I made the first FlowKooler water pumps at the Brassworks in Turlock Ca. back in 1985. The solid impeller keeps the coolant from cavitation compared to a stamped impeller that looks like an alternator fan. If you have a water pump that has a solid cast impeller already there won't be any difference.
@FastMonty3 жыл бұрын
Wow, cool story... thanks for sharing the differences... the other nice thing about the Flow Kooler pump is the clearance in between the fan and divider plate. Thanks!

I gap my divider plates no matter what. The method I use is to hammer the plate down to the impeller till it just touches without gaskets and then use the gasket as the shim. I'd be concerned painting the divider plate as cavitation could lift that paint off and stick the thermostat or gum up water ports. Good luck with that.

I'm considering this pump, would you recommend doing this with the motor in the car? Did you do their timing cover also? I'm in the middle of pulling my intake to cut and paint it and even though my pump works great, it doesn't look great. Thoughts?
@FastMonty Жыл бұрын
Yes, this pump is great, and you can do it while the engine is in the car. I'm not familiar with their timing cover? If you do elect to change pumps, I'd recommend painting the edge of the divider plate that's visible in between the pump and timing cover. Have fun!
@davidsutton9148 Жыл бұрын
Quick question… I’m running the later 11 bolt Flowkooler pump. Do the rubber sleeves need to be in contact with the divider plate, or should there be a gap? Mine seems to have about 1/8” or so, I can wiggle the sleeves and feel that there is a little room. Thanks, and your videos are fantastic!
@FastMonty Жыл бұрын
That's a great question. My impression was the sleeves do contact the divider plate when everything is bolted together. But, I honestly never double checked that. A 1/4" gap seems excessive to me. Let me know if you figure out the real answer, and I'll do the same. Thanks for being a part of the channel!
@davidsutton9148 Жыл бұрын
@@FastMonty trusted sources tell me that the sleeves should “gently and firmly “ butt against the ports on the divider plate. I’m going to slip a couple of 1/8” thick 1” inside diameter o-rings on the sleeves to resolve the issue. Or maybe cut some 1” heater hose into 1/8” ringlettes. Slip them up to the shoulder on the sleeve and should be good. Thanks again for a great channel.

I've got a newly rebuilt 1969 Pontiac 350. It's got some overheat issues. I'm just wondering why the hot water from the intake goes directly into the water pump. Mine is the same way and I havn't found anything online yet about it. If you could awnser here that would be great, Thanks, loved the video.
@FastMonty4 жыл бұрын
Good question... the water goes from the water pump to the intake manifold, and into the heads... then comes back through the block, into the water pump. When the thermostat heats up, it opens, and water goes up and out, into the top of the radiator. That's the flow. Did you use a laser thermometer to verify the temperature? When I first rebuilt my motor I used a GM/Chevrolet temperature sending unit, which is WRONG. If you're using stock analog Pontiac gauges, your temperature will read 50 degrees too high. So, make sure you have a PONTIAC temperature sending unit, and verify your temperature with a laser thermometer. You can get one at OPGI. here's the link... www.opgi.com/gauges-accessories/sending-units/temperature-sending-unit3/sending-unit-temperature-1964-72-w-gauge-kr00611.html Thanks for watching! Let us know what you find!
@R0yL334 жыл бұрын
@@FastMonty Water gets pumped into the block first, then up into the heads, then to the x-over in the intake manifold. If the thermostat is open, hot water goes into the upper rad hose. Some water is always recirculating from the x-over back into the water pump so you still get some circulation even when the thermostat is closed. Even when the engine is warming up, water around the exhaust seats is quite hot, and you also need water to flow past the temperature switch (edit:) and thermostat.
@FastMonty4 жыл бұрын
@@R0yL33 Thanks Roy, you're right. I was focused on the water exiting the manifold through the top hose, and that water from the intake does not go directly into the water pump. Must've been too tired when I was thinking about it... ha ha. Thanks for the comment!

@@FastMonty The problem with POR is that #1 . . it will peel. That happens because it's adhesion is not good at times. It's a very hard material; once cured, but that does nothing for you if it can't "hold on" to where it was applied. #2 The surface is critical for POR. It even says new metal is not where it should be applied. Even perfectly clean metal, it lacks adhesion. A much better material out there is Master Series Silver. It is a primer, but is also moisture cured as POR is. It can go over any substrate, rusted, clean, chemically etched, etc. That is a huge difference. You can top coat it with anything, literally. Check it out. I've been using it for over 25 years.
