I got Skittles in 2011. He was 1yr 2wks old and had been to three different pet stores. He basically chose me as I was not in the market for a new bird (I had a cockatiel at the time). When I first saw him in the display case he came down to see me and was 'hopping' up and down with excitement. I'd never seen a bird hop and I gasped. A lady nearby heard me and came over to see. So I stepped away so she could see him. He totally ignored her and went up his tree perch and began to preen himself. She made a snide remark and then walked away. Before I left, I went to say goodbye to him and he came right back down and did his hopping thing and rolled over. I wanted to buy him then and there but the clerk talked me out of it when I mentioned I live in an apartment building. For the next four days I could not stop thinking of about him so I did a ton of research about them and decided I had to have him so I bought him. He is VERY loud and for the first two years I had him, he was impossible to deal with. But that was because I wasn't setting limits and was basically spoiling him rotten. So, I retrained him using timeouts and I am CONSTANTLY enforcing boundaries and now he is VERY obedient (for a sunny anyways, lol, mischief is their middle name). I lucked out because he was potty trained by a lady in the pet store and I didn't realize this til he kept flying off my shoulder and pooping in his cage or on the playstand and then flying back to me. He was also taught to make 'kissy noises' by that clerk. Long story short, he is MUCH quieter than he used to be. I enforce boundaries BUT I also had to make a LOT of changes to my daily routine and also make numerous sacrifices to accommodate his needs. He's free-flighted so he gets PLENTY of exercise and is quiet most of the time. In fact, the only time he screams now is to 'alert me' to danger (or perceived danger) or to point out something (like his food or water dish is empty) or he wants a bath or wants to go bedtime. While I would never recommend someone getting a sun conure if they live in an apartment, I made it work for me but I'm more an exception than a rule. I should also note, I'm disabled so I am home 95% of the time. I go out maybe 2 to 3 days a week or about 2-3 hours each time. So he doesn't spend much time in his day cage. This has a lot to do with him being so quiet. I don't have company often (in fact, the only time people come over is usually maintenance or pest control during the day). If I have company over, I wait til after he goes to bed. He's not properly socialized because I'm pretty much a loner. So the down side is, I can't let him out with other people around. If they get within 6 feet of me he will attack them and he's REALLY nasty about it too. He's a sweetheart with me, but he's Hitchcockian Hellbird to other people, unfortunately. Just to show how jealous he gets, if I want him to come to me and he doesn't want too, I will talk sweet in my 'birdy voice' to the remote or the pillow or whatever and he'll crap a brick and fly right over as if saying "oh, hell no. you do NOT talk to ANYONE but me in that tone!" But I love him dearly and he's now 11 years old and we've been together just over 10 years. I feed him organic pellets, so he's well cared for.
@PoodlesandParrots3 жыл бұрын
Aww, that's a love story! You 2 were meant to be together💛💛💛 very lovely to read about how you and Skittles have grown together over the years. He is very lucky he found you and that you found him! Sun Conures tend to be one person people and you are his person so it is natural for him to be jealous or protective, Mango can be the same way! But we have been working on socializing him more and more🙂 Skittles is in good hands we see and well taken care of, well done! Wishing you and Skittles a pleasant day! Cheers!!

Our son is 11 & has had a lutino cockatiel (our very first bird) since March. We were at a bird supply shop yesterday to buy seed and toys and saw that they had LOTS of birds for sale that are all hand raised by the owner of the store. We ended up with a 4 month old female (she was hatched on April 1, 23) & our son named her Salsa, (our cockatiel's name is Chip & our son loves Mexican food so we now have Chip & Salsa😂as pets)

Mango is adorable!! I've had my sun conure, Lester, for almost 4 years now and he's a handful, but I absolutely love him!! They are incredible animals and I could cuddle him all day! lol. What veggies do you use in his chopped up mixture? Lester isn't super crazy about veggies, but he loves fruit! Watermelon and grapes especially. Of course though I want him to eat me veggies, so I'm curious what you use. Also, quick tip, make sure Mango has more than just round perhes to perch on. Having different textures, shapes and sizes is not only good for them, but its necessary. If they only have round perches, it'll end up hurting their feet. You may or may not already know that. You're obviously a wonderful, loving and educated fur and feathered momma! lol. Its amazing what these birds are capable of and all that they teach us. To those who are thinking about it. They're very time consuming, but if you have the time and are ready to make a HUGE, long term commitment, then they're also super rewarding!! 🦜🤗🥰

