When it comes to aquarium filtration there are so many companies trying to over complicate the process when it is a very simple one. This just brings it back to where it should be. Simple and effective. Groovy.

Yes it supports both. Seachem matrix is also supposed to support it too but tests I've done and seen seem to show that water has a problem getting to the internal part of that media. If water can't get there neither can waste to feed bacteria.
@pondguru

Unlike most new products now the added trace elements are actually there for a reason - not just to market it to fanboys. The media really is very good so thanks for appreciating that, man.

I feel as if the pressure is off now as both myself and the guy who makes this for me have been striving to come up with the best filter product for years and this is it. I can't take much credit though as all I did was suggest a smaller version of ultra (resulting in 'mini ultra') then asked if the trace elements from 'plus' could be added to it. It was foing to be too difficult to get it all to bind together then one day I got a call to say he'd done it so he's the one who did all the work.
@pondguru

Glad it's all going well. It is indeed special media. Yes, it is all the same mix but during firing it changes colour. The internal part of the media is fired but since it doesn't get the intense heat of the outside (it is more dense too) it keeps its original colour. The pattern of colour demonstrates the anaerobic zone quite nicely on this media so I often snap some to show where the anaerobic bacteria live in the core.

Yes, it is the same elements used in Biohome plus which has been used for years in marine systems with great results. Biohome plus is mentioned a few times on forums about use in marine and although the ultimate media is different structure, all ingredients are the same.

I purchased the Bio ultra media from you and it is doing a great job I believe I have 45 Talopia in a 50 gallon tank and they are 4-8 inches in length with a filter pad and poly stuffing to filter the large particals out as much as posible but I still change out about 25 % of my water every two weeks to keep the water somewhat clear but all in all I would say this actually works I havent lost any fish yet and they eat vigorously I do feed them about 1/4 lb of food every week which really loads the system but it is working Thanks for the media tip

Richard I thank you for biohome. I bought the ultimate and the bio gravel. I put the ultimate in my Fluval 407 and the bio gravel in my tidal 110. I have a heavy stocked 55 gallon mbuna tank that has always had issues with nitrates. I mean, 3 days after a water change and my nitrates would be at 100 ppm. I kid you not, in 2 weeks after putting the biohome in my filters my nitrates are staying steady at less than 40 ppm which is way better than it was. My goal is to only do 1 water change a week and it seems like I am well on my way. This stuff is legit and worth every penny. Oh, I also used the seachem flourish as you suggested. That could have helped as well. Again thanks and keep up the good work!!!

Oh my god I have just ordered 1kg of biohome ultimate, from your eBay store, and I am simply amazed. Delivery, arrived way before was expected. I am running 1 kg in a fluval 306 canister filter with some ceramic and foams in the other trays, tank size 125 Litre. I measured my nitrates before putting in and I am ashamed to say they were pretty high at 40ppm. I know bad me. I have run the media for a little over 24 hrs and tested my water, 3 time on different kits to be sure, as I was surprised to see that my nitrates are now at 0. I am so impressed with this media and will be stocking up on this to distribute to the other aquariums I take care of. This is just simply amazing.

Thanks for the order - That is a strange one as we've had lots of people say similar things about an instant reduction in nitrate like that and to be honest we can't work out why that would happen so fast. The majority would continue with no / low nitrate but some do rise again before falling and staying permanently low. We are speculating that it could be due to some of the trace elements having an immediate effect on nitrate but don't know for sure. Thanks for the report and I'd be interested to hear if levels stay zero or rise again, if so how long it takes to return down.

Hey. After your reply I decided to test my water again another 24hrs later and you were correct nitrate had gone back up to 18ppm(day2). Then 24hrs later 12ppm(day3). Finally back at zero(day4). I have tested every day since and I am now stable at zero. Thanks again

The word will surely spread about the new media as it is indeed very good stuff. Bot filters are internal but totally different types. One is as far from a traditional filter as you could imagine and the other may at first seem gimmicky but everything about it is designed to filter the water as efficiently as possible.

