And its still leagues better than any of the rehashed s**t we see from Hollywood there days

So why does Alonso think this movie needed to be as good as Fury Road, or to meet those expectations to justify existing? Fury Road is regarded as one of the greatest action movies of all-time. My brother does this, it's a defense mechanism against getting disappointed, and against feelings for something you like changing, so you proactively decide nothing can top the thing you like. Therefore you don't have to think critically about the new thing, except to find "reasons" to dismiss it, and you aren't disappointed (in fact you can feel superior to everyone) and you don't have to risk re-evaluating something you love and now have identity invested in. It's so effective, and so sad.

Sorry that George Miller doesn't have the same artistic talent of the committee that made the cinematic masterpiece Ant-Man Quantumania Alonzo. Not every movie director can be Peyton Reed when he's firing on all cylinders, directing 2% of a movie where the other 98% was done in previz by a formula to give us the most generic and lifeless movie we've ever seen. We need more critics defending corporate MCU and further encouraging the death of movies made by real people!

This was a revenge flick, pure and simple. I realized that early on. Miller's not trying to do what he did in Fury Road, story wise. it's a revenge flick. A fantastic one, at that. It leaned into the action and revenge while giving lots of character work too. I think I got a bit confused with what exactly Dementus was doing with his double crosses and hostile take overs. "Wait, who is doing what to whom?" But I didn't worry about it and TOTALLY enjoyed the ride here. And you're right the transition from young Furiosa to older Furiosa was seamless. I actually found myself thinking "Wait, is that Anya now? Ah, YES!!" So well done, I'm not sure if I missed the actual point of transition. The action sequences were very well designed, and although they were very propulsive, the movie also took its time so the action sequences felt like a stories unto themselves. Brilliant stuff. Anyways, I really had a blast with this movie! (Bad Alonso!! Bad! Hahaha)

Fury Road was the first Mad Max I saw. It was of course a great movie that I've since come to consider a masterpiece, but at the time thought, "Well clearly there's more to this story." I eventually did watch the first 3 movies but was somewhat surprised that there was basically no direct backstory. I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing that "needed" to be filled, but I do think that there was a clear gap and escalation between Thunderdome and Fury Road that I think Furiosa is justified in helping to fill. I agree with Alonso that it is impossible to live up to Fury Road. I think that the idiosyncratic storytelling and creative choices was closer to something like Road Warrior, which to me helps me not compare it to Fury Road. I see Furiosa as trying to support Fury Road rather than compete with it, which it knows it cannot do, and I think it succeeds at making Fury Road even better and also succeeds at putting some glue in the overarching story of the Wasteland. I would definitely recommend telling someone watching these movies for the first time to watch Furiosa before the big orgasm of Fury Road, which is why I also very much disagree that the credits decision. Saying to someone "Watch 1-3, then Furiosa but not the end credits, then Fury Road" is a very awkward way to recommend a movie series.

I enjoy this film for different reasons than Fury Road. I like the fact that we have a slower-paced character piece that is of an epic scale, looks great and features a lot of spectacular action setpieces. Back in the day, one of the criticisms expressed with regard to Fury Road was the fact that the film was essentially just one big chase scene there and back again and to an extent that's true. It's still excellent at being that but it does not get to devote a lot of time to the characters. Furiosa does devote a lot of time to the main character and on top of that the film makes the conscious choice to have her speak as little as possible...and yet I always knew what she was thinking and feeling because Anya Taylor-Joy is that good an actress. One of the most thrilling action dystopias I have had the joy of watching tbh.

As much as I didn't like Beyond Thunderdome I appreciated that it wasn't just a remake of The Road Warrior. Some filmmakers want to replicate their success so much they just remake the first one for example The Hangover 2 is basically the first Hangover.

Alonzo feels about Furiosa like I (not that I'm anyone) felt about the Matrix Reloaded. The Matrix Reloaded is an excellent action movie, but didn't have the mystery or the impact of the original. I didn't think fondly of it for a long time because it simply didn't blow my mind like the original. But looking back, I think I was disappointed only because I was expecting something that literally only has happened a handful of times in the 100+ years of cinema - a sequel (or prequel) that is more innovative and groundbreaking than the landmark original. I hope in time Alonzo can appreciate the movie for what it is (an excellent genre pic and relative to follow-up movies, very well done) than what it failed and likely could never be. I can see the rationale for his score if it is reflective of the lack of vision by the studio or Miller's motivation to make a new movie in the series. He would be using his review to make a point. But, as someone who just saw this movie yesterday, I would give it an A or A-, as opposed to Fury Road's A+. Furiosa is excellent and it's a shame we won't get to see a third movie or Anya Taylor Joy in this role again.

