the info!

I had seen that you could string two together and close them in but I've never tried it. Does it work pretty well? That would make for a sweet vestibule area if so.

@@rocksandrews Putting one inside out would mean that you cant zip it shut. Rotating it 180 degrees means the zippers will work.

The open end makes it less suitable for rain, and so if you check weather forecast before going out, you wont need the poncho - unless the forecast is wrong, and you have to pack up your stuff and hike home in the rain. A regular tent combined with a poncho tarp seem ideal if i expect rain. Being stuck in a tent during rain means i have to either lay down or sit in a crosslegged position, and neither option is ideal for many hours IMO. A tarp allows me to use a camp chair - or i can set it up above a wooden log or big rock or something, so i can just throw down a sit pad. For minimalistic multipurpose gear, i really like the Hilleberg Bivanorak (raingear/bivy hybrid designed for Swedish airforce pilots) as (unlike other bivys) it allows me to sit up straight and cook food or whatever. This creates a very similar feeling as cowboy camping, and i really like how easy it is to find a campsite, and how quickly i can set up camp. Just throw down a groundsheet on a relatively small trail, inflate the sleeping pad, and thats pretty much it. Ive camped with it in a swarm of mosquitos (once), and a headnet kept me sleeping like a child. A tarp is ideal if it rains, but ive heard of people using a spruce tree to cover the open head end. A great thing about the Bivanorak is that if i use a quilt or sleeping bag that opens in the bottom, i can walk around without getting out of my nice warm shelter, which is very nice on a cold morning, so i can sleep in the shade, and quickly move to a sunny area to make my morning coffee. A downside of it being 100% waterproof is that it is not very breathable, and so i would not recommend this for warm temperatures - but im kinda paranoid about snakes creeping up on me to seek heat, and so i prefer a tent for the warmer season. If used as raingear, its ventilation is not as good as a poncho, but still way better than a rainjacket. To help with ventilation, you can keep the zipper open and create baffles in the velcro. It is very roomy, so a smaller person should be able to fit a 60 liter backpack underneath the Bivanorak. Weight is 500g (including stuffsack), and it packs down to a size of maybe around 0.85 liter (i have not measured it - just eyeballing it). With the right equipment, you could easily use this shelter for an overnighter with just a 19 liter backpack. If anyone is interested, they can check out a short recent video on my channel where i unpack a full kit - including a 2 person tent and cookset - from the 19 liter Osprey Ultralight Stuffpack.

I saw that thumbnail with the bug net and saw "poncho tent" in the title and was sold. Ive spent like 30min looking though a good, well made poncho with the perks i want. And one is tentablility!

It's pretty cute, but if you going to use it as a poncho, you will wet bug net and yourself while setting a tent (and obviously you can't use poncho while it on a net bag). Also it has poor protection from slanting rain and you probably may use aditional tent, which makes it no sens because of this total amount of cloth this is more reasonable to use just normal tent kit + raincoat to set it in even heavy rain keeping it dry (and it may be even lighter and more compact). In the meantime if there is no rain at all you won't use poncho feachure, sooo we're just come back to a regular tent kit. But it's still cute, I like the concept, maybe some day I'll try to use it. For now I'm good with regular tent kit and Aricxi poncho, it's very light and comfortable, has a silver side from sun, a lot of eyelets and hooks and many options to use

You are quite welcome. I appreciate you taking the time to check it out. I've only had a few decent rains with it in shelter mode but I've backpacked wearing it several times in pouring rain. It eventually wet through around the zipper bit that was to be expected after an extended amount of time.

Nice video. Just wondering how tall you are and if you find that inner tent long enough. Thanks
@Hike-ALOT
@Hike-ALOT Жыл бұрын
I'm right at 6 ft even. The inner netting leaves a few extra inches at the head and foot but not a lot. Enough but not much extra. Then the poncho has a few extra between it and the netting. Thanks for checking out the video I'm glad you liked it.

I love mine. Just wish they made it slightly bigger in all dimensions. Once you put any sort of inflatable mat in there, you'll find your face is now right up against the netting. Also, at 5 foot 11, the bug net inner, has exactly enough room to fit inside of it and no extra. Just things to be aware of.

Your face is snug but even at my 6’ I haven’t minded it a bit. A bit more space is always a plus though.

I typically sleep just fine inside also. I would advise people planning on using a mat to get one that is less than 3" in thickness. A nice 1.5" mat should give pretty decent headroom. I'd also like to see a 2.0 version that makes the bug net affix to the tentsformer perfectly and also give you the ability to tighten it out so that it pulls away from the face as best it can. Great shelter system. @@Hike-ALOT

As low as their prices are, I think it’s produced in China. I could be mistaken though. The website really doesn’t say. The company primarily makes pet supplies but they have this odd little service line of things that are outdoor gear.