They are for water conditioning and they release a natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal treatment into the water. They also can drop the pH if used in large enough amounts but most people use them as a background treatment for fungus / bacteria while breeding fish.

Excellent stuff. Firmly convinced that this media (and the little gel bacteria balls sent out with the filter kit) are the reason I managed a stable fishless cycled tank in three and a half weeks (125 litre tank). 1 Kg perfectly fills a tray in my AllPondSolutions 1000EF and I'm about to order another Kg to replace the remaining noodles and bio-balls and see if I can get enough anaerobic bacteria going to tackle my high Nitrates (roughly 40ppm out of the tap!). Very glad I stumbled onto your product before starting out keeping tropical fish, thanks.
@pondguru
@pondguru 7 жыл бұрын
Yes with 2kg in a system of only 125 litres you should have no problems nailing the nitrates down but the media does take a few months to mature to the point where nitrates fall (the anaerobic bacteria responsible for nitrate reduction set up much slower than the aerobic bacteria)
@pondguru
@pondguru 11 жыл бұрын
Yes although you may be better going for Biohome standard or plus which is naturally smaller and easier to snap into smaller pieces.

It just costs what it costs to send it. That is proportionally less with bigger amounts but it is expensive to send from UK to US or vice versa. I send quite a bit to Australia too and the postage is high there too. Europe is obviously less as it's not as far away.

I didn't even know Reef One made a marine version of the Biorb. We gave up selling the Biorb tanks years ago when it became apparent how unsuitable they were for fish due to the ineffective filtration. I'm not sure what is involved in the reef conversion kit so can't comment on that unfortunately. The Biohome media will replace any existing filter media but I'm not sure what the reef version of biorb have as media.

Sounds like there is a blockage in the pipe reducing the suction. If that's not the case you may have to swish a net back and forth to catch the muck which can't be removed.
@pondguru
@pondguru 11 жыл бұрын
Oh right, lol. I wouldn't bother changing that personally as since it just sits at the bottom of the tank it doesn't really act as a filter. The only real filtering is done by the tiny foam in the bottom of the tank. The best thing for Biorb tanks is amano shrimps which will pick the alfagrog (lava rock type stuff) but like all shrimps they are susceptible to amminia and nitrite spikes which can plague biorbs.

Pondguru, I just started using this on 8/5/2017 and I think I'm already seeing a result. I soaked the biohome for several days (6 days perhaps?) in tank water and starter bacteria, I replaced all of the ceramic rings that I'd been using with the Biohome Ultimate and stacked them vertically within the top tray of my C530. 2 kilos nearly completely filled the tray and I made up the gaps with maybe 200gr of zeolite just to take up the slack between the biohome media pieces. The next day I did get a somewhat sharp nitrate and nitrite spike, and ammonia went to just under 5ppm, but after 48 hours everything is as good as I've ever seen it. Ammonia and nitrite are at or near zero. Nitrate is somewhere between 5-10ppm. My PH did come up a little bit, but it's still well within safe limits. Knock on wood this works for me. It's been 72 hours now and as of this AM things are looking really well.
@pondguru

I'm glad things are going well, as long as there is enough media used you should eventually see nitrates fall further although they are already incredibly low.

Bacteria is essential as it processes fish waste from ammonia to nitrite and in some cases (if the media will support it) nitrate. There are aerobic and anaerobic forms of bacteria but most media will only support aerobic bacteria which results in a build up of nitrate which is removed by plants and partial water changes. If the media will support anaerobic bacteria there will be less nitrate and you'll need to do less water changes.

@pondguru 9 жыл бұрын
Reefer Dave. It is really excellent media. Are you seeing a reduction in nitrate? Just curious as you'd generally use 1kg per 100 litres (so would require 4-5kg in FX6). The nitrate reduction is hampered by nitrate producing media (e.g. ceramic rings, plastic balls) so depending on other media in there the nitrate may continue to rise or be controlled.