So, I got my Sun Conure from a local breeder in 1996, Baby was hand raised and hand fed. Wife drove, and baby just crawled all over me on way home. Don't know why, but just knew it was a female bird. Laid some eggs around 7 years old first time. Had to let her sit them until she lost interest otherwise would start laying again. Loves to get in water and things she shouldn't, so like a toddler, have to be aware all the time. If cooking something wet like soup or have water in the sink, have to close the cage. Loves crawling down my arm to get into about an inch and a half of water in the kitchen sink and splash all over for about five minutes than enjoys a bundling in a cotton towel for another five minutes. Loves to get near the edge of my dinner plate and pick and choose. If we have a salad, have to set one for her also, else can't get near my own. Absolute favorite in the salad is the tomato, followed by cucumber and any fruit. Attacks bananas, tears the peel to pieces ferociously, but likes the banana. At around 15 years old, figured how to flip open the sliding door to her food. The cage was outside and of course she flew away. Just left the cage open and out and a tape recorder on endless loop. She was returning to the cage to eat and then leaving for about a week. Stopped putting food in the trays and started eating outside by the cage at dinner. She finally flew down to me, gave me a screech and started in on my salad. Put her in her cage and no problems since. She is twenty-six now but still active. Got a quaker 3 years ago, they get along pretty good as long as not in the same cage.

Maleah Maleah I have a 16 year old Sun Conure. When he was younger he would never shut up. Now he almost never screams unless there is something sincerely wrong he is making me aware of. It took many years before A). He mellowed out and B). He developed the presence of mind and knowledge of what I want form him. whenever there is a nice quiet moment where both of you are sitting there relaxed and your conure closes their eyes.. Tell them how good they are for being quiet. I learned from my father to constantly reinforce how good and sweet they are being when they are quiet and presenting desirable behavior. Telling them they are bad for being loud makes a young bird feel like they are being attacked and they dont learn anything. You need to slowly teach them by rewarding those calm moments with words like good or quiet so that they actually understand the terminology and what you want from them when you holler back at your bird to be good, or quiet down.

@@FISHONWHEELS Sunny is a happy bird I’m sure! I would recommend my other video kzbin.info/www/bejne/op6qYq1vi9uWacU and I would also suggest getting a good sized roomy cage or aviary for your bird. It’s good to let them be free and exercise while spending time with their human flock everyday but you want to have a safe space for them. You want to have them in the aviary for sleep time (12 hours) and whenever your bird is not supervised - if your busy or going out.

Whenever the nails get too sharp I go for a nail trimming with our avian vet. To keep the trimmings to last longer it helps to have a sanded perch in a short term perching spot only** and you can also train your bird to do little nail files at home. Episode 25 of the parrot podcast talks about it!😀

I think the first thing you need to know is that you miss them terribly when they are gone. I lost my beautiful Mango last month after 22 years together. I have a number of other birds, but he has left a huge hole in my life. People used to see me walking in safe areas of the countryside with him and would ask "do you know you've got a parrot on your shoulder?". He occasionally flew off a short way but always came straight back or sat and waited for me to collect him. I don't think you've really lived unless you've shared your life with a Sun Conure. They are endearing, loyal, funny but extremely loud.

I just got my bird s few days ago and EVERY TIME I get it out it flys to my fan I have 2 and they flock together if 1 flys to the fan the other flys do you have any thing to help?
@PoodlesandParrots10 ай бұрын
If it’s a standing fan you can move it if it’s a ceiling fan I would always keep it off and create a bird areas in your home, incorporate more tree stands and other areas for them to have for perching and hanging out instead of the fan. Tree stands with toys and fun things to do like foraging! Hope that helps and I have several videos on ideas for foraging etc 🙂

@PoodlesandParrots7 ай бұрын
Parrots poop on average every 15-20 minutes. I would only recommend housing birds together once you know they get along well and there won’t be any issues. Sun conures are a bit bigger than lovebirds and you want to ensure safety for each bird🫶🏼 every bird also has their own personality🙃

We bonded a bit on the car ride home and he/she really loves us. The baby is easy to bond with and they don't scream a lot. Only to say hi or he gets angry when we leave. @PoodlesandParrots2 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! 😊Male and female Conures look very similar, so DNA testing is often needed to tell them apart. Their average lifespan is around 20-30 years with proper care.🫶

@@WillyPimentel hormones - meaning they want to mate. There are different signs including biting, regurgitation, being territorial etc

@@WillyPimentel you need to develop trust with your bird and go at their pace, you shouldn’t force them but they should also be getting out of the cage time daily for a few hours. I can also recommend a consult with BirdTricks if your looking for 1-on-1 help with your bird.

My sun conure brothers are about 3 years old. They love me, but they have limits on how I can touch them. They kiss me and cuddle, but I am not allowed to touch their bodies or head even affectionately. They do not like mingling with anyone else, especially those who have no idea how to handle birds. I think that I have a lot to learn!
