In the UK we call them budgerigars or budgies. 50 years ago you couldn't visit an older person's home without meeting one or two. They were good company for lonely old folk.

My Gran had a blue one called Beauty. Every afternoon she'd close all the doors and windows and let him out for a flight. We'd sit in the room together and read (Gran passed when I was 10 in the mid-70s, so it gives you an idea of what things were like). Beauty would fly around for a while, then he'd settle on one of our shoulders - the one next to the other person as we sat side to side - and he'd listen to us reading. I know we had a green budgie at the same time, but I only have the vaguest memory of it. Not sure where it came from or where it went. My mum didn't like having birds indoors (for good reasons, she believed they should all be in their natural habitats and flying freely), so perhaps the green one was a temporary one who we were watching for someone. (Can't ask my parents anymore, sadly). I do miss Beauty, even though I generally agree with my mum's view. He was such a funny character and Gran loved him to bits.

@@y_fam_goeglyd, your story is so wholesome. Thank you for sharing! I found it very relatable. I am 23 years old and I live with my sedentary grandma since I was 18, because she needed daily help around the house, and I volunteered to help. We have a green budgie, that we call Jerry or Jeremy and he is 4 years old. He is such an adorable and intelligent bird, and we let him fly freely in the apartment so he goes into the cage only for the night (we have nets on all of our windows for his safety). My grandma loves him so much and he loves her as well. I work at office and go to university, so most of the day my grandma spends with Jerry and she talks to him, reads him rhymes, stories and plays with him. Jerry even speaks just like her! My grandma rarely smiles, because of her medical conditions, but she always smiles and even laughs when Jerry swims and washes himself in the bowl of water, or when he talks and preens at the same time. I love them both so much.

And if you had a drink in your hand or sitting around, Bud would come out of his cage to help you drink whatever was in the glass. Bud was always there when someone came home from work zipping out of his cage and landing on your shoulder to say hi for a few minutes. About a year later I found Bud had left us during the night. Went outside and cried like a baby. I didn't even realize how attached I was to Bud until that moment of seeing him. Not a day went by for months that I didn't think about him, especially when I had a drink in hand or sitting next to me. And coming thru the door and not hearing Bud flip that cage door open just made me sad....

People think that these birds can and should be in the wild, but that is a terrible notion! They're domesticated, and need to be under proper care. It's like if you went to a pet store, bought a puppy, then just dumped it in the woods because "they belong in the wild." Disgusting.

Easy way to tell the genders on adult parakeets. Look at the bird's nostrils above their beak. Males have a blue coloration, females have brown. Males tend to be more talkative, Females tend to be more docile and quiet, but this isn't a strict rule. Your parakeet may vary. Congrats on your new friend for life!