Pondguru My tank is 300 Litres but the fx 6 has a load of ceramic media and sponges as well . I might swap out all the ceramic for biohome over the next few months. I have not tested Nitrate in a while but will leave the media in a few weeks and test.
@pondguru
@pondguru 9 жыл бұрын
Reefer Dave. It does take between 4-6 months for the biohome to reduce nitrate (from the anaerobic bacteria) but it has no chance against all the ceramic media as it will be pumping out nitrates. The biohome will still be doing a great job on the ammonia and nitrate but with nitrate producing media overpowering it there is almost no chance of it lowering nitrate unfortunately. See how it goes and if you feel you need more you know where I'm at no worries.

@pondguru
@pondguru 10 жыл бұрын
In a well set up external filter you should get at least 6-10 years of high efficiency from the media but it may last well beyond that.

Great vid's...I have a 170 gallon fresh water tank currently housing Tilapia. I have a 60 gallon sump. How much biohome-ultimate would you add to the sump ? The tank has been up and running 2 months using an eheim 2217 and a thousand GPH pump which feeds the sump, any suggestions ? Thanks !

I don't have this media but I think I already love it. 😅😅 I would need to replace my matrix as it is 2 years old and all clogged up but looks like I am too poor for biohome ultimate :( :( :( Well done to you sir.

lol, most of the filters people mention I have no idea what they are as there are so many types out there. 500g of mini ultra takes up approx. cubic 0.7 litres volume but if you weigh the media you have in there you will get a close approximation of how much mini ultra you need as it will take up a little more space than biomax for the same weight.
@pondguru
@pondguru 11 жыл бұрын
If you have 1kg of fluval media in there you will still need to get the 1kg Biohome. Biohome standard and plus will take up about the same volume as the fluval media and Biohome mini ultra and ultimate will take up more space than the fluval media so you should have some spare from a 1kg bag.

I've been running it around a year now and I'm finding particles or the media everywhere, as it's slowly breaking down and basically turning in to red sand. I found it collecting on the inside of the glass on the algae.

Nope. I also find fragments of it at the bottom of the canister. It's definitely disintegrating slowly. I have ceramic rings in the same filter which don't do it and also alfagrog in my pond which has been very good.

I have a marine tank with a few fish in there. I wonder if Biohome Ultimate will have any effect on the fish when I put them in my filter?
@pondguru
@pondguru 10 жыл бұрын
If you have a mature system it is best to replace 25 of the old media every 2 weeks so in 2 months you will have replaced all the media. That will be an easy transition for water quality and you should get no issues of ammonia or nitrite while filter matures. In a freshwater system you would replace 25% of old media every week with the new media but marine takes longer to mature.

'New fangled', lol I'm glad you decided to swap out media and as long as you use enough for the size of tank and stock I'm sure that you'll be pleased with it. In 20+ years in the aquatic trade I haven't sen a better media - that's why I made it my life's mission to get it in as many filters as possible since most tanks are overstocked and under-filtered. Everything revolves around filtration and when it is done right the fish are happier.

i have a cloudy 180gal tank. i plan to have a 2 step filtration. top is mechanical polishing pads, follow by biohome ultra 2kg. will this be enough to clear the cloudy water?
@pondguru
@pondguru 9 жыл бұрын
The foams and pads will make the water clear and the media will make the water healthy. If you want to see nitrates down close to zero you would need 1kg of biohome per 100 litres although much less will ensure that the ammonia and nitrite are kept in check. Therefore for 180 (US?) gallons you would need 7kg of biohome to see nitrate hammered down. (you may actually need less, the 1kg per 100 litres is a guide)

Like all very porous media it will break up over a very long time due to the lifitin in and out during maintenance. If the filter is set up properly however the disturbance will be minimal allowing the media to last a very long time.

I just ordered 5KG of Biohome Utimate, I live in the states or I would have ordered from you, one question, I have a Fluval FX6 like you are showing, do I need to put a third party bacteria additive in, or will the natural bacteria just form? I have a 125 gal aquarium and I want to have this done just like you did, so please let me know, and thanks for a great video
