POOLMAN Movie Review | Chris Pine | Annette Bening | Danny DeVito

Chris Pine's "Poolman" aims to be a wacky, shaggy L.A. noir, but it's incessantly annoying and shrill and never comes together. Pine's feature filmmaking debut as director, co-writer and star is an homage to "Chinatown" in particular and Los Angeles in general. But the character he plays, pool cleaner Darren Barrenman, is little more than a collection of quirks rather than a recognizable human being. "Poolman" also wastes an incredible supporting cast, including Annette Bening, Danny DeVito, DeWanda Wise, Jennifer Jason Leigh and the always reliable Stephen Tobolowsky. In theaters now.

I saw this a few weeks back and I wasn’t aware that it was getting destroyed by critics at the time. To me there was nothing egregious about this movie, it was just kind of a regular movie I guess. Although it was tough seeing Chris talking to Josh Horowitz this morning. Chris is kind of bummer out of the reception his movie is getting. I’d almost feel bad for him if he weren’t a gazillionaire, seems like a nice chap though.

Apparently a lot of the script is based on an inside joke he made with Patty Jenkins during Wonder Woman 1984. From the trailer this never struck me as a film that was gonna be all that great but I'm glad he still has a positive attitude on it despite the bad reviews.

The fact that this film was a complete flaming POS, was bad enough. What's truly maddening is that it actually got made in the first place. There are literally thousands of film scripts with more substance, better jokes, more "clever" references about Los Angeles, a more cohesive story, that will never ever get produced. Those scripts won't even have the luxury of getting bought, but then stuck in development hell. So Chris Pine decided one day he wanted to be Robert Towne Jr., and write / direct this hackfest of a Hindenburg disaster that would under normal circumstances be credited to Alan Smithee. But because Chris Pine is Chris Pine, he was able to get this appalling dreck financed, produced, distributed, etc. And on top of it all, months later, Chris Pine is still flabbergasted that his POS movie was savaged by critics and audiences alike, which is even MORE maddening that he believed he somehow hit a home run, instead of his own head with the bat.

I have a thing for LA centric movies and the trailer looks like the funnier sister to David Robert Mitchell's Under the Silverlake, which I love , also was not loved by critics and did horribly at the box office. Looking forward to you reviewing Longlegs.

This movie reminded me of Fool's Paradise, and unfortunately that's not a compliment. Both films are passion projects from actors, both movies think they are far more clever than they actually are, both films waste talented casts. Bummer.
