That was only to replace an injured Steve Waugh. But he was a fine ODI cricketer, playing that format more than 50 times for Australia. He was also a Great domestic Cricketer. Queensland's all-time leading run-scorer in first-class cricket.

Arjuna Ranatunga one of the finest human beings to have graced the game of cricket. And Ponting the greatest of batsmen who played to win and always putting pressure on the opponent. Ponting was a player of big matches like world cup finals. Amazing cricket amazing times those!

Mark Waugh summed it up best, quoted a day or so later " ... he will make a lot of hundreds, I don't think he needs to worry too much about that one ... " And so it proved to be, 41 test tons 3O one day tons which is only 2 less international centuries than the mighty Waugh twins combined. Ponting also clocked up another 6 9Os in test cricket so 6 of his 62 scores in tests between 5O and 99 inclusive were 9Os, which is slightly less than 1 in 1O. Mathematical probability would say that 1 in 5 scores a batsman makes between 5O and 99 inclusive would be 9Os. He played his first and last test on the same ground, the WACA in Perth, I wonder how many other cricketers did this somewhat oddity?

Bryce In terms of pure batting records, forget Ricky Ponting, no one comes anywhere near the great Sachin Tendulkar. Sachin has 100 international centuries to Ponting’s 71 and 34,000 odd international runs to Ponting’s 27,000 plus.

TheFallRise Comparing Lara and Sachin is like comparing Ferrari with Porsche, while u are entitled to have your opinion on which and why u think is better, there will always be someone with an equally appropriate reason as to why they think the other is better. So its pretty meaningless debate really. Sachin, Lara, Ponting, Kallis all were modern greats and I think everyone will agree to that. peace!

@zoeherriot
@zoeherriot 5 жыл бұрын
@@indiabharat5014 You may have misunderstood what Ponting was saying here. He acknowledged that he was encouraging him - he was just saying that at that moment in time, even encouragement was hard to take. He was not accusing him of rubbing salt in the wound, he was stating that's how he felt in that moment as result of a number of factors (the encouragement, the bad decision, the emotion of nearly getting 100 on debut). There was no malice or bad sportsmanship in Ponting's statement here.

Some do some don't. Mark Waugh did, Mohammad Azharuddin did in each of his first 3, Doug Walters did in each of his first two. I believe Javed Miandad scored a double ton on debut, certainly a ton anyway. There are other true greats who achieved the feat. Bradman scored 18 and 1 on debut Viv Richards 3 and 4. Both scored tons in their second test as did Zaheer Abbas.

3:42: I think Ponting is taking it a bit harsh on Ranatunga, it simply seems the senior was showing a nice gesture patting him in good sportsmanship and congratulating him on a solid debut and not really in any sort of "rub salt in the wound" kind of way. May be Ponting thinks everyone else thinks like him and the aussies.
@DannyB_7
@DannyB_7 6 жыл бұрын
I dont think he means it like that to be harsh on Ranatunga, I think its worded badly. More that Ranatunga came to him to say back luck but "it felt" like he was rubbing salt in the wounds at the time. I can see him feeling that way cause that was a shocker. I could be wrong though.

I remember watching this match if my memory serves me correct this is Dec1994 If you watch his innings ball by ball, you can see he edge a one to the wicket keeper and given not out He is a great player no doubt about it But the 100 if have got it would have being undeserving one After all he made many 100s against SL and others without the help of the umpires
