The straps holding the rear subframe in were just for the ride home on the highway.

Subarus are design for peoples scared of winter, not for off-road ! They do have one of the most efficient all wheels drive ever. But they are built like a little Japanese sedan car !

Very nice. Did the trailing arm come off because of the tow strap pulls? Or just wear and tear?

The entire rear subframe was disconnected from the body because that part of the body was rusted out and fatigued. Would be cool to see your Forester in action sometime.