I can. Fury Road was pretty much perfect and should have been a one and done. Imagine there being a Gravity 2 or a sequel to 1917, Dunkirk or The Revenant. It just wouldn't work. Just saw it and thought it was great. Couple things bugged me, including the snippets in the end credits - not necessary, and awkward I thought. There is a realization about Furiosa somewhere in the middle that she seriously tries to hide. If you've seen it, then you'll know which one I mean. When it's revealed, it should be a thing. Instead, only one character reacts, and it's totally passed over otherwise. I feel like Miller should have cut somewhere else and shown at least Immortan Joe's reaction - something. But these are small nits. overall, I loved it. Following Charlize Theron is not for the feint of heart. Anya Taylor Joy did it with expertise. Well done. Chris Hemsworth's Dementos - a wonderfully erratic, heartbroken, soulless, incompetent and yet formidable wanna-be. How many incompetent characters have we seen that are presented as buffoons? Not this one. He may not know what he's doing, but he has great cunning and brings about devastating destruction. I thought Dementos was well crafted. He reminded me a little of Wolf Larson in the Sea Wolf by Jack London.

Not saying its above criticism but if Fury Road never existed people would probably react the same way to this. The first Villeneuve Dune movie hit it out of the park with the world building, visual styling and pacing and wowed me. The second one... I was left wanting for something more, it covered too much of the same territory, being with the desert folks was cool, but was a bit repetitive without giving more engaging depth to their culture or struggle. Saw it Thurs. & then watched Fury Road again last night & I look way more fwd to being able to watch these back to back than I do Denis’ Dune & hope we get the Max Wastelands film for an epic marathon. Valid points for discussion & criticism aside it’s beyond me what universe in which this deserves a score of essentially ‘slightly better than average’ @ a 6 ?!? The craft alone puts it leaps and bounds beyond most of what gets shovelled out into theatres. If this is what qualifies as a 6, I’d say theatre owners & studios should just give up now, shut down the industry and find something better to do w/ their lives. Hopefully there’s a significant contingent that isn’t dissuaded by such a score & vehemently disagrees. Everyone is entitled to their opinion & entitled to be wrong. In my estimation Christy is infinitely more correct in this instance. As an aside, only having seen it late in its run, I also found Alonso’s review of Civil War baffling as it lacked any explanation sufficient enough for me to grasp the POV and so devoid of value. Having seen Marianna’s take over on Impression Blend I’m left to assume it’s along the lines of what was intended. To me it seemed crystal clear where it needed to be and avoided spelling things out where it would alienate those who most needed to receive the message. 🤷♂️

Furiosa was shot within the cinemascope 2.35:1 aspect ratio. Not worthy with extra imax tickets

Too many reviews make the mistake of comparing it to fury road. It's not fury road, it's not trying to be fury road, it's a prequel movie. It's meant to be about the characters, not meant to be more dazzling than fury road. Even though it is a prequel it is meant to be watched and enjoyed as it's own movie, it's own animal. Also adding more new bs just to have "new stuff" doesn't make it a better movie. It's meant to go more in detail about Gaston and the bullet farm because we don't know the details on these places unless we watch furiosa. Basically if you go into the movie with the predisposition "let's see how this compares to fury road" easily you will be disappointed because its a completely different movie and completely different style of movie. He literally says it's an odyssey. Fury road takes places over like 2 or 3 days. Those are supposed to be a very eventful 2 or 3 days. Furiosas events are going to take place with longer spans of time in between

Looks like a pretty good popcorn movie. Guess I'll have to get around to watching Fury Road at some point. Action movies generally bore me pretty quickly, though.

I disagree. Furiosa is a better movie than Fury Road in every possible way.

Does it look like a “made for tv” type of movies with the CG?

Not at all, it looks much better than that.

I'm a little bit tired of film critics frowning on CGI. "This time they took the easy way!" Yeah. Because as we all know, CG does not require people with hard-earned skills at all, it's the computer that does everything. There are no impossible deadlines, no burnout epidemic, and nobody ever leaves the CG artists out of the credits, because CG? Meh! CG artists are highly skilled professionals, who work day-and-night to fulfil the audience's extreme expectations, and all they get is "oh, the easy way". Show some respect, reviewers. This craft is as honest as yours.

The thing is there’s tons of CGI in Fury Road but people never focused on how great the compositing was or how it was used they ignored it to focus on just the practical

Alonso’s review was truly utterly worthless. He set his own expectations to an unreasonable standard. That’s purely on him, not the movie.

"Temper your expectations" is hardly worthless advice.

@@TroyTheObtuse”Don’t expect this movie to be one of the greatest films of all times” is pretty useless. Why would anyone reasonable expect that?
@TroyTheObtuse7 ай бұрын
@@SupremacySinemaI'd agree with you, if that were all Alonso had to say. But he said what he liked, described his specific disappointments, and gave it a mildly positive endorsement and recommendation to see it large and loud. But that wasn't effusive enough for some.
